Abstract

Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) offers a novel approach to encoding and understanding the complexity of natural languages through the power of quantum computation. This paper presents a pretrained quantum context-sensitive embedding model, called QCSE, that captures context-sensitive word embeddings, leveraging the unique properties of quantum systems to learn contextual relationships in languages. The model introduces quantum-native context learning, enabling the utilization of quantum computers for linguistic tasks. Central to the proposed approach are innovative context matrix computation methods, designed to create unique, representations of words based on their surrounding linguistic context. Five distinct methods are proposed and tested for computing the context matrices, incorporating techniques such as exponential decay, sinusoidal modulation, phase shifts, and hash-based transformations. These methods ensure that the quantum embeddings retain context sensitivity, thereby making them suitable for downstream language tasks where the expressibility and properties of quantum systems are valuable resources. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model and the associated context matrix methods, evaluations are conducted on both a Fulani corpus, a low-resource African language, dataset of small size and an English corpus of slightly larger size. The results demonstrate that QCSE not only captures context sensitivity but also leverages the expressibility of quantum systems for representing rich, context-aware language information. The use of Fulani further highlights the potential of QNLP to mitigate the problem of lack of data for this category of languages. This work underscores the power of quantum computation in natural language processing (NLP) and opens new avenues for applying QNLP to real-world linguistic challenges across various tasks and domains.

Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) is an emerging interdisciplinary field at the intersection of quantum computing, natural language understanding, and formal linguistic theory. As advances in quantum hardware and algorithms accelerate, QNLP promises new paradigms for representation learning, semantic modeling, and efficient computation. However, existing literature remains fragmented, with no unified synthesis across modeling, encoding, and evaluation dimensions. In this work, we present the first systematic and taxonomy driven survey of QNLP that holistically organizes research spanning three core dimensions: computational models, encoding paradigms, and evaluation frameworks. First, we analyze foundational approaches that map linguistic structures into quantum formalism, including categorical compositional models, variational quantum circuits, and hybrid quantum classical architectures. Second, we introduce a unified taxonomy of encoding strategies, ranging from quantum tokenization and state preparation to embedding based encodings, highlighting tradeoffs in scalability, noise resilience, and expressiveness. Third, we provide the first comparative synthesis of evaluation methodologies, benchmark datasets, and performance metrics, while identifying reproducibility and standardization gaps.We further contrast quantum inspired NLP methods with fully quantum implemented systems, offering insights into resource efficiency, hardware feasibility, and real world applicability. Finally, we outline open challenges such as integration with LLMs and unified benchmark design, and propose a research agenda for advancing QNLP as a scalable and reliable discipline.

Abstract: Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) represents a pioneering approach to understanding and analyzing natural language by leveraging the principles of quantum computing. This project aims to explore the semantic analysis of autogenerated sentences using QNLP techniques. Traditional Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods have achieved significant milestones in language understanding and generation; however, they often struggle with the intricacies of context, ambiguity, and the vast computational resources required for complex tasks. QNLP offers a novel paradigm by utilizing the superposition and entanglement properties of quantum states, potentially revolutionizing how semantic meaning is extracted and processed. The primary objective of this project is to develop a QNLP framework capable of performing semantic analysis on autogenerated sentences. We will investigate the application of quantum algorithms and quantum machine learning models to decode the semantic structure and context of sentences generated by language models. This involves encoding textual data into quantum states, applying quantum gates and circuits to manipulate these states, and measuring the outcomes to interpret semantic information. By integrating quantum computing with NLP, this project seeks to achieve higher accuracy and efficiency in understanding complex language patterns. The anticipated outcomes include a comprehensive evaluation of QNLP's performance in semantic analysis, a comparison with classical NLP methods, and potential advancements in language processing tasks such as sentiment analysis, language translation, and text summarization. This project will contribute to the growing body of research at the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence, paving the way for innovative solutions in the field of natural language processing.

By using the quantum mechanics phenomenon, quantum computers provide a new dimension of computational power that drastically accelerates solving complex and resource-intensive problems. One of the most evolving but, due to the computation power of standard computers, reasonably limited application domain is natural language processing (NLP). NLP seeks to give interactive systems the ability to understand and manipulate human language. Making systems understand and manipulate human languages requires large amounts of data and computational power during learning as well as during the execution of NLP. For handling these amounts of data like text and audio recordings and the complexity of classical NLP algorithms, quantum computation has emerged as a promising solution. This work gives an extensive overview of this new field, known as quantum natural language processing (QNLP). Introducing the basics of quantum computing, we discuss its use in NLP by explaining the different proposed embedding models, quantum algorithms, and other methods of QNLP. As QNLP is still in its infancy, this comprehensive overview is the foundation that points to the upcoming research direction.

Quantum-Inspired Transformers for Scalable Natural Language Processing Applications in Future AI

Priya Vij, Parmanand Yadav

Quantum-Inspired Transformers are a new class of approaches for natural language processing (NLP) that use principles inspired by physical quantum mechanics to encode and process linguistic information. Paper aims to improve both scalability and efficiency for large-scale NLP tasks in the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI). However, traditional transformers can struggle to encode complex semantic relationships across long sequences and can require high levels of compute resources, hence limiting scalability for large datasets and multilingual tasks. In addition, traditional embeddings do not represent multiple contextual meanings simultaneously, which decreases model expressiveness. To address these challenges and maximize the exploration of potential quantum effects in AI, this paper presents a Quantum State Embedding Attention (QSEA) framework that encodes tokens as quantum inspired states with complex-valued amplitudes. Attention, which is based on entangled states, is meant to efficiently capture long-range dependencies while reducing compute and increasing scalability, all without losing a rich understanding of context. Whereas multilingual translation needs to encode both the source similarity and the target language within a smaller semantic representation space. Our experimentation shows that QSEA consistently provides increased accuracy in decoding, measures attention across long sequences, and yields enduring scalability over large multilingual datasets. The evidence demonstrates the potential for QSEA to be the new layer in the future of AI systems, a layer that is scalable and a highperforming NLP application.
