Abstract

Kitaev magnets have emerged as pivotal systems for investigating frustrated magnetism, providing a unique platform to explore quantum phases governed by the interplay between bond-dependent anisotropy and external magnetic fields. However, the quantum phase diagrams, particularly near the dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev regime, remain puzzling despite extensive studies. In this work, we perform unbiased exact diagonalization calculations of the Kitaev-$Γ$ model in a [111] magnetic field on a $C_{6}$-symmetric 24-site cluster. By calculating the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ flux density and the topological entanglement entropy, we reveal multiple phase transitions and identify signatures of both scalar and vector chiral orders in the intermediate-field regime between the Kitaev spin liquid and the polarized phase. As the negative $Γ$ interaction increases, we discover a proximate quantum spin liquid featured by a three-peak specific heat and a spin-flop phase at a moderate magnetic field. Our findings provide insight into the field-induced intermediate phases in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model and pave the way for the hunt for emergent phases in real materials.

Emergent magnetic order in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in a [111] field

Will Holdhusen, Daniel Huerga, Gerardo Ortíz

The Kitaev spin liquid, stabilized as the ground state of the Kitaev honeycomb model, is a paradigmatic example of a topological ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid. The fate of the Kitaev spin liquid in presence of an external magnetic field is at present, a subject of intense scrutiny due to recent experimental signatures pointing to a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological phase in certain materials, as well as theoretical studies predicting the emergence of a quantum spin liquid phase of debated nature. In this work, we employ hierarchical mean-field theory, a method based on the use of clusters preserving relevant symmetries and short-range quantum correlations, to investigate the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev's model in a [111] magnetic field. By using clusters of 24 sites, we predict that the Kitaev spin liquid transits through two intermediate phases, characterized by emerging stripe and chiral orders, respectively, before entering the trivial partially polarized phase, differing from previous studies. We assess our results by performing exact diagonalization and computing the scaling of different observables, including the many-body Chern number and other topological quantities, thus establishing hierarchical mean-field theory as a method to study models of frustrated quantum magnetism potentially hosting topological quantum spin liquids.

Generic field-driven phenomena in Kitaev spin liquids: Canted magnetism and proximate spin liquid physics

Ciarán Hickey, Matthias Gohlke, Christoph Berke +1 more

Topological spin liquids in two spatial dimensions are stable phases in the presence of a small magnetic field, but may give way to field-induced phenomena at intermediate field strengths. Sandwiched between the low-field spin liquid physics and the high-field spin-polarized phase, the exploration of magnetic phenomena in this intermediate regime, however, often remains elusive to controlled analytical approaches. Here we numerically study such intermediate-field magnetic phenomena for two representative Kitaev models (on the square-octagon and decorated honeycomb lattice) that exhibit either Abelian or non-Abelian topological order in the low-field limit. Using a combination of exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group techniques, as well as linear spin-wave theory, we establish the generic features of Kitaev spin liquids in an external magnetic field. While ferromagnetic models typically exhibit a direct transition to the polarized state at a relatively low field strength, antiferromagnetic couplings not only substantially stabilizes the topological spin liquid phase, but generically lead to the emergence of a distinct field-induced intermediate regime, separated by a crossover from the high-field polarized regime. Our results suggest that, for most lattice geometries, this regime generically exhibits significant spin canting, antiferromagnetic spin-spin correlations, and an extended proximate spin liquid regime at finite temperatures. Notably, we identify a symmetry obstruction in the original honeycomb Kitaev model that prevents, at least for certain field directions, the formation of such canted magnetism without breaking symmetries---consistent with the recent numerical observation of an extended gapless spin liquid in this case.

Robust non-Abelian spin liquid and a possible intermediate phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model with magnetic field

Zheng Zhu, Itamar Kimchi, D. N. Sheng +1 more

We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin-liquid phase in the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for a robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy ${H}_{*}^{\text{FM}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.02$, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magnetic field that is an order of magnitude larger, ${H}_{*}^{\text{AFM}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.2$. Interestingly, for larger fields ${H}_{*}^{\text{AFM}}<H<{H}_{**}^{\text{AFM}}$, an intermediate gapless phase is observed, before a second transition to the high-field partially polarized paramagnet. We attribute this rich phase diagram, and the remarkable stability of the chiral topological phase in the AFM Kitaev model, to the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and frustration enhanced by the magnetic field. Our findings suggest relevance to recent experiments on ${\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ under magnetic fields.

Kitaev-derived spin liquid in the frustrated quantum magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Han Li, Xu-Guang Zhou, Gang Su +1 more

Abstract The pursuit of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) predicted by the Kitaev honeycomb model remains a central yet challenging goal in quantum magnetism. Realistic candidate materials inevitably host non-Kitaev interactions that often lead to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperature. While magnetic fields can suppress such AFM order and may stabilize a QSL phase, conclusive evidence for a field-induced Kitaev QSL has remained elusive despite a decade of research. Here, we establish an effective K - J -Γ- $${\Gamma }^{{\prime} }$$ Γ ′ model with a dominant AFM Kitaev interaction for Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , which quantitatively explains its key experimental measurements. Using high-precision tensor-network calculations, we reveal a QSL phase under intermediate [111] magnetic fields, which is possibly gapless, and find it can be adiabatically connected to the intensively studied intermediate-field QSL in the pure AFM Kitaev model. This correspondence confirms that the Kitaev model as the origin of the intermediate-field QSL in cobalt-based magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , thus offering a concrete platform for exploring Kitaev-derived QSL in realistic materials.

Robust non-Abelian phase in antiferromagnetic Kitaev model under magnetic field

Zheng Zhu, Itamar Kimchi, D. N. Sheng +1 more

We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin liquid phase in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization (ED) we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy $H_*^\text{FM} \approx 0.02$, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magnetic field that is an order of magnitude larger, $H_*^\text{AFM} \approx 0.2$. Interestingly, for larger fields $H_*^\text{AFM} < H < H_{**}^\text{AFM}$, an intermediate gapless phase is observed, before a second transition to the high-field partially-polarized paramagnet. We attribute this rich phase diagram, and the remarkable stability of the chiral topological phase in the AFM Kitaev model, to the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and frustration enhanced by the magnetic field. We discuss possible relevance of this result to RuCl$_3$ under various magnetic fields.

Kitaev honeycomb antiferromagnet in a field: quantum phase diagram for general spin

Saeed S. Jahromi, Max Hörmann, Patrick Adelhardt +4 more

We use tensor-network methods and high-order linked-cluster expansions to explore the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field for general spin S values. Tensor network calculations for the pure Kitaev model confirm the absence of fluxes and spin-spin correlations beyond nearest neighbors, while revealing discrete orientational symmetry breaking for S ∈ 1, 3/2, 2, consistent with the semiclassical limit. An intermediate region between Kitaev phases and the high-field polarized phase is identified for all considered spin values, showing a sequence of potential phases characterized by distinct local magnetization patterns while the total magnetization increases smoothly as a function of the field. Linked-cluster expansions for the high-field zero-momentum gap and spectral weight indicate a quantum critical breakdown of the polarized phase, suggesting exotic physics at intermediate Kitaev couplings. The antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Kitaev model is known to have an intermediate phase under a magnetic field before transitioning to a fully polarized state. However, the nature of this phase for higher spins remained unclear. This paper explores the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field using tensor-network methods and high-order linked cluster expansions, uncovering an intermediate phase with distinct local magnetization patterns across different spin values.
