Abstract

Abstract In ordered quantum magnets where interactions between elementary excitations dominate over their kinetic energy, perturbative approaches often fail, making non-perturbative methods essential to capture spectral features such as bound states and the redistribution of weight within excitation continua. Although an increasing number of experiments report anomalous spin excitation continua in such systems, their microscopic interpretation remains an open challenge. Here, we investigate the spin dynamics of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet in its 1/3-plateau phase using two complementary non-perturbative approaches: exact diagonalization in a truncated Hilbert space for a gas of elementary excitations (THED) and matrix product state (MPS) simulations. Alongside cross-validation between these methods, we benchmark our results against inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data. The THED analysis confirms the presence of two-magnon bound states and identifies the anomalous scattering continuum observed in both MPS and INS as a two-magnon resonance, arising from hybridization between the bound state and the two-magnon continuum. Furthermore, THED reveals bound states overlapping with the continuum, enriching the interpretation of continuum anomalies. More broadly, THED provides a robust framework for investigating anomalous spin excitation continua and bound-state effects in other materials with gapped spectra. Its combination of accuracy and computational efficiency makes it a powerful tool for extracting reliable microscopic models in semiclassical regimes.

Spin Excitation Spectra of Anisotropic Spin- 1/2 Triangular Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Runze Chi, Yang Liu, Yuan Wan +2 more

Investigation of dynamical excitations is difficult but crucial to the understanding of many exotic quantum phenomena discovered in quantum materials. This is particularly true for highly frustrated quantum antiferromagnets whose dynamical properties deviate strongly from theoretical predictions made based on the spin-wave or other approximations. Here, we present a large-scale numerical calculation on the dynamical correlation functions of spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model using a state-of-the-art tensor network renormalization group method. The calculated results allow us to gain for the first time a comprehensive picture on the nature of spin excitation spectra in this highly frustrated quantum system. It provides a quantitative account for all the key features of the dynamical spectra disclosed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements for Ba_{3}CoSb_{2}O_{9}, revealing the importance of the interplay between low- and high-energy excitations and its renormalization effect to the low-energy magnon bands and high-energy continuums. We identify the longitudinal Higgs modes in the intermediate-energy scale and predict the energy and momentum dependence of spectral functions along the three principal axes that can be verified by polarized neutron scattering experiments. Furthermore, we find that the spin excitation spectra weakly depend on the anisotropic ratio of the antiferromagnetic interaction.

Field-Induced Spin Excitations in the Spin-1/2 Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsYbSe$_2$

Tao Xie, Jie Xing, Stanislav E. Nikitin +7 more

A layered triangular lattice with spin-1/2 ions is an ideal platform to explore highly entangled exotic states like quantum spin liquid (QSL). Here, we report a systematic in-field neutron scattering study on a perfect two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, CsYbSe$_2$, a member of the large QSL candidate family rare-earth chalcogenides. The elastic neutron scattering measured down to 70 mK shows that there is a short-range 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic order at zero field. In the field-induced ordered states, the spin-spin correlation lengths along the $c$ axis are relatively short, although the heat capacity results indicate long-range magnetic orders at 3 T $-$ 5 T. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra evolve from highly damped continuum-like excitations at zero field to relatively sharp spin wave modes at the plateau phase. Our extensive large-cluster density-matrix renormalization group calculations with a Heisenberg triangular-lattice nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic model reproduce the essential features of the experimental spectra, including continuum-like excitations at zero field, series of sharp magnons at the plateau phase as well as two-magnon excitations at high energy. This work presents comprehensive experimental and theoretical overview of the unconventional field-induced spin dynamics in triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet and thus provides valuable insight into quantum many-body phenomena.

Field-induced quasi-bound state within the two-magnon continuum of a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Frank Elson, M. Nayak, Alexander A. Eberharter +14 more

Quantum magnets in two dimensions display strong quantum interaction effects even when magnetically ordered. Using the metal-organic framework material CuF$_2$(D$_2$O)$_2$(pyz), we investigate the field-dependent spin dynamics of the $S = 1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering to applied fields beyond one third of saturation. We discover an anomalously sharp, dispersive ``shadow mode'' residing within the two-magnon continuum, which shadows the dispersion of the transverse one-magnon branches across the Brillouin zone at an offset equal to the Larmor energy. We perform cylinder matrix-product-state (MPS) calculations that reproduce the field-induced spectrum quantitatively and apply a spectrally consistent $1/S$ spin-wave theory to deduce that the ``Larmor-shadow mode'' is a composite two-magnon resonance: a dispersing magnon at wavevector ${\bf Q}$ couples to the uniform Larmor precession at $Γ$, its small intrinsic linewidth indicating a non-perturbative effect of attractive magnon-magnon interactions. Another quantum-fluctuation phenomenon, the zero-field $(π,0)$ anomaly, is lost at increasing fields, which tighten the spectral weight into the one-magnon and Larmor-shadow modes. To our knowledge, these results constitute the first observation of a sharp quasi-bound state embedded in the continuum of a gapless two-dimensional antiferromagnet.
