Abstract

We study the dynamic behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipolar interactions when the influence of external electric fields affects the coherent tunneling properties. Here, we propose a tunable platform based on BECs where Josephson oscillations can be engineered and modulated through external electric fields. We develop a theoretical and numerical framework that reveals how electric fields affect intercondensate tunneling, phase dynamics, and collective excitations. By employing a coupled set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with adiabatic elimination of excited states, we demonstrate field-induced tuning of Josephson frequencies and a transition from contact to dipole-dominated regimes. These findings corroborate theoretical predictions about the sensitivity of dipolar BECs to external fields and deepen our understanding of quantum coherence and tunneling in long-range interacting quantum systems.

Stabilization of trapless dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal modulation of the contact interaction

Subramaniyan Sabari, Bishwajyoti Dey

We study theoretically the stability of a trapless dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with temporal modulation of the short-range contact interaction. For this aim, through both analytical and numerical methods, we solve a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with both constant and oscillatory forms of the short-range contact interaction along with long-range, nonlocal, dipole-dipole interaction terms. By using the variational method, we discuss the stability of the trapless dipolar BEC with the presence and absence of both constant and oscillatory contact interactions. We show that the oscillatory contact interaction prevents the collapse of the trapless dipolar BEC. We confirm the analytical prediction through numerical simulations. We also study the collective excitations in the system induced by the effective potential due to the oscillating interaction.

A dipolar self-induced bosonic Josephson junction

M. Abad, M. Guilleumas, R. Mayol +2 more

We propose a new scheme for observing Josephson oscillations and macroscopic quantum self-trapping in a toroidally confined Bose-Einstein condensate: a dipolar self-induced Josephson junction. Polarizing the atoms perpendicularly to the trap symmetry axis, an effective ring-shaped, double-well potential is achieved which is induced by the dipolar interaction. By numerically solving the three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that coherent tunneling phenomena such as Josephson oscillations and quantum self-trapping can take place. The dynamics in the self-induced junction can be qualitatively described by a two-mode model taking into account both s -wave and dipolar interactions.

Internal Josephson effects in spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Masashi Yasunaga, Makoto Tsubota

We theoretically study the internal Josephson effect, which is driven by spin-exchange interactions and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, in a three-level system for spin-1 Bose--Einstein condensates, obtaining novel spin dynamics. We introduce single spatial mode approximations into the Gross--Pitaevskii equations and derive the Josephson-type equations, which are analogous to tunneling currents through three junctions between three superconductors. From an analogy with two interacting nonrigid pendulums, we identify unique varied oscillational modes, called the $0--\ensuremath{\pi}$, $0--\mathit{running}$, $\mathit{running}--\mathit{running}$, $2n\ensuremath{\pi} & \mathit{running}--2\ensuremath{\pi}$, $\mathit{single nonrigid pendulum}$, and $\mathit{two rigid pendulums}$ phase modes. These Josephson modes in the three states are expected to be found in real atomic Bose gas systems.

Collective excitations and tunneling dynamics in long bosonic Josephson junctions

M. R. Momme, Y. M. Bidasyuk, Michael Weyrauch

We investigate the low-energy dynamics of two coupled anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates forming a long Josephson junction. The theoretical study is performed in the framework of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Bogoliubov--de Gennes formalism. We analyze the excitation spectrum of the coupled Bose condensates and show how low-energy excitations of the condensates lead to multiple-frequency oscillations of the atomic populations in the two wells. This analysis generalizes the standard bosonic Josephson equation approach. We also develop a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the coupled condensates, that is capable of reproducing the excitation spectrum and population dynamics of the system.

Dynamical stability of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with temporal modulation of the s -wave scattering length

Subramaniyan Sabari, Chandroth P. Jisha, Kuppuswamy Porsezian +1 more

We study the stabilization properties of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate by temporal modulation of short-range two-body interaction. Through both analytical and numerical methods, we analyze the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation with short-range two-body and long-range, nonlocal, dipolar interaction terms. We derive the equation of motion and effective potential of the dipolar condensate by variational method. We show that there is an enhancement of the condensate stability due to the inclusion of dipolar interaction in addition to the two-body contact interaction. We also show that the stability of the dipolar condensate increases in the presence of time varying two-body contact interaction; the temporal modification of the contact interaction prevents the collapse of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. Finally we confirm the semi-analytical prediction through the direct numerical simulations of the governing equation.
