Abstract

Conformal field theory (CFT) can be placed on disparate space-time manifolds to facilitate investigations of their properties. For ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional [ ( 2 + 1 ) D ] theories, one useful choice is the real projective space RP 3 obtained by identifying antipodal points on the boundary sphere of a three-dimensional ball. One-point functions of scalar primary fields on this manifold generally do not vanish and encode the so-called crosscap coefficients. These coefficients also manifest on the sphere as the overlaps between certain crosscap states and CFT primary states. Taking the ( 2 + 1 ) D Ising CFT as a concrete example, we demonstrate that crosscap coefficients can be extracted from microscopic models. We construct crosscap states in both lattice models defined on polyhedrons and continuum models in Landau levels, where the degrees of freedom at antipodal points are entangled in Bell-type states. By computing their overlaps with the eigenstates of many-body Hamiltonians, we obtain results consistent with those from conformal bootstrap. Importantly, our approach directly reveals the absolute values of crosscap overlaps, whereas bootstrap calculations typically yield only their ratios. Furthermore, we investigate the finite-size scaling of these overlaps and their evolution under perturbations away from criticality.

Crosscap states and duality of Ising field theory in two dimensions

Yueshui Zhang, Ying-Hai Wu, Lei Wang +1 more

We propose two distinct crosscap states for the two-dimensional (2D) Ising field theory. These two crosscap states, identifying Ising spins or dual spins (domain walls) at antipodal points, are shown to be related via the Kramers-Wannier duality transformation. We derive their Majorana free field representations and extend bosonization techniques to calculate correlation functions of the 2D Ising conformal field theory (CFT) with different crosscap boundaries. Away from criticality, we develop a conformal perturbation theory to calculate the Klein bottle entropy (norm-square of the crosscap overlap) as a universal scaling function []. For the Ising field theory, our analytical results support the conjectured monotonicity of the Klein bottle entropy under relevant perturbations. The formalism provides a general framework for studying perturbed 2D CFTs on nonorientable manifolds.

Conformal data for the $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher CFT in $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetime from exact diagonalization and matrix product states on the fuzzy sphere

Arjun Dey, Loïc Herviou, Christopher Mudry +2 more

We study at zero temperature a microscopic quantum spin-1 model on the fuzzy sphere that realizes the O(2) O ( 2 ) Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory (CFT) in (2+1) ( 2 + 1 ) -dimensional spacetime at a quantum critical point. Here, we use the fuzzy-sphere regularization as it preserves the full spatial SO(3) S O ( 3 ) rotational symmetry of the CFT, enabling the state-operator correspondence that maps energy eigenstates directly to CFT operators. Using exact diagonalization (ED) and matrix product state (MPS) techniques combined with conformal perturbation theory (CPT), we extract conformal data including scaling dimensions and operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients. We identify 48 primary operators and their descendants, organized by the conserved O(2) O ( 2 ) charge S^{z} S z and spatial angular momentum L L . Our numerical results for the scaling dimensions of the lowest primary operators show good agreement with conformal bootstrap predictions. We verify predictions from the large charge expansion, which provides systematic predictions for operators carrying large U(1) U ( 1 ) charge, connecting the Goldstone mode physics in the ordered phase to phonon primaries at the critical point.

The linear property of genus-g, n-point, b-boundary, c-crosscap correlation functions in two-dimensional conformal field theory

Xun Liu

A bstract We propose a method to challenge the calculation of genus- g , bulk n -point, b -boundary, c -crosscap correlation functions with x boundary operators $$ {\mathcal{F}}_{g,n,b,c}^x $$ F g , n , b , c x in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFT 2 ). We show that $$ {\mathcal{F}}_{g,n,b,c}^x $$ F g , n , b , c x are infinite linear combinations of genus- g , bulk ( n + b + c )-point functions F g , ( n + b + c ) , and try to obtain the linear coefficients in this work. We show the existence of a single pole structure in the linear coefficients at degenerate limits. A practical method to obtain the infinite linear coefficients is the free field realizations of Ishibashi states. We review the results in Virasoro minimal models $$ \mathcal{M} $$ M ( p, p ′) and extend it to the N = 1 minimal models $$ \mathcal{SM} $$ SM ( p, p ′).

Exact diagonalization, matrix product states and conformal perturbation theory study of a 3D Ising fuzzy sphere model

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Loïc Herviou, Patrick H. Wilhelm +1 more

Numerical studies of phase transitions in statistical and quantum lattice models provide crucial insights into the corresponding Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). In higher dimensions, comparing finite-volume numerical results to infinite-volume CFT data is facilitated by choosing the sphere S^{d-1} S d − 1 as the spatial manifold. Recently, the fuzzy sphere regulator [Zhu et al, Phys. Rev. X 13, 021009 (2023)] has enabled such studies with exact rotational invariance, yielding impressive agreement with known 3D Ising CFT predictions, as well as new results. However, systematic improvements and a deeper understanding of finite-size corrections remain essential. In this work, we revisit the fuzzy sphere regulator, focusing on the original Ising model, with two main goals. First, we assess the robustness of this approach using Conformal Perturbation Theory (CPT), to which we provide a detailed guidebook. We demonstrate how CPT provides a unified framework for determining the critical point, the speed of light, and residual deviations from CFT predictions. Applying this framework, we study finite-size corrections and clarify the role of tuning the model in minimizing these effects. Second, we develop a novel method for extracting Operator Product Expansion (OPE) coefficients from fuzzy sphere data. This method leverages the sensitivity of energy levels to detuning from criticality, providing new insights into level mixing and avoided crossings in finite systems. Our work also includes validation of CPT in a 1+1D Ising model away from the integrable limit.

Improving CFT Operators Using Machine Learning

Lior Oppenheim, Snir Gazit, Zohar Ringel

Finite-size effects limit the accuracy with which conformal data can be extracted from lattice simulations of critical systems. While action improvement suppresses some corrections to scaling, it does not address operator-dependent effects arising from imperfect lattice representations of continuum conformal fields. In this work, we propose a data-driven method for improving lattice operators themselves, constructing estimators with enhanced overlap with the corresponding primary operators of the continuum conformal field theory. We identify improved lattice representations of leading spin and energy operators in three two-dimensional critical systems: the Ising model, the q = 3 Potts model, and the dilute q = 3 Potts model. In all cases, the resulting operators exhibit reduced corrections to scaling and yield more accurate estimates of scaling dimensions compared to conventional lattice choices. The code and analysis workflows used to produce these results are made available in an accompanying GitHub repository.

Conformal Fields and Operator Product Expansion in Critical Quantum Spin Chains

Yijian Zou, Ashley Milsted, Guifré Vidal

At a quantum critical point, the low-energy physics of a quantum spin chain is described by conformal field theory (CFT). Given the Hamiltonian of a critical spin chain, we propose a variational method to build an approximate lattice representation ϕ_{α} of the corresponding primary CFT operators ϕ_{α}^{CFT}. We then show how to numerically compute the operator product expansion coefficients C_{αβγ}^{CFT} governing the fusion of two primary fields. In this way, we complete the implementation of Cardy's program, outlined in the 1980s, which aims to extract the universality class of a phase transition, as encoded in the so-called conformal data of the underlying CFT, starting from a microscopic description. Our approach, demonstrated here for the critical quantum Ising model, only requires a generic (i.e., in general, nonintegrable) critical lattice Hamiltonian as its input.
