Abstract

For a symmetric $N$-quDit system described by a density matrix $ρ$, we construct a one-parameter $s$ family $\mathcal{F}^{(s)}_ρ$ of quasi-probability distributions through generalized Fano multipole operators and Stratonovich-Weyl kernels. The corresponding phase space is the complex projective ${C}P^{D-1}=U(D)/U(D-1)\times U(1)$, related to fully symmetric irreducible representations of the unitary group $U(D)$. For the particular cases $D=2$ (qubits) and $D=3$ (qutrits), we analyze the phase-space structure of Schrödinger $U(D)$-spin cat (parity adapted coherent) states and we provide plots of the corresponding Wigner $\mathcal{F}^{(0)}_ρ$ function. We examine the connection between non-classical behavior and the negativity of the Wigner function. We also compute the generalized heat kernel relating two quasi-probability distributions $\mathcal{F}^{(s)}_ρ$ and $\mathcal{F}^{(s')}_ρ$, with $t=(s'-s)/2$ playing the role of ``time'', together with their twisted Moyal product in terms of a trikernel. In the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$, we recover the usual Gaussian smoothing for $s'>s$. A diagramatic interpretation of the phase-space construction in terms of Young tableaux is also provided.

On Families of Wigner Functions for N-Level Quantum Systems

Vahagn Abgaryan, A. Khvedelidze

A method for constructing all admissible unitary non-equivalent Wigner quasiprobability distributions providing the Stratonovic-h-Weyl correspondence for an arbitrary N-level quantum system is proposed. The method is based on the reformulation of the Stratonovich–Weyl correspondence in the form of algebraic “master equations” for the spectrum of the Stratonovich–Weyl kernel. The later implements a map between the operators in the Hilbert space and the functions in the phase space identified by the complex flag manifold. The non-uniqueness of the solutions to the master equations leads to diversity among the Wigner quasiprobability distributions. It is shown that among all possible Stratonovich–Weyl kernels for a N=(2j+1)-level system, one can always identify the representative that realizes the so-called SU(2)-symmetric spin-j symbol correspondence. The method is exemplified by considering the Wigner functions of a single qubit and a single qutrit.

Quantum Phase Space Representations and Their Negativities

Ninnat Dangniam

A classical simulation scheme of quantum computation given a restricted set of states and measurements may be---occasionally, but only occasionally---interpreted naturally as a statistical simulation of positive quasi-probability distributions on a phase space. In this dissertation, we explore phase space representations for finite-dimensional quantum systems and their negativities beyond the usual analogues of the Wigner function. The first line of study focuses on a characterization tool for valid quasi-probability distributions of (possibly mixed) quantum states. A quantum generalization of Bochner's theorem from classical probability theory simultaneously characterizes both the set of valid Wigner functions and the subset of positive ones. We extend this theorem to discrete phase spaces based on projective representations of abelian groups, including the discrete Wigner functions of Gross (J. Math. Phys. 47, 122107 (2006)) and Gibbons et al. (Phys. Rev. A 70, 062101 (2004)). The rest of the dissertation is then dedicated to phase space representations covariant with respect to a general Lie group. This means, in particular, that operators that lie in the same orbit of the group have the same amount of negativity in their quasi-probabilities---a natural requirement if one would like to interpret negativity as non-classicality, and the group action as a classical dynamics. We show that the construction due to Brif and Mann (Phys. Rev. A 59, 971 (1999)) of group covariant phase space representations satisfying the so-called Stratonovich-Weyl correspondence is essentially unique, given the group and an input state in the relevant representation. As an application, we construct quasi-probability representations on a compact phase space of fermionic Gaussian states tailored to a classically simulatable problem of fermionic linear optics and find that, in the first non-trivial case of four fermionic modes, the quasi-probabilities of the Gaussian states exhibit a considerable amount of negativity.

Schmidt decomposition of parity adapted coherent states for symmetric multi-quDits

Julio Guerrero, Antonio Sojo, Alberto Mayorgas +1 more

Abstract In this paper we study the entanglement in symmetric N-quDit systems. In particular we use generalizations to U(D) of spin U(2) coherent states (CSs) and their projections on definite parity c ∈ Z 2 D − 1 (multicomponent Schrödinger cat) states and we analyse their reduced density matrices when tracing out M < N quDits. The eigenvalues (or Schmidt coefficients) of these reduced density matrices are completely characterized, allowing to prove a theorem for the decomposition of a N-quDit Schrödinger cat state with a given parity c into a sum over all possible parities of tensor products of Schrödinger cat states of N − M and M particles. Diverse asymptotic properties of the Schmidt eigenvalues are studied and, in particular, for the (rescaled) double thermodynamic limit ( N , M → ∞ , M / N fixed), we reproduce and generalize to quDits known results for photon loss of parity adapted CSs of the harmonic oscillator, thus providing an unified Schmidt decomposition for both multi-quDits and (multi-mode) photons. These results allow to determine the entanglement properties of these states and also their decoherence properties under quDit loss, where we demonstrate the robustness of these states.

A frame approach to generalized Wigner quasi-probability functions for finite systems

Antonio Sojo, Julio Guerrero, Alberto Mayorgas +1 more

Abstract In this paper we address the definition and explicit computation of quasi-probability functions, such as the Wigner function, for the discrete systems with SU(D) symmetry. To do so, we introduce the concept of coherent superstates and super-frames, that gives a natural interpretation to the Stratonovich-Weyl approach to phase-space quantum mechanics. The expressions that we obtain are compatible with previous results while they are more general and give an insight into how this problem might be solved for more complex cases. In addition, time evolution for quasi-probability functions is addressed using the aforementioned formalism and some examples are given.

Quasi-probability distributions in loop quantum cosmology

Jasel Berra–Montiel, Alberto Molgado

Abstract In this paper, we introduce a complete family of parametrized quasi-probability distributions in phase space and their corresponding Weyl quantization maps with the aim to generalize the recently developed Wigner–Weyl formalism within the loop quantum cosmology (LQC) program. In particular, we intend to define those quasi-distributions for states valued on the Bohr compactification of the real line in such a way that they are labeled by a parameter that accounts for the ordering ambiguity corresponding to non-commutative quantum operators. Hence, we notice that the projections of the parametrized quasi-probability distributions result in marginal probability densities which are invariant under any ordering prescription. We also note that, in opposition to the standard Schrödinger representation, for an arbitrary character the quasi-distributions determine a positive function independently of the ordering. Further, by judiciously implementing a parametric-ordered Weyl quantization map for LQC, we are able to recover in a simple manner the relevant cases of the standard, anti-standard, and Weyl symmetric orderings, respectively. We expect that our results may serve to analyze several fundamental aspects within the LQC program, in special those related to coherence, squeezed states, and the convergence of operators, as extensively analyzed in the quantum optics and in the quantum information frameworks.

Wigner distribution functions and the representation of a non-bijective canonical transformation in quantum mechanics

Rainer Dirl, Peter Kasperkovitz, M. Moshińsky

In a previous paper, with a similar title, the authors showed that for bijective (i.e. one-to-one onto) canonical transformations they can obtain their quantum mechanical representations in the form of a kernel in the phase space of Wigner distribution functions and recover the classical expectation for this kernel in the limit to 0. For non-bijective canonical transformations the situation is more complex as the phase space acquires either a Riemann surface structure or requires the introduction of the concept of an ambiguity group. By discussing the non-bijective canonical transformation taking them from an oscillator of frequency kappa -1 , where kappa is an integer, to one of unit frequency, they see how the kernel is generalised to include the indices associated with the irreducible representations of the ambiguity group, i.e. the ambiguity spins. They obtain the kernel explicitly and show that in the limit to 0 they recover the form that they expect in the Riemann surface picture of their phase space. While they illustrate their analysis through the representation in Wigner distribution phase space of a specific non-bijective canonical transformation, the procedure is clearly extendable to the representations of general canonical transformations of this type.

For a symmetric NNN-quDit system described by a density matrix ρρρ, we construct a one-parameter sss family Fρ(s)\mathcal{F}^{(s)}_ρFρ(s) of quasi-probability distributions through generalized Fano multipole operators and Stratonovich-Weyl kernels. For the particular cases D=2D=2D=2 (qubits) and D=3D=3D=3 (qutrits), we analyze the phase-space structure of Schrödinger U(D)U(D)U(D)-spin cat (parity adapted coherent) states and we provide plots of the corresponding Wigner Fρ(0)\mathcal{F}^{(0)}_ρFρ(0) function. We examine the connection between non-classical behavior and the negativity of the Wigner function. In the thermodynamic limit N→∞N\to\inftyN→∞, we recover the usual Gaussian smoothing for s′>ss'>ss′>s.
