Abstract

The one-dimensional (1D) domain wall of 2D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological orders is studied theoretically. The Ising domain wall model is shown to have an emergent SU(2)$_{1}$ conformal symmetry because of a hidden nonsymmorphic octahedral symmetry. While a weak magnetic field is an irrelevant perturbation to the bulk topological orders, it induces a domain wall transition from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid to a ferromagnetic order, which spontaneously breaks the anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry and the time-reversal symmetry on the domain wall. Moreover, the gapless domain wall state also realizes a 1D topological quantum critical point between a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{T}$-symmetry-protected topological phase and a trivial phase, thus demonstrating the holographic construction of topological transitions.

Phase diagram of a one-dimensional Ising model with an anomalous Z_2 symmetry

Jin-Xiang Hao, Wei Li, Yang Qi

Anomalous global symmetries, which can be realized on the boundary of symmetry-protected topological phases, bring\wlx{s} new phases and phase transitions to condensed matter physics. In this work, we study a one-dimensional model with an anomalous $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Besides a symmetry-breaking ferromagnetic phase, we find a gapless phase described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid theory with the central charge $c=1$. Our numerical finding is compatible of theoretical constraints on possible phases resulting from the symmetry anomaly.

Anomalous domain wall condensation in a modified Ising chain

Gertian Roose, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Jutho Haegeman +1 more

We construct a one-dimensional local spin Hamiltonian with an intrinsically nonlocal, and therefore anomalous, global ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry. The model is closely related to the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field, and contains a parameter that can be tuned to spontaneously break the nonlocal ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry. The Hamiltonian is constructed to capture the unconventional properties of the domain walls in the symmetry-broken phase. Using uniform matrix product states, we obtain the phase diagram that results from condensing the domain walls. We find that the complete phase diagram includes a gapless phase that is separated from the ordered ferromagnetic phase by a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, and from the ordered antiferromagnetic phase by a first-order phase transition.

Topological Luttinger liquids from decorated domain walls

Daniel E. Parker, Thomas Scaffidi, Romain Vasseur

We introduce a systematic construction of a gapless symmetry-protected topological phase in one dimension by ``decorating'' the domain walls of Luttinger liquids. The resulting strongly interacting phases provide a concrete example of a gapless symmetry-protected topological (gSPT) phase with robust symmetry-protected edge modes. Using boundary conformal field theory arguments, we show that while the bulks of such gSPT phases are identical to conventional Luttinger liquids, their boundary critical behavior is controlled by a different, strongly coupled renormalization group fixed point. Our results are checked against extensive density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Topological domain-wall pump with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spontaneous symmetry breaking

Yoshihito Kuno, Yasuhiro Hatsugai

A domain-wall pump by an extended cluster model of $S=1/2$ spins is proposed with local $U(1)$ gauge invariance. Its snapshot ground state is gapped and doubly degenerated due to $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariance, which is broken by an infinitesimal boundary magnetic field. The ground state associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is still symmetry-protected with additional spatial inversion that is characterized by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Berry phase. We investigate the topological domain-wall pump with/without boundaries. The topological pump associated with the inversion symmetry-breaking path induces a non-trivial Chern number of bulk and a singular behavior of edge states of the domain-wall. Generalization to the multi-spin interaction is also explicitly given.

Bulk anyons as edge symmetries: Boundary phase diagrams of topologically ordered states

Tsuf Lichtman, Ryan Thorngren, Netanel H. Lindner +2 more

We study effectively one-dimensional systems that emerge at the edge of a two-dimensional topologically ordered state, or at the boundary between two topologically ordered states. We argue that anyons of the bulk are associated with emergent symmetries of the edge, which play a crucial role in the structure of its phase diagram. Using this symmetry principle, transitions between distinct gapped phases at the boundaries of Abelian states can be understood in terms of symmetry-breaking transitions or transitions between symmetry-protected topological phases. Yet more exotic phenomena occur when the bulk hosts non-Abelian anyons. To demonstrate these principles, we explore the phase diagrams of the edges of a single and a double layer of the toric code, as well as those of domain walls in a single- and double-layer Kitaev spin liquid (KSL). In the case of the KSL, we find that the presence of a non-Abelian anyon in the bulk enforces Kramers-Wannier self-duality as a symmetry of the effective boundary theory. These examples illustrate a number of surprising phenomena, such as spontaneous duality breaking, two-sector phase transitions, and unfreezing of marginal operators at a transition between different gapless phases.

Topological ground state degeneracy of the two-channel Kondo lattice

Aleksandar Ljepoja, Yashar Komijani

There has been significant recent interest in the potential exotic properties of multichannel Kondo lattices and their connection to quantum materials, but the strongly coupled nature of these models has posed challenges to theoretical investigations. We study the emergence of topological order in a two-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice (2CKL) in a time-reversal symmetry-broken channel symmetric phase using a coupled-wire construction from one-dimensional (1D) 2CKLs. Through bosonization and symmetry analysis, we show that away from particle-hole symmetry, the 1D 2CKL model flows to an infrared fixed point with an emergent $\mathrm{SO}(3,1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry and a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge structure. Interwire couplings induce a transition to a topologically ordered metallic state characterized by fractionalized excitations and eightfold ground state degeneracy on a torus. Our findings connect impurity-based non-Fermi-liquid behavior to lattice topological order, with potential implications for quantum materials and topological quantum computation.
