Abstract

In the multichannel Kondo effect, overscreening of a magnetic impurity by conduction electrons leads to a frustrated exotic ground state. It has been proposed that multichannel topological Kondo (MCTK) model involving topological Cooper pair boxes with M M Majorana modes [SO( M M ) “spin”] and N N spinless electron channels exhibits an exotic intermediate coupling fixed point. This intermediate fixed point has been analyzed through large- N N perturbative calculations, which gives a zero-temperature conductance decaying as 1/N^2 1 / N 2 in the large- N N limit. However, the conductance at this intermediate fixed point has not been calculated for generic N N . Using representation theory, we verify the existence of this intermediate-coupling fixed point and find the strong-coupling effective Hamiltonian for the case M=4 M = 4 . Using conformal field theory techniques for SO( M M ), we generalize the notion of overscreening and conclude that the MCTK model is an overscreened Kondo model. We find the fixed-point finite-size energy spectrum and the leading irrelevant operator (LIO). We express the fixed-point conductance in terms of the modular S-matrix of SO( M M ) for general N N , confirming the previous large- N N result. We describe the finite-temperature corrections to the conductance by the LIO and find that they are qualitatively different for the cases N=1 N = 1 and N≥2 N ≥ 2 due to the different fusion outcomes with the current operator. We also compare the multichannel topological Kondo model to the topological symplectic Kondo model.

Multichannel Topological Kondo Effect

Guangjie Li, Yuval Oreg, Jukka I. Väyrynen

A Coulomb blockaded M-Majorana island coupled to normal metal leads realizes a novel type of Kondo effect where the effective impurity "spin" transforms under the orthogonal group SO(M). The impurity spin stems from the nonlocal topological ground state degeneracy of the island and thus the effect is known as the topological Kondo effect. We introduce a physically motivated N-channel generalization of the topological Kondo model. Starting from the simplest case N=2, we conjecture a stable intermediate coupling fixed point and evaluate the resulting low-temperature impurity entropy. The impurity entropy indicates that an emergent Fibonacci anyon can be realized in the N=2 model. We also map the case N=2, M=4 to the conventional four-channel Kondo model and find the conductance at the intermediate fixed point. By using the perturbative renormalization group, we also analyze the large-N limit, where the fixed point moves to weak coupling. In the isotropic limit, we find an intermediate stable fixed point, which is stable to "exchange" coupling anisotropies, but unstable to channel anisotropy. We evaluate the fixed point impurity entropy and conductance to obtain experimentally observable signatures of our results. In the large-N limit, we evaluate the full crossover function describing the temperature-dependent conductance.

Multichannel Kondo Effect in Superconducting Leads

Pradip Kattel, Abay Zhakenov, Natan Andrei

The traditional multichannel Kondo effect takes place when several gapless metallic electronic channels interact with a localized spin-$S$ impurity, with the number of channels $n$ exceeding the size of the impurity spin, $n>2S$, leading to the emergence of non-Fermi liquid impurity behavior at low temperatures. Here, we show that the effect can be realized even when the electronic degrees of freedom are strongly correlated and gapped. The system under consideration consists of a single spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity coupled isotropically to $n$ spin singlet superconducting channels realized by one-dimensional leads with quasi-long-range superconducting order. The competition between the Kondo and superconducting fluctuations induces multiple distinct ground states and boundary phases depending on the relative strengths of the bulk and boundary interactions. Using the Bethe Ansatz technique, we identify four regimes: an overscreened Kondo phase, a zero-mode phase, a Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) phase, and a local-moment phase with an unscreened impurity, each with its own experimental characteristic. We describe the renormalization-group flow, the excitation spectrum, and the full impurity thermodynamics in each phase. Remarkably, even in the presence of a bulk mass gap, the boundary critical behavior in the Kondo phase is governed by the same exponents as in the gapless theory with the low-energy impurity sector flowing to the $SU(2)_n$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) fixed point, and the impurity entropy monotonically decreasing as a function of temperature. In both the overscreened Kondo and zero-mode phases, the residual impurity entropy is $S_{\mathrm{imp}}(T \to 0) = \ln[2\cos(π/(n+2))]$. In the YSR and unscreened phases on the other hand the impurity entropy exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence and is effectively free at low temperatures with $S_{\mathrm{imp}}(T \to 0) = \ln 2$.

Frustration shapes multi-channel Kondo physics: a star graph perspective

Siddhartha Patra, Abhirup Mukherjee, Anirban Mukherjee +3 more

We study the overscreened multi-channel Kondo (MCK) model using the recently developed unitary renormalisation group technique. Our results display the importance of ground state degeneracy in explaining various important properties like the breakdown of screening and the presence of local non-Fermi liquids (NFLs). The impurity susceptibility of the intermediate coupling fixed point Hamiltonian in the zero-bandwidth (or star graph) limit shows a power-law divergence at low temperature. Despite the absence of inter-channel coupling in the MCK fixed point Hamiltonian, the study of mutual information between any two channels shows non-zero correlation between them. A spectral flow analysis of the star graph reveals that the degenerate ground state manifold possesses topological quantum numbers. Upon disentangling the impurity spin from its partners in the star graph, we find the presence of a local Mott liquid arising from inter-channel scattering processes. The low energy effective Hamiltonian obtained upon adding a finite non-zero conduction bath dispersion to the star graph Hamiltonian for both the two and three-channel cases displays the presence of local NFLs arising from inter-channel quantum fluctuations. Specifically, we confirm the presence of a local marginal Fermi liquid in the two channel case, whose properties show logarithmic scaling at low temperature as expected. Discontinuous behaviour is observed in several measures of ground state entanglement, signalling the underlying orthogonality catastrophe associated with the degenerate ground state manifold. We extend our results to underscreened and perfectly screened MCK models through duality arguments. A study of channel anisotropy under renormalisation flow reveals a series of quantum phase transitions due to the change in ground state degeneracy. Our work thus presents a template for the study of how a degenerate ground state manifold arising from symmetry and duality properties in a multichannel quantum impurity model can lead to novel multicritical phases at intermediate coupling.

Unveiling the Kondo cloud: Unitary renormalization-group study of the Kondo model

Anirban Mukherjee, Abhirup Mukherjee, N. S. Vidhyadhiraja +2 more

We analyze the single-channel Kondo model using the recently developed unitary renormalization-group (URG) method and obtain a comprehensive understanding of the Kondo screening cloud. The fixed-point low-energy Hamiltonian enables the computation of a plethora of thermodynamic quantities (specific heat, susceptibility, Wilson ratio, etc.) as well as spectral functions, all of which are found to be in good agreement with known results. By integrating out the impurity, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the excitations of the electrons comprising the Kondo cloud. This is found to contain both $k$-space number diagonal (Fermi liquid) and off-diagonal four-fermion scattering terms. Our conclusions are reinforced by a URG study of the two-particle entanglement and many-body correlations among members of the Kondo cloud and impurity. The entanglement between the impurity and a cloud electron, as well as between any two cloud electrons, is found to increase under flow towards the singlet ground state at the strong-coupling fixed point. Both the number diagonal and off-diagonal correlations within the conduction cloud are also found to increase as the impurity is screened under the flow, and the latter are found to be responsible for the macroscopic entanglement of the Kondo-singlet ground state. The URG flow enables an analytic computation of the phase shifts suffered by the conduction electrons at the strong-coupling fixed point. This reveals an orthogonality catastrophe between the local-moment and strong-coupling ground states and is related to a change in the Luttinger volume of the conduction bath under the crossover to strong coupling. Our results offer fresh insight into the nature of the emergent many-particle entanglement within the Kondo cloud and pave the way for further investigations in more exotic contexts such as the fixed point of the overscreened multichannel Kondo problem.

Dynamic mass generation and topological order in overscreened Kondo lattices

Ge Yang, Yashar Komijani

Multichannel Kondo lattice models are examples of strongly correlated electronic systems that exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior due to the presence of a continuous channel symmetry. Mean-field analyses have predicted that these systems undergo channel symmetry breaking at low temperature. We use the dynamical large- N technique to study temporal and spatial fluctuations of the multichannel Kondo model on a honeycomb lattice and find that this prediction is not generally true. Rather, we find a ( 2+1 )-dimensional conformally invariant fixed point, governed by critical exponents that are found numerically. When we break time-reversal symmetry by adding a Haldane mass to the conduction electrons, three phases, separated by continuous transitions, are discernible: one characterized by dynamic mass generation and spontaneous breaking of the channel symmetry, one where topological defects restore channel symmetry but preserve the gap, and one with a Kondo-coupled chiral spin liquid. We argue that the last phase is a fractional Chern insulator with anyonic excitations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Topological symplectic Kondo effect

Guangjie Li, Elio J. König, Jukka I. Väyrynen

Multiple conduction channels interacting with a quantum impurity---a spin in the conventional ``multichannel Kondo effect'' or a topological mesoscopic device (``topological Kondo effect'')---has been proposed as a platform to realize anyonic quasiparticles. However, the above implementations require either perfect channel symmetry or the use of Majorana fermions. Here we propose a Majorana-free mesoscopic setup which implements the Kondo effect of the symplectic Lie group and can harbor emergent anyons (including Majorana fermions, Fibonacci anyons, and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ parafermions) even in the absence of perfect channel symmetry. In addition to the detailed prescription of the implementation, we present the strong coupling solution by mapping the model to the multichannel Kondo effect associated to an internal $\text{SU}(2)$ symmetry and exploit conformal field theory to predict the nontrivial scaling of a variety of observables, including conductance, as a function of temperature. This work does not only open the door for robust Kondo-based anyon platforms, but also sheds light on the physics of strongly correlated materials with competing order parameters.
