Strong converse rate for asymptotic hypothesis testing in type III

Abstract

We extend from the hyperfinite setting to general von Neumann algebras Mosonyi and Ogawa's (2015) and Mosonyi and Hiai's (2023) results showing the operational interpretation of sandwiched relative Rényi entropy in the strong converse of hypothesis testing. The specific task is to distinguish between two quantum states given many copies. We use a reduction method of Haagerup, Junge, and Xu (2010) to approximate relative entropy inequalities in an arbitrary von Neumann algebra by those in finite von Neumann algebras. Within these finite von Neumann algebras, it is possible to approximate densities via finite spectrum operators, after which the quantum method of types reduces them to effectively commuting subalgebras. Generalizing beyond the hyperfinite setting shows that the operational meaning of sandwiched Rényi entropy is not restricted to the matrices but is a more fundamental property of quantum information. Furthermore, applicability in general von Neumann algebras opens potential new connections to random matrix theory and the quantum information theory of fundamental physics.

Conditioning on Subalgebras - Entropy Duality and Generalized Quantum Stein's Lemma in von Neumann Algebras

Bjarne Bergh, Li Gao, Mizanur Rahaman

We establish duality relations for conditional entropies relative to subalgebras of arbitrary von Neumann algebras, including the Umegaki relative entropy as well as the sandwiched- and Petz-Rényi divergences. Even in finite dimensions, these results extend the familiar dualities for conditional entropies from tensor-product subsystems to general subalgebras, while also lifting the framework to the fully infinite-dimensional setting. As an application, we establish an infinite-dimensional extension of quantum Stein's lemma when the alternative hypothesis is the state space of a finite-index subalgebra, which gives an operational interpretation of the relative entropy to a subalgebra as the optimal asymptotic error exponent in composite quantum hypothesis testing-the first beyond finite dimensions.

The Strong Converse Exponent of Discriminating Infinite-Dimensional Quantum States

Milán Mosonyi

Abstract The sandwiched Rényi divergences of two finite-dimensional density operators quantify their asymptotic distinguishability in the strong converse domain. This establishes the sandwiched Rényi divergences as the operationally relevant ones among the infinitely many quantum extensions of the classical Rényi divergences for Rényi parameter $$\alpha >1$$ α > 1 . The known proof of this goes by showing that the sandwiched Rényi divergence coincides with the regularized measured Rényi divergence, which in turn is proved by asymptotic pinching, a fundamentally finite-dimensional technique. Thus, while the notion of the sandwiched Rényi divergences was extended recently to density operators on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space (in fact, even for states of an arbitrary von Neumann algebra), these quantities were so far lacking an operational interpretation similar to the finite-dimensional case, and it has also been open whether they coincide with the regularized measured Rényi divergences. In this paper we fill this gap by answering both questions in the positive for density operators on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, using a simple finite-dimensional approximation technique. We also initiate the study of the sandwiched Rényi divergences, and the related problem of the strong converse exponent, for pairs of positive semi-definite operators that are not necessarily trace-class (this corresponds to considering weights in a general von Neumann algebra setting). This is motivated by the need to define conditional Rényi entropies in the infinite-dimensional setting, while it might also be interesting from the purely mathematical point of view of extending the concept of Rényi (and other) divergences to settings beyond the standard one of positive trace-class operators (positive normal functionals in the von Neumann algebra setting). In this spirit, we also discuss the definition and some properties of the more general family of Rényi $$(\alpha ,z)$$ ( α , z ) -divergences of positive semi-definite operators on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space.

Relative entropy for von Neumann subalgebras

Li Gao, Marius Junge, Nicholas D. LaRacuente

We revisit the connection between index and relative entropy for an inclusion of finite von Neumann algebras. We observe that the Pimsner–Popa index connects to sandwiched [Formula: see text]-Rényi relative entropy for all [Formula: see text], including Umegaki’s relative entropy at [Formula: see text]. Based on that, we introduce a new notation of relative entropy to a subalgebra which generalizes subfactors index. This relative entropy has application in estimating decoherence time of quantum Markov semigroups.

Sandwiched Renyi Relative Entropy in AdS/CFT

Reginald J. Caginalp

We explore the role of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy in AdS/CFT and in finite-dimensional models of holographic quantum error correction. In particular, in the context of operator algebra quantum error correction, we discuss a suitable generalization of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy over finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras. It is then shown that the equality of bulk and boundary sandwiched relative Renyi entropies is equivalent to algebraic encoding of bulk and boundary states, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the equality of bulk and boundary relative entropy, and subregion duality. This adds another item to an equivalence theorem between the last four items established in arxiv:1607.03901. We then discuss the sandwiched Renyi relative entropy defined in terms of modular operators, and show that this becomes the definition naturally suited to the finite-dimensional models of holographic quantum error correction. Finally, we explore some numerical calculations of sandwiched Renyi relative entropies for a simple holographic random tensor network in order to obtain a better understanding of corrections to the exact equality of bulk and boundary sandwiched relative Renyi entropy.

On Strong Converse Theorems for Quantum Hypothesis Testing and Channel Coding

Hao–Chung Cheng, Gao, Li

Strong converse theorems refer to the study of impossibility results in information theory. In particular, Mosonyi and Ogawa established a one-shot strong converse bound for quantum hypothesis testing [Comm. Math. Phys, 334(3), 2014], which servers as a primitive tool for establishing a variety of tight strong converse theorems in quantum information theory. In this short note, we demonstrate an alternative one-line proof for this bound via the variational expression of measured Rényi divergences [Lett. Math. Phys, 107(12), 2017]. Then, we show that the variational expression is a direct consequence of Hölder's inequality.

Strong converse theorems using Rényi entropies

Felix Leditzky, Mark M. Wilde, Nilanjana Datta

We use a Rényi entropy method to prove strong converse theorems for certain information-theoretic tasks which involve local operations and quantum (or classical) communication between two parties. These include state redistribution, coherent state merging, quantum state splitting, measurement compression with quantum side information, randomness extraction against quantum side information, and data compression with quantum side information. The method we employ in proving these results extends ideas developed by Sharma [preprint arXiv:1404.5940 [quant-ph] (2014)], which he used to give a new proof of the strong converse theorem for state merging. For state redistribution, we prove the strong converse property for the boundary of the entire achievable rate region in the (e, q)-plane, where e and q denote the entanglement cost and quantum communication cost, respectively. In the case of measurement compression with quantum side information, we prove a strong converse theorem for the classical communication cost, which is a new result extending the previously known weak converse. For the remaining tasks, we provide new proofs for strong converse theorems previously established using smooth entropies. For each task, we obtain the strong converse theorem from explicit bounds on the figure of merit of the task in terms of a Rényi generalization of the optimal rate. Hence, we identify candidates for the strong converse exponents for each task discussed in this paper. To prove our results, we establish various new entropic inequalities, which might be of independent interest. These involve conditional entropies and mutual information derived from the sandwiched Rényi divergence. In particular, we obtain novel bounds relating these quantities, as well as the Rényi conditional mutual information, to the fidelity of two quantum states.
