Abstract

A bstract Recently, Bousso and Penington (BP) made a proposal for the entanglement wedge associated to a gravitating bulk region. In this paper, we derive this proposal in time-reflection symmetric settings using the gravitational path integral. To do this, we exploit the connection between random tensor networks (RTNs) and fixed-geometry states in gravity. We define the entropy of a bulk region in an RTN by removing tensors in that region and computing the entropy of the open legs thus generated in the “hollowed” RTN. We thus derive the BP proposal for RTNs and hence, also for fixed-geometry states in gravity. By then expressing a general holographic state as a superposition over fixed-geometry states and using a diagonal approximation, we provide a general gravitational path integral derivation of the BP proposal. We demonstrate that the saddles computing the Rényi entropy S n depend on how the bulk region is gauge-invariantly specified. Nevertheless, we show that the BP proposal is universally reproduced in the n → 1 limit.

Subregion observer rules from generalized entanglement wedges

Lana Bozanic, Kenneth Higginbotham, Chris Waddell

We consider rules for modifying holographic tensor networks proposed in two independent contexts: by the Colorado (CO) group [arXiv:2503.09681] to incorporate observers in holographic maps, and by Kaya-Rath-Ritchie (KRR) [arXiv:2506.10064] to derive the Bousso-Penington generalized entanglement wedge proposal. Interestingly, these two sets of tensor network rules are exactly equivalent. This suggests a more general connection between these Abdalla-Antonini-Iliesiu-Levine (AAIL) inspired observer rules and generalized entanglement wedges. To pursue this connection, we use KRR's analogous rules for the gravitational path integral (based on fixed geometry states) to generalize AAIL's path integral rules to include observers occupying a bulk subregion of a closed universe. Based on work [arXiv:2606.28484] in collaboration with Lana Bozanic and Chris Waddell.

Towards bit threads in general gravitational spacetimes

Dong-Hui Du, Jia-Rui Sun

A bstract The concept of the generalized entanglement wedge was recently proposed by Bousso and Penington, which states that any bulk gravitational region a possesses an associated generalized entanglement wedge E ( a ) ⊃ a on a static Cauchy surface M in general gravitational spacetimes, where E ( a ) may contain an entanglement island I ( a ). It suggests that the fine-grained entropy for bulk region a is given by the generalized entropy S gen ( E ( a )). Motivated by this proposal, we extend the quantum bit thread description to general gravitational spacetimes, no longer limited to the AdS spacetime. By utilizing the convex optimization techniques, a dual flow description for the generalized entropy S gen ( E ( a )) of a bulk gravitational region a is established on the static Cauchy surface M , such that S gen ( E ( a )) is equal to the maximum flux of any flow that starts from the boundary ∂M and ends at bulk region a , or equivalently, the maximum number of bit threads that connect the boundary ∂M to the bulk region a . In addition, the nesting property of flows is also proved. Thus the basic properties of the entropy for bulk regions, i.e. the monotonicity, subadditivity, Araki-Lieb inequality and strong subadditivity, can be verified from flow perspectives by using properties of flows, such as the nesting property. Moreover, in max thread configurations, we find that there exists some lower bounds on the bulk entanglement entropy of matter fields in the region E ( a ) \ a , particularly on an entanglement island region I ( a ) ⊂ ( E ( a ) \ a ), as required by the existence of a nontrivial generalized entanglement wedge. Our quantum bit thread formulation may provide a way to investigate more fine-grained entanglement structures in general spacetimes.

Coarse-grained fixed-point tensor networks and holographic reflected entropy in 3D gravity

Ning Bao, Jinwei Chu, Yikun Jiang +1 more

A bstract We use the framework of fixed-point BCFT tensor networks to present a microscopic CFT derivation of the correspondence between reflected entropy (RE) and entanglement wedge cross section (EW) in AdS 3 /CFT 2 , for both bipartite and multipartite settings. These fixed-point tensor networks, obtained by triangulating Euclidean CFT path integrals, allow us to explicitly construct the canonical purification via cutting-and-gluing CFT path integrals. Employing modular flow in the large- c limit, we demonstrate that these intrinsic CFT manipulations reproduce bulk geometric prescriptions, without assuming the AdS/CFT dictionary. The emergence of bulk geometry is traced to coarse-graining over heavy states in the large- c limit. Universal coarse-grained BCFT data for compact 2D CFTs, through the relation to Liouville theory with ZZ boundary conditions, yields hyperbolic geometry on the Cauchy slice. The corresponding averaged replica partition functions reproduce all candidate EWs, arising from different averaging patterns, with the dominant one providing the correct RE and EW. In this way, many heuristic tensor-network intuitions in toy models are made precise and established directly from intrinsic CFT data.

Algebraic structure in holographic tensor networks

In a previous work 2511.21852, we explored the hypothesis that in general theories of quantum gravity, spacetime regions known as generalized entanglement wedges (introduced by Bousso and Penington) have an associated subalgebra of observables in a semiclassical limit. We defined an entropy associated with these subalgebras that obeys the same monotonicity and strong subadditivity properties as the generalized gravitational entropy of generalized entanglement wedges. Here, we test aspects of these ideas making use of tensor network toy models for holography. In this context, the analog of a generalized entanglement wedge is a region for which no region containing it has a smaller number of boundary legs. In the limit of large bond dimension (analogous to the semiclassical limit), we argue that each such region has a canonically associated subalgebra of the full algebra of observables on the boundary Hilbert space, as well as a family of unitarily related von Neumann factor subalgebras. We investigate in detail how various algebraic operations on these subalgebras (e.g. their intersections, joins, and commutants) are related to corresponding geometrical operations on the tensor network regions. We study to what extent the monotonicity and strong subadditivity properties of generalized entropy for generalized entanglement wedges follow from properties of our algebraic entropy. We also introduce an alternative entropic quantity $S(ω|| ω\circ E_{\mathcal{A}'})$ associated with a subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ that also obeys monotonicity and strong subadditivity properties with suitable conditions. Finally, we explain how to define a type $II_1$ von Neumann algebra based on an infinite family of random tensor networks with increasing bond dimension such that the regions corresponding to generalized entanglement wedges can be associated with exact subalgebras of this full algebra.

Flat entanglement spectra in fixed-area states of quantum gravity

Xi Dong, Daniel Harlow, Donald M. Marolf

A bstract We use the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational path integral to investigate gravita- tional entanglement at leading order O (1 /G ). We argue that semiclassical states prepared by a Euclidean path integral have the property that projecting them onto a subspace in which the Ryu-Takayanagi or Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surface has definite area gives a state with a flat entanglement spectrum at this order in gravitational perturbation theory. This means that the reduced density matrix can be approximated as proportional to the identity to the extent that its Renyi entropies Sn are independent of n at this order. The n -dependence of Sn in more general states then arises from sums over the RT/HRT- area, which are generally dominated by different values of this area for each n . This provides a simple picture of gravitational entanglement, bolsters the connection between holographic systems and tensor network models, clarifies the bulk interpretation of alge- braic centers which arise in the quantum error-correcting description of holography, and strengthens the connection between bulk and boundary modular Hamiltonians described by Jafferis, Lewkowycz, Maldacena, and Suh.

Holographic tensor networks with bulk gauge symmetries

Xi Dong, Sean McBride, Wayne W. Weng

A bstract Tensor networks are useful toy models for understanding the structure of entanglement in holographic states and reconstruction of bulk operators within the entanglement wedge. They are, however, constrained to only prepare so-called “fixed-area states” with flat entanglement spectra, limiting their utility in understanding general features of holographic entanglement. Here, we overcome this limitation by constructing a variant of random tensor networks that enjoys bulk gauge symmetries. Our model includes a gauge theory on a general graph, whose gauge-invariant states are fed into a random tensor network. We show that the model satisfies the quantum-corrected Ryu-Takayanagi formula with a nontrivial area operator living in the center of a gauge-invariant algebra. We also demonstrate nontrivial, n -dependent contributions to the Rényi entropy and Rényi mutual information from this area operator, a feature shared by general holographic states.
