Dynamic formation of a supersolid phase in a mixture of ultracold bosonic and fermionic atoms

Abstract

We numerically study the dynamical properties of a mixture consisting of a dipolar condensate and a degenerate Fermi gas in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. In particular, we focus on the system's response to a temporal variation in the interaction strength between bosons and fermions. When the interspecies attraction becomes sufficiently strong, we observe a phase transition to a supersolid state. This conclusion is supported by the emergence of an out-of-phase Goldstone mode in the excitation spectrum.

Supersolidity of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates induced by coupling to fermions

The authors report that the dipolar ultracold atomic Bose-Fermi mixture enters the supersolid phase when the interaction parameters are appropriately tuned. This behavior is supported by the appearance of low-energy Goldstone and Higgs excitation modes upon perturbation of the system.

Supersolidity of cold-atom Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

Peter P. Orth, Doron L. Bergman, Karyn Le Hur

We investigate a cold-atom mixture of spinless bosons and fermions in two-dimensional optical lattices. In the presence of a nested Fermi surface, the bosons may develop a fascinating supersolid behavior characterized by a finite superfluid density as well as a spatial density wave order. Focusing on the triangular lattice geometry and combining a general Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson approach with microscopically derived mean-field theory, we find an exotic supersolid phase at a fermionic band filling of ${n}_{f}=3∕4$ with a kagome-type crystalline order. We also address the case of anisotropic hopping amplitudes and show that striped supersolid phases emerge on the square and triangular lattices. For weak interactions, the supersolid competes with phase separation. For strong intraspecies and interspecies interactions, with the total number of fermions and bosons corresponding to one particle per site, the bosons form an alternating Mott insulator ground state. Finally, for a mixture of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ and $^{23}\mathrm{Na}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, we show that supersolidity can be observed in the range of accessible temperatures in the square lattice geometry.

Two-dimensional miscible-immiscible supersolid and droplet crystal state in a homonuclear dipolar bosonic mixture

Soumyadeep Halder, Subrata Das, Sonjoy Majumder

The recent realization of a binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate [A. Trautmann et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 213601 (2018)] presents new exciting aspects for studying quantum droplets and supersolids in a binary mixture. Motivated by this experiment, we study the ground-state phases and dynamics of a Dy-Dy mixture. The dipolar bosonic mixture exhibits qualitatively novel and rich physics. Relying on the three-dimensional numerical simulations in the extended Gross-Pitaevskii framework, we unravel the ground-state phase diagrams and characterize their different possible phases. The emergent phases include single-droplet (SD), multiple-droplets (MD), doubly supersolid (SS), and superfluid (SF) states in both miscible and immiscible phases. Intriguing mixed ground states are observed for an imbalanced binary mixture, including a combination of SS-SF, SS-MD, and SS-SS phases. We also explore the dynamics across the phase boundaries by linear quenches of interspecies and intraspecies scattering lengths. During these dynamical processes, we observe an abrupt change in phase which initially results in some instability in the system and forms some metastable states in the intermediate timescale. However, the state produced in long-time evolution is similar to our predicted ground state. Although we demonstrate the possible results for a Dy-Dy mixture and for a specific parameter range of intraspecies and interspecies scattering lengths, our results are in general valid for other dipolar mixtures and may become an important benchmark for future experimental scenarios.

Fermionic bright soliton in a boson-fermion mixture

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We use a time-dependent dynamical mean-field-hydrodynamic model to study the formation of fermionic bright solitons in a trapped degenerate Fermi gas mixed with a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-one-dimensional cigar-shaped geometry. Due to a strong Pauli-blocking repulsion among spin-polarized fermions at short distances there cannot be bright fermionic solitons in the case of repulsive boson-fermion interactions. However, we demonstrate that stable bright fermionic solitons can be formed for a sufficiently attractive boson-fermion interaction in a boson-fermion mixture. We also consider the formation of fermionic solitons in the presence of a periodic axial optical-lattice potential. These solitons can be formed and studied in the laboratory with present technology.

Ground-state stability and excitation spectrum of a one-dimensional dipolar supersolid

Tobias Ilg, Hans Peter Büchler

We study the behavior of the excitation spectrum across the quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid phase of a dipolar Bose gas confined to a one-dimensional geometry. Including the leading beyond-mean-field effects within an effective Hamiltonian, the analysis is based on Bogoliubov theory with several order parameters accounting for the superfluid as well as solid structure. We find fast convergence of the ground-state energy in the supersolid with the number of order parameters and demonstrate a stable excitation spectrum with two Goldstone modes and an amplitude mode in the low-energy regime. Our results suggest that there exists an experimentally achievable parameter regime for dysprosium atoms, where the supersolid phase exhibits a stable excitation spectrum in the thermodynamic limit and the transition into the supersolid phase is of second order driven by the roton instability.

Creating a supersolid in one-dimensional Bose mixtures

Ludwig Mathey, Ippei Danshita, Charles W. Clark

We identify a one-dimensional supersolid phase in a binary mixture of near-hard-core bosons with weak, local interspecies repulsion. We find realistic conditions under which such a phase, defined here as the coexistence of quasisuperfluidity and quasi-charge-density-wave order, can be produced and observed in finite ultracold atom systems in a harmonic trap. Our analysis is based on Luttinger liquid theory supported by numerical calculations using the time-evolving block decimation method. Clear experimental signatures of these two orders can be found, respectively, in time-of-flight interference patterns and the structure factor $S(k)$ derived from density correlations.
