An open quantum system of coupled rotors

Abstract

A quantum mechanical system of two coupled rotors (particles constrained to move on a circle) is studied from an open quantum systems point of view. One of the rotors is integrated out and the reduced density operator of the other rotor is studied. Its eigenvalues are worked out explicitly using the properties of Mathieu functions, and the von Neumann entropy, which is a standard measure of entanglement, is computed in terms of the Fourier coefficients defining the Mathieu functions. Furthermore, upon introducing a time-periodic delta kick and making one of the rotors much heavier than the other, the two-rotor system can be interpreted as a system-bath model, allowing us to introduce a series of approximations to derive a master equation of the Lindblad type describing the time-evolution of the reduced density operator.

Coupled Quantum Kicked Rotors Under Lindbladian Dynamics

Adam Bäck, Philip Santi Straihamer

Lindblad dynamics is one of the most popular approaches to study open quantum systems. This paper studies a kicked rotor; in particular, a two rotor system where one of the rotors is treated as the environment and the other is studied with the Lindblad master equation. The energy levels are solved explicitly in terms of Bessel functions and the results show that the energy levels exhibit dissipative behavior with variance in momentum increasing as $\langle\hat{p}^2\rangle=2Dt$ similar to the classical kicked rotor. This result shows us how interaction between systems can break down quantum phenomena and result in more classical results, bridging the gap between the quantum and the classical world.

Open quantum entanglement: a study of two atomic system in static patch of de Sitter space

Akhtar, S., Choudhury, S., Chowdhury, S. +3 more

In this work, our prime objective is to study non-locality and long-range effect of two-body correlation using quantum entanglement from the various information-theoretic measure in the static patch of De Sitter space using a two-body Open Quantum System (OQS). The OQS is described by two entangled atoms which are surrounded by a thermal bath, which is modelled by a massless probe scalar field. Firstly, we partially trace over the bath field and construct the Gorini Kossakowski Sudarshan Lindblad (GSKL) master equation, which describes the time evolution of the reduced subsystem density matrix. This GSKL master equation is characterized by two components, these are-Spin chain interaction Hamiltonian and the Lindbladian. To fix the form of both of them, using Schwinger-Keldysh formalism we compute the Wightman functions for probe massless scalar field. Using this result along with the large time equilibrium behaviour we obtain the analytical solution for reduced density matrix. Further using this solution we compute Von-Neumann entropy, R$e'$nyi entropy, logarithmic negativity, entanglement of formation, concurrence and quantum discord in a static patch of De Sitter space. Finally, we have studied the violation of Bell-CHSH inequality, which is the key ingredient to study non-locality in primordial cosmology.

Time Evolution of States for Open Quantum Systems. The quadratic case

Robert, Didier

Our main goal in this paper is to extend to any system of coupled quadratic Hamiltonians some properties known for systems of quantum harmonic oscillators related with the Brownian Quantum Motion model. In a first part we get a rather general formula for the purity (or the linear entropy) in a short time approximation. In a second part we establish a master equation (or a Fokker-Planck type equation) for the time evolution of the reduced matrix density for bilinearly coupled quadratic Hamiltonians. The Hamiltonians and the bilinear coupling can be time dependent. Moreover we give an explicit formula for the solution of this master equation so that the time evolution of the reduced density at time $t$ is connected with the reduced density at initial time $t_0$ for $t_0 \leq t

Open Quantum Systems and Coherent States

Didier Robert, Monique Combescure

In this chapter we study some properties of systems of coupled quadratic quantum Hamiltonians. The well known example is coupled harmonic oscillators appearing in the Quantum Brownian Motion. An open system is a physical (S) interacting with the environment (E) such that the total system \((S\cup E)\) is isolated from the rest of the universe. So we have two independent Hamiltonians \(\hat{H}_S\), \(\hat{H}_E\) and an interaction \(\hat{V}\) between (S) and (E). The main problem discussed for open systems is to understand the dynamical action of the interaction \(\hat{V}\) with the environment on the time dependent evolution of (S) which is now irreversible because a part of its energy escapes to the environment. An important physical effect of the interaction of the environment on a quantum system is decoherence which give an explanation for the mechanism driving the quantum-to-classical transition. We restrict ourself to few mathematical problems related with this very active field of research in physics [155, 200, 231, 270]. In a first part we study the purity of a state of (S) (or the linear entropy) in a short time approximation. In a second part we discuss the separability of bipartite systems. In a third part we establish a master equation (or a Fokker-Planck type equation) for the time evolution of the reduced matrix density for coupled quadratic Hamiltonians by a bilinear inter-action. We give an explicit formula for the solution of this master equation so that the time evolution of the reduced density at time t is written as a convolution integral for the reduced density at initial time \(t_0=0\), with a Gaussian kernel, for \(0 \le t < t_c\) where \(t_c\in ]0, \infty ]\) is a critical time such that reversibility is lost for \(t > t_c\) if \(t_c<+\infty \). Some manifestations of decoherence, for \(t>0\) small enough, are proved on our simple model which is similar to a representation of the Schrödinger cat.
