Abstract

The impact of technical limitations on pulse shaping used to generate a CV QKD signal is quantified in terms of the attainable secure key rate. Optimization of key spectral efficiency for Gaussian-modulated CV QKD with truncated and discretized root-raised cosine profiles is discussed.

Mode Mismatch Mitigation in Gaussian-Modulated CV-QKD

Svitlana Matsenko, Amirhossein Ghazisaeidi, Marcin Jarzyna +4 more

Technical limitations in pulse shaping lead to mode mismatch, which significantly reduces the secure key rate in CV-QKD systems. To address this, a machine learning approach is employed to optimize the transmitter pulse-shape, effectively minimizing mode mismatch and yielding substantial performance improvements. ©2025

Effect of filter shape on excess noise performance in continuous variable quantum key distribution with Gaussian modulation

Hou-Man Chin, Nitin Jain, Darko Zibar +2 more

An attractive implementation for quantum cryptography is the continuous variable variation, as it relies on standard telecommunication components. Modulating the quantum signal using a Gaussian format is attractive since it has been proven to be secure. This work investigates the effect of the roll-off of a root raised cosine pulse shaping and matched filter on the excess noise performance of a Gaussian modulated quantum key distribution system in a simulated back to back configuration. Contrary to intuition, it is found that the roll-off parameter does not significantly impact the performance of the system.

Feasibility of higher key rate continuous variable quantum key distribution with multi-mode signals

Rupesh Kumar, Timothy P. Spiller

This paper examines the feasibility of multi-mode Gaussian modulated continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems for higher rate secure key generation at longer distances. We consider different multi-mode transmission scenarios and propose a feasible experimental set-up for a previously proposed multi-mode CV-QKD system with joint quadrature measurement [1]. We compare signal to noise ratios (SNR) of multi-mode schemes and show many fold improvements in the joint quadrature detection based CV-QKD system.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with non-Gaussian operations

Liyun Hu, M. Al-Amri, Zeyang Liao +1 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) provides an effective way to obtain the high secret key rate, but is limited by practical techniques. To overcome this limitation, we investigate the performance of CV-QKD protocols when non-Gaussian operations are applied to both sides of the channels, including photon subtraction and addition, and photon catalysis. A comparison is also made between Gaussian modulation and non-Gaussian modulation. We show that the optimal transmission distance cannot be improved by non-Gaussian modulation at the sender's side, but it can be improved by single-photon catalysis at the receiver's side. For a given modulation variance that exceeds a certain threshold, the performance of the zero-photon catalysis at the sender's side is the best when compared with other non-Gaussian modulations (except single-photon catalysis at the receiver's side), and it can always reach the optimal distance. Our paper will provide a useful insight for the use of non-Gaussian modulation to other CV-QKD protocols.

Discretized Gaussian Modulation-Based Continuous Variable (CV)-QKD

Ivan B. Djordjević

To overcome the low-reconciliation-efficiency problem of Gaussian modulation (GM)-based-CV-QKD, we propose to use discretized-GM-based-CV-QKD. This scheme has complexity and reconciliation-efficiency similar to discrete modulation (DM)-based-CV-QKD and at the same time solves for the problem of nonexistence of strict security proofs for DM-CV-QKD under collective attacks.

Impact of homodyne receiver bandwidth and signal modulation patterns on the continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Jianqiang Liu, Yanxia Cao, Pu Perry Wang +4 more

In continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), the key information are encoded on quadratures of the optical field, which are measured via balanced homodyne detector (BHD). The bandwidth of the BHD is one of key parameters for precise characterization of quantum states. We establish a theoretical model to analyze the impact of the BHD bandwidth and signal modulation patterns on the channel parameters estimation of CV-QKD systems. Based on the proposed model, the secure key rate of a practical CV-QKD system under different BHD bandwidths and signal modulation patterns are investigated. Our results show that insufficient BHD bandwidth will result in wrong estimate of the transmission loss and excess noise, which significantly affects the performance of CV-QKD systems. Given the BHD bandwidth, there exists an optimal signal repetition rate that maximizes the secure key rate. The BHD bandwidth requirement of the QKD system increases with the transmission distance for large duty cycle pulse. Furthermore, the root raised-cosine pulse signal modulation performs better than the square pulse signal modulation in general.
