Gapped boundaries of Kitaev's quantum double models: A lattice realization of anyon condensation from Lagrangian algebras

Abstract

The macroscopic theory of anyon condensation, rooted in the categorical structure of topological excitations, provides a complete classification of gapped boundaries in topologically ordered systems, where distinct boundaries correspond to the condensation of different Lagrangian algebras. However, an intrinsic and direct understanding of anyon condensation in lattice models, grounded in the framework of Lagrangian algebras, remains undeveloped. In this paper, we propose a systematic framework for constructing all gapped boundaries of Kitaev's quantum double models directly from the data of Lagrangian algebras. Central to our approach is the observation that bulk interactions in the quantum double models admit two complementary interpretations: the anyon-creating picture and the anyon-probing picture. Generalizing this insight to the boundary, we derive the consistency condition for boundary ribbon operators that respect the mathematical axiomatic structure of Lagrangian algebras. Solving these conditions yields explicit expressions for the local boundary interactions required to realize gapped boundaries. We also provide three families of solutions that cover a broad range of cases. Our construction provides a microscopic characterization of the bulk-to-boundary anyon condensation dynamics via the action of ribbon operators. Moreover, all these boundary terms are supported within a common effective Hilbert space, making further studies on pure boundary phase transitions natural and convenient. Given the broad applicability of anyon condensation theory, we believe that our approach can be generalized to planar topological codes, extended string-net models, or higher-dimensional topologically ordered systems.

Algorithmic Construction of Gapped Boundaries for Topological Stabilizer Codes: A Route to Low-Overhead Planar qLDPC Codes

Anonymous, Bowen Yang, Joseph T. Iosue +1 more

Quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes promise low-overhead fault-tolerant quantum memory, but many leading constructions are naturally defined on periodic lattices, whereas scalable quantum hardware favors planar architectures with open boundaries. In this work, we develop a general operator-algebraic framework and computational algorithms for constructing all gapped boundaries and defects of two-dimensional topological Pauli stabilizer codes. Starting from a truncated bulk code, our method identifies boundary gauge operators, boundary anyons, and their string operators, and then constructs microscopic boundary Hamiltonians through anyon condensation and topological-order completion, thereby eliminating local logical operators near the boundary. We establish a one-to-one bulk-boundary correspondence between bulk anyons and excitations of the anomalous boundary subsystem code, enabling fusion rules, topological spins, and braiding statistics to be extracted directly from the boundary operator algebra. For translation-invariant codes, Laurent-polynomial representations reduce these tasks to finite matrix computations based on Hermite and Smith normal forms, enabling automated constructions for Z d qudits of both prime and composite dimension. We demonstrate the framework on toric, color, double-semion, six-semion, and anomalous three-fermion codes, and apply it to bivariate bicycle codes, revealing large logical dimensions and unusually long translation periods for anyon strings. By systematically converting bulk topological data into explicit boundary and defect Hamiltonians, our framework can serve as a foundation for constructing low-overhead planar qLDPC codes with open boundaries and for engineering fault-tolerant logical operations.

Boundary algebras of the Kitaev Quantum Double model

Mario Tomba, Shuqi Wei, Brett Hungar +4 more

The recent article [arXiv:2307.12552] gave local topological order (LTO) axioms for a quantum spin system, showed they held in Kitaev's Toric Code and in Levin-Wen string net models, and gave a bulk boundary correspondence to describe bulk excitations in terms of the boundary net of algebras. In this article, we prove the LTO axioms for Kitaev's Quantum Double model for a finite group $G$. We identify the boundary nets of algebras with fusion categorical nets associated to $(\mathsf{Hilb}(G),\mathbb{C}[G])$ or $(\mathsf{Rep}(G),\mathbb{C}^G)$ depending on whether the boundary cut is rough or smooth respectively. This allows us to make connections to work of Ogata on the type of the cone von Neumann algebras in the algebraic quantum field theory approach to topological superselection sectors. We show that the boundary algebras can also be calculated from a trivial $G$-symmetry protected topological phase ($G$-SPT), and that the gauging map preserves the boundary algebras. Finally, we compute the boundary algebras for the (3+1)D Quantum Double model associated to an abelian group.

Twin Algebras: Condensable Algebras beyond Anyons

Yuhan Gai, Sakura Schafer-Nameki, Alison Warman

Condensable algebras in 2+1d non-chiral topological orders characterize gapped boundary conditions and interfaces. Applied to the Symmetry Topological Field Theory, they allow classification of symmetric gapped phases and impose sharp constraints on possible phase transitions. A condensable algebra is specified not only by its underlying set of anyons, which end on the boundary or interface, but also by its algebra structure. We introduce the concept of twin condensable algebras, which have the same anyon decomposition, but inequivalent algebra structure. We revisit the classification of condensable algebras in $\mathcal{Z}(\text{Vec}_G^ω)$, i.e. in group-theoretical topological orders for finite groups $G$ with anomaly $ω$. In this context we are able to identify twin algebras that arise from different mechanisms, such as subgroup data, SPT cocycles, and symmetry actions. In particular, we construct infinite families of examples of twins from so-called Gassmann triples, and exhibit cases in which the reduced topological orders are inequivalent despite having identical anyon content. Physically, twin algebras describe distinct symmetric phases that have isomorphic spaces of ground states, but inequivalent order parameters. Such twin phases never exhibit relative spontaneous symmetry breaking, and can be used to construct phase transitions without hidden symmetry breaking, which are intrinsically beyond Landau transitions.

Boundary Hamiltonian Theory for Gapped Topological Orders

Yuting Hu, Yidun Wan, Yong-Shi Wu

We report our systematic construction of the lattice Hamiltonian model of topological orders on open surfaces, with explicit boundary terms. We do this mainly for the Levin-Wen string-net model. The full Hamiltonian in our approach yields a topologically protected, gapped energy spectrum, with the corresponding wave functions robust under topology-preserving transformations of the lattice of the system. We explicitly present the wavefunctions of the ground states and boundary elementary excitations. The creation and hopping operators of boundary quasi-particles are constructed. It is found that given a bulk topological order, the gapped boundary conditions are classified by Frobenius algebras in its input data. Emergent topological properties of the ground states and boundary excitations are characterized by (bi-) modules over Frobenius algebras.

Boundary and domain wall theories of 2d generalized quantum double model

Zhian Jia, Dagomir Kaszlikowski, Sheng Tan

Abstract The generalized quantum double lattice realization of 2d topological orders based on Hopf algebras is discussed in this work. Both left-module and right-module constructions are investigated. The ribbon operators and the classification of topological excitations based on the representations of the quantum double of Hopf algebras are discussed. To generalize the model to a 2d surface with boundaries and surface defects, we present a systematic construction of the boundary Hamiltonian and domain wall Hamiltonian. The algebraic data behind the gapped boundary and domain wall are comodule algebras and bicomodule algebras. The topological excitations in the boundary and domain wall are classified by bimodules over these algebras. The ribbon operator realization of boundary-bulk duality is also discussed. Finally, via the Hopf tensor network representation of the quantum many-body states, we solve the ground state of the model in the presence of the boundary and domain wall.
