Abstract

We present numerical calculations of the energetic separation between different spin states (singlet, triplet and quintet) for a simplified model of a deoxy-myoglobin protein using the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. The goal is to gain insight into the workflow and challenges of VQE simulations for transition metal complexes, with emphasis on methodology over hardware-specific implementation. The numerical calculations are performed using an in-house statevector simulator with single- and multi-reference trial wavefunctions based on the k-unitary pair coupled-cluster generalized singles and doubles or k-UpCCGSD ansatz. The spin-state energetics for active spaces of increasing size up to 10 spatial orbitals (20 spin orbitals or qubits) are computed with VQE and were found to agree with the classical complete active self-consistent field or CASSCF method to within 1-4 kcal/mol. We evaluate relevant multi-reference diagnostics and show that the spin states computed with VQE possess a sufficient degree of multi-reference character to highlight the presence of strong electron correlation effects. Our numerical simulations show that in the ideal case, the VQE algorithm is capable of reproducing spin-state energetics of strongly correlated systems such as transition metal complexes for both single- and multi-reference trial wavefunctions, asymptotically achieving good agreement with results from classical methods as the number of active orbitals increases.

Towards the simulation of transition-metal oxides of the cathode battery materials using VQE methods

Marwa H. Farag, Joydip Ghosh

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is a hybrid quantum-classical technique that leverages noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) hardware to obtain the minimum eigenvalue of a model Hamiltonian. VQE has so far been used to simulate condensed matter systems as well as quantum chemistry of small molecules. In this work, we employ VQE methods to obtain the ground-state energy of LiCoO$_2$, a candidate transition metal oxide used for battery cathodes. We simulate Li$_2$Co$_2$O$_4$ and Co$_2$O$_4$ gas-phase models, which represent the lithiated and delithiated states during the discharge and the charge of the Li-ion battery, respectively. Computations are performed using a statevector simulator with a single reference state for three different trial wavefunctions: unitary coupled-cluster singles and doubles (UCCSD), unitary coupled-cluster generalized singles and doubles (UCCGSD) and k-unitary pair coupled-cluster generalized singles and doubles (k-UpCCGSD). The resources in terms of circuit depth, two-qubit entangling gates and wavefunction parameters are analyzed. We find that the k-UpCCGSD with k=5 produces results similar to UCCSD but at a lower cost. Finally, the performance of VQE methods is benchmarked against the classical wavefunction-based methods, such as coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) and complete active space configuration interaction (CASCI). Our results show that VQE methods quantitatively agree with the results obtained from CCSD. However, the comparison against the CASCI results clearly suggests that advanced trial wavefunctions are likely necessary to capture the multi-reference characteristics as well as the correlations emerging from high-level electronic excitations.

A Simulation of Hydrazine Molecule’s Potential Energy Surface using Variational Quantum Eigensolver Algorithm

Godwin Gomosma, Mohammad Kemal Agusta, Hermawan Kresno Dipojono

Abstract Quantum computing is a technology that utilizes the principles of quantum mechanics to perform complex computational processes. In this work, we use Qiskit Module from IBM to do quantum computational calculation using Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. VQE is a hybrid quantum-classical method that combines a quantum computer to measure energies and a classical computer to process the measurement results and update the parameters of the quantum computer. The purpose of VQE is to find the ground state energy of a chemical system. In the previous study, many of the VQE calculations have been done on simple molecules. So, in this study, we would like to use Hydrazine molecule as our object of VQE calculation. Furthermore, these results will be compared with the results from the classical calculation (MP2, CCSD(T), QCISD(T), and CASSCF) methods for testing the effectiveness of VQE using Unitary Coupled-Cluster Single and Double excitations (UCCSD) Ansatz. The quantum algorithm based on the UCCSD Ansatz led to a simplification of the algorithm by reducing the circuit depth. Then, the possibility to use active space approximation, can be used to reduce the quantum gates while trying to keep a good level of accuracy. In this study, we chose (2,2) and (4,4) active spaces. Based on the results, as we increase the size of the active space during the evaluation of the single-point energy, the estimated ground states obtained from the VQE algorithm yield nearly identical values. Conversely, in CASSCF calculations, expanding the active space introduces more energy corrections, thus making it more sensitive. Additionally, when examining potential energy surfaces, VQE demonstrates results that gradually align with CCSD(T) and QCISD(T) methods.

Computational Analysis of Chemical Reactions Using a Variational Quantum Eigensolver Algorithm without Specifying Spin Multiplicity

Soichi Shirai, Hokuto Iwakiri, Keita Kanno +4 more

The analysis of a chemical reaction along the ground-state potential energy surface in conjunction with an unknown spin state is challenging because electronic states must be separately computed several times using different spin multiplicities to find the lowest energy state. However, in principle, the ground state could be obtained with just a single calculation using a quantum computer without specifying the spin multiplicity in advance. In the present work, ground-state potential energy curves for PtCO were calculated as a proof-of-concept using a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. This system exhibits a singlet-triplet crossover as a consequence of the interaction between Pt and CO. VQE calculations using a statevector simulator were found to converge to a singlet state in the bonding region, while a triplet state was obtained at the dissociation limit. Calculations performed using an actual quantum device provided potential energies within ±2 kcal/mol of the simulated energies after error mitigation techniques were adopted. The spin multiplicities in the bonding and dissociation regions could be clearly distinguished even in the case of a small number of shots. The results of this study suggest that quantum computing can be a powerful tool for the analysis of the chemical reactions of systems for which the spin multiplicity of the ground state and variations in this parameter are not known in advance.

Assessment of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) for bond dissociation of H$$_{2}$$, H$${_3^+}$$, and CH$$_{5}^{+}$$

Amanda Marques de Lima, Eivson Darlivam Rodrigues de Aguiar Silva, Erico S. Teixeira +1 more

Abstract Context The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is a quantum-classical algorithm for estimating molecular ground-state energies. However, the accuracy depends on the choice of ansatz , active space, and initial variational parameters. Hence, it is relevant to perform assessments of VQE. The dissociation profiles of H $$_2$$ 2 , H $$_3^+$$ 3 + , and CH $$_5^+$$ 5 + were chosen for these assessments. For H $$_2$$ 2 and H $$_3^+$$ 3 + , the UCCSD, GateFabric, and k -UpCCGSD ansätze reproduced the dissociation profiles with high accuracy. For CH $$_5^+$$ 5 + , GateFabric and k -UpCCGSD provided the best compromise between accuracy and scalability. Hardware-efficient ansätze (HEA), particularly HEA-A and HEA-B, produced significant deviations from the reference energies. The results also demonstrate that larger numbers of parameters or logic gates do not necessarily improve VQE performance. Furthermore, some ansätze , especially GRSD and EHA, showed sensitivity to the initialization of the parameters. Methods Reference geometries and energies were obtained at the CISD/STO-3 G level using Gaussian 09. VQE simulations were performed with the PennyLane library employing the Jordan-Wigner mapping. The ansätze evaluated were UCCSD, k -UpCCGSD, GateFabric, GRSD, HEA-A, HEA-B, HEA-C, and Entanglement-variational Hardware-efficient Ansatz (EHA). Dissociation profiles were generated by varying interatomic distances and angular coordinates for H $$_2$$ 2 and H $$_3^+$$ 3 + , as well as the C-H $$_2$$ 2 dissociation coordinate for CH $$_5^+$$ 5 + . Active-space ranging from 2/2 to 8/8 electrons/orbitals was employed for CH $$_5^+$$ 5 + . Variational parameters were optimized using stochastic gradient descent with a convergence threshold of $$1 \times 10^{-6}$$ 1 × 10

Recent Developments and Perspectives in Variational Quantum Eigensolvers for Molecular Electronic Structure: Methods, Tradeoffs, and Benchmarking

Taylor Harville, Rishu Khurana, Vitor F. Grizzi +1 more

The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm designed for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware to estimate eigenvalues of many-body Hamiltonians. Unlike fully quantum approaches such as quantum phase estimation (QPE), VQE trades deep coherent circuits for repeated state preparation, measurement, and classical optimization, making it more compatible with limited qubit counts and finite coherence times. Recent developments have focused on reducing quantum resource requirements while retaining chemically meaningful wavefunction structure. In this paper, we examine recent progress in VQE methods for molecular electronic structure with an emphasis on three themes: (i) strategies for circuit and ansatz complexity reduction, including adaptive and selectively screened approaches, (ii) chemically motivated workflows that combine VQE with orbital optimization, fragmentation, and localized active-space ideas to better address strong correlation, and (iii) extensions of VQE to excited-state calculations. Throughout, we emphasize the tradeoffs among parameter count, gate depth, symmetry preservation, measurement overhead, and classical preprocessing, and discuss where these approaches may become most useful for chemically challenging active spaces. We also highlight benchmarking considerations for assessing both accuracy and resource requirements, and conclude with a perspective on regimes in which VQE may offer the greatest long-term value, particularly multireference active spaces and low-lying excited-state manifolds.

Evaluating Variational Quantum Eigensolver Approaches for Simplified Models of Molecular Systems: A Case Study on Protocatechuic Acid

Gleydson Fernandes de Jesus, Erico S. Teixeira, Lucas Queiroz Galvão +6 more

The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) is a hybrid algorithm that combines quantum and classical computing to determine the ground-state energy of molecular systems. In this context, this study applies VQE to investigate the ground state of protocatechuic acid, analyzing its performance with various Ansatzes and active spaces. Subsequently, all VQE results were compared to those obtained with the CISD and FCI methods. The results demonstrate that Ansatzes, like Unitary Coupled Cluster Singles and Doubles (UCCSD) and variations of Hardware-Efficient Ansatzes, generally achieve accuracy close to that of FCI. In conclusion, this study highlights the effectiveness of VQE as a robust method for investigating molecular ground-state energies. Additionally, the findings emphasize the pivotal role of Ansatz design and active space selection in optimizing VQE performance, offering meaningful insights into its capabilities and constraints.
