Abstract

Abstract We initiate a study of local operator algebras at the boundary of infinite tensor networks, using the mathematical theory of inductive limits. In particular, we consider tensor networks in which each layer acts as a quantum code with complementary recovery, a property that features prominently in the bulk-to-boundary maps intrinsic to holographic quantum error-correcting codes. In this case, we decompose the limiting Hilbert space and the algebras of observables in a way that keeps track of the entanglement in the network. As a specific example, we describe this inductive limit for the holographic Harlow-Pastawski-Preskill-Yoshida code model and relate its algebraic and error-correction features. We find that the local algebras in this model are given by the hyperfinite type II ∞ factor. Next, we discuss other networks that build upon this framework and comment on a connection between type II factors and stabilizer circuits. We conclude with a discussion of multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz networks in which complementary recovery is broken. We argue that this breaking possibly permits a limiting type III von Neumann algebra, making them more suitable ansätze for approximating subregions of quantum field theories.

Entanglement wedge reconstruction of infinite-dimensional von Neumann algebras using tensor networks

Monica Jinwoo Kang, David K. Kolchmeyer

Quantum error correcting codes with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces have yielded new insights on bulk reconstruction in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we give an explicit construction of a quantum error correcting code where the code and physical Hilbert spaces are infinite-dimensional. We define a von Neumann algebra of type ${\mathrm{II}}_{1}$ acting on the code Hilbert space and show how it is mapped to a von Neumann algebra of type ${\mathrm{II}}_{1}$ acting on the physical Hilbert space. This toy model demonstrates the equivalence of entanglement wedge reconstruction and the exact equality of bulk and boundary relative entropies in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

The holographic map as a conditional expectation

Thomas Faulkner

We study the holographic map in AdS/CFT, as modeled by a quantum error correcting code with exact complementary recovery. We show that the map is determined by local conditional expectations acting on the operator algebras of the boundary/physical Hilbert space. Several existing results in the literature follow easily from this perspective. The Black Hole area law, and more generally the Ryu-Takayanagi area operator, arises from a central sum of entropies on the relative commutant. These entropies are determined in a state independent way by the conditional expectation. The conditional expectation can also be found via a minimization procedure, similar to the minimization involved in the RT formula. For a local net of algebras associated to connected boundary regions, we show the complementary recovery condition is equivalent to the existence of a standard net of inclusions -- an abstraction of the mathematical structure governing QFT superselection sectors given by Longo and Rehren. For a code consisting of algebras associated to two disjoint regions of the boundary theory we impose an extra condition, dubbed dual-additivity, that gives rise to phase transitions between different entanglement wedges. Dual-additive codes naturally give rise to a new split code subspace, and an entropy bound controls which subspace and associated algebra is reconstructable. We also discuss known shortcomings of exact complementary recovery as a model of holography. For example, these codes are not able to accommodate holographic violations of additive for overlapping regions. We comment on how approximate codes can fix these issues.

Asymptotically isometric codes for holography

Thomas Faulkner, Min Li

The holographic principle suggests that the low energy effective field theory of gravity, as used to describe perturbative quantum fields about some background has far too many states. It is then natural that any quantum error correcting code with such a quantum field theory as the code subspace is not isometric. We discuss how this framework can naturally arise in an algebraic QFT treatment of a family of CFT with a large-$N$ limit described by the single trace sector. We show that an isometric code can be recovered in the $N \rightarrow \infty$ limit when acting on fixed states in the code Hilbert space. Asymptotically isometric codes come equipped with the notion of simple operators and nets of causal wedges. While the causal wedges are additive, they need not satisfy Haag duality, thus leading to the possibility of non-trivial entanglement wedge reconstructions. Codes with complementary recovery are defined as having extensions to Haag dual nets, where entanglement wedges are well defined for all causal boundary regions. We prove an asymptotic version of the information disturbance trade-off theorem and use this to show that boundary theory causality is maintained by net extensions. We give a characterization of the existence of an entanglement wedge extension via the asymptotic equality of bulk and boundary relative entropy or modular flow. While these codes are asymptotically exact, at fixed $N$ they can have large errors on states that do not survive the large-$N$ limit. This allows us to fix well known issues that arise when modeling gravity as an exact codes, while maintaining the nice features expected of gravity, including, among other things, the emergence of non-trivial von Neumann algebras of various types.

Shrinking of operators in quantum error correction and AdS/CFT

Hayato Hirai

Abstract We first show that a class of operators acting on a given bipartite pure state on ℋ A ⊗ ℋ B can shrink its supports on ℋ A ⊗ ℋ B to only ℋ A or ℋ B while keeping its mappings. Using this result, we show how to systematically construct the decoders of the quantum error-correcting codes against erasure errors. The implications of the results for the operator dictionary in the AdS/CFT correspondence are also discussed. The “sub- algebra code with complementary recovery” introduced in the recent work of Harlow is a quantum error-correcting code that shares many common features with the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider it under the restriction of the bulk (logical) Hilbert space to a subspace that generally has no tensor factorization into subsystems. In this code, the central operators of the reconstructed algebra on the boundary subregion can emerge as a consequence of the restriction of the bulk Hilbert space. Finally, we show a theorem in this code which implies the validity of not only the entanglement wedge reconstruction but also its converse statement with the central operators.

Holographic codes from hyperinvariant tensor networks

Matthew Steinberg, Sebastian Feld, A. Jahn

Holographic quantum-error correcting codes are models of bulk/boundary dualities such as the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, where a higher-dimensional bulk geometry is associated with the code's logical degrees of freedom. Previous discrete holographic codes based on tensor networks have reproduced the general code properties expected from continuum AdS/CFT, such as complementary recovery. However, the boundary states of such tensor networks typically do not exhibit the expected correlation functions of CFT boundary states. In this work, we show that a new class of exact holographic codes, extending the previously proposed hyperinvariant tensor networks into quantum codes, produce the correct boundary correlation functions. This approach yields a dictionary between logical states in the bulk and the critical renormalization group flow of boundary states. Furthermore, these codes exhibit a state-dependent breakdown of complementary recovery as expected from AdS/CFT under small quantum gravity corrections.
