Abstract

Global symmetries can be generalised to transformations generated by topological operators, including cases in which the topological operator does not have an inverse. A family of such topological operators are intimately related to dualities via the procedure of half-space gauging. In this work we discuss the construction of non-invertible defects based on T-duality in two dimensions, generalising the well-known case of the free compact boson to any Non-Linear Sigma Model with Wess-Zumino term which is T-dualisable. This requires that the target space has an isometry with compact orbits that acts without fixed points. Our approach allows us to include target spaces without non-trivial 1-cycles, does not require the NLSM to be conformal, and when it is conformal it does not need to be rational; moreover, it highlights the microscopic origin of the topological terms that are responsible for the non-invertibility of the defect. An interesting class of examples are Wess-Zumino-Witten models, which are self-dual under a discrete gauging of a subgroup of the isometry symmetry and so host a topological defect line with Tambara-Yamagami fusion. Along the way, we discuss how the usual 0-form symmetries match across T-dual models in target spaces without 1-cycles, and how global obstructions can prevent locally conserved currents from giving rise to topological operators.

Non-invertible T-duality at any radius via non-compact SymTFT

Riccardo Argurio, Andrés Collinucci, Giovanni Galati +2 more

We extend the construction of the T-duality symmetry for the 2d compact boson to arbitrary values of the radius by including topological manipulations such as gauging continuous symmetries with flat connections. We show that the entire circle branch of the c=1 c = 1 conformal manifold can be generated using these manipulations, resulting in a non-invertible T-duality symmetry when the gauging sends the radius to its inverse value. Using the recently proposed symmetry TFT describing continuous global symmetries of the boundary theory, we identify the topological operator corresponding to these new T-duality symmetries as an open condensation defect of the bulk theory, constructed by (higher) gauging an \mathbb{R} ℝ subgroup of the bulk global symmetries. Notably, when the boundary theory is the compact boson with a rational square radius, this operator reduces to the familiar T-duality defect described by a Tambara-Yamagami fusion category. This construction thus naturally includes all possible discrete T-duality symmetries of the theory in a unified way.

Dual topological nonlinear sigma models of $\text{QED}$ theory by dimensional reduction and monopole operators

Wu, Zhengzhi, Linhao Li

Nonlinear $σ$ models (NLSM) with topological terms, i.e., Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) terms, or topological NLSM, are potent descriptions of many critical points and phases beyond the Landau paradigm. These critical systems include the deconfined quantum critical points (DQCP) between the Neel order and valance bond solid, and the Dirac spin liquid, in which the topological NLSMs are dual descriptions of the corresponding fermionic models or $\text{QED}$ theory. In this paper, we propose a dimensional reduction scheme to derive the $\text{U}(1)$ gauged topological NLSM in $n$-dimensional spacetime on a general target space represented by a Hermitian matrix from the dual QED theory. Compared with the famous Abanov-Wiegmann (AW) mechanism, which generally requires the fermions to be Dirac fermions in the infrared (IR), our method is also applicable to non-relativistic fermions in IR, which can have quadratic dispersion or even a Fermi surface. As concrete examples, we construct several two dimensional lattice models, whose IR theories are all the $N_f=4$ $\text{QED}_3$ with fermions of quadratic dispersion and show that its topological NLSM dual description has level-2 WZW terms on the Grassmannian manifold $\frac{\text{U(4)}}{\text{U(2)}\times \text{U(2)}}$ coupled with a dynamical $\text{U(1)}$ gauge field. We also study 't Hooft anomaly matching and the same effect of defects in both theories, such as interface, gauge monopoles and skyrmions, which further support our duality. Finally, we discuss how the macroscopic symmetries act on the $\text{U(1)}$ monopole operators and the corresponding quantum number.

Non-local conserved currents and continuous non-invertible symmetries

Diego Delmastro, Adar Sharon, Yunqin Zheng

A bstract We embark on a systematic study of continuous non-invertible symmetries, focusing on 1+1d CFTs. We describe a generalized version of Noether’s theorem, where continuous non-invertible symmetries are associated to non-local conserved currents: point-like operators attached to extended topological defects. The generalized Noether’s theorem unifies several constructions of continuous non-invertible symmetries in the literature, and allows us to exhibit many more examples in diverse theories of interest. We first review known examples which are non-intrinsic (i.e., invertible up to gauging), and then describe new examples in Wess-Zumino-Witten models and products of minimal models. For some of these new examples, we show that these continuous non-invertible symmetries are intrinsic if we demand that a certain global symmetry is preserved. The continuous non-invertible symmetries in products of minimal models also allow us to construct new examples of defect conformal manifolds in a single copy of a minimal model. Finally, we comment on continuous non-invertible symmetries in higher dimensions.

Self-duality under gauging a non-invertible symmetry

Yichul Choi, Da-Chuan Lu, Zhengdi Sun

A bstract We discuss two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) which are invariant under gauging a non-invertible global symmetry. At every point on the orbifold branch of c = 1 CFTs, it is known that the theory is self-dual under gauging a ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 symmetry, and has Rep( H 8 ) and Rep( D 8 ) fusion category symmetries as a result. We find that gauging the entire Rep( H 8 ) fusion category symmetry maps the orbifold theory at radius R to that at radius 2/ R . At R = $$ \sqrt{2} $$ 2 , which corresponds to two decoupled Ising CFTs (Ising 2 in short), the theory is self-dual under gauging the Rep( H 8 ) symmetry. This implies the existence of a topological defect line in the Ising 2 CFT obtained from half-space gauging of the Rep( H 8 ) symmetry, which commutes with the c = 1 Virasoro algebra but does not preserve the fully extended chiral algebra. We bootstrap its action on the c = 1 Virasoro primary operators, and find that there are no relevant or marginal operators preserving it. Mathematically, the new topological line combines with the Rep( H 8 ) symmetry to form a bigger fusion category which is a ℤ 2 -extension of Rep( H 8 ). We solve the pentagon equations including the additional topological line and find 8 solutions, where two of them are realized in the Ising 2 CFT. Finally, we show that the torus partition functions of the Monster 2 CFT and Ising × Monster CFT are also invariant under gauging the Rep( H 8 ) symmetry.

Algebraic Fusion in a (2+1)-dimensional Lattice Model with Generalized Symmetries

Chinmay Giridhar, Philipp Vojta, Zohar Nussinov +2 more

The notion of quantum symmetry has recently been extended to include reduced-dimensional transformations and algebraic structures beyond groups. Such generalized symmetries lead to exotic phases of matter and excitations that defy Landau's original paradigm. Here, we develop an algebraic framework for systematically deriving the fusion rules of topological defects in higher-dimensional lattice systems with non-invertible generalized symmetries, and focus on a (2+1)-dimensional quantum Ising plaquette model as a concrete illustration. We show that bond-algebraic automorphisms, when combined with the so-called half-gauging procedure, reveal the structure of the non-invertible duality symmetry operators, which can be explicitly represented as a sequential quantum circuit. The resulting duality defects are constrained by the model's rigid higher symmetries (lower-dimensional subsystem symmetries), leading to restricted mobility. We establish the fusion algebra of these defects. Finally, in constructing the non-invertible duality transformation, we explicitly verify that it acts as a partial isometry on the physical Hilbert space, thereby satisfying a recent generalization of Wigner's theorem applicable to non-invertible symmetries.

Subsystem non-invertible symmetry operators and defects

Weiguang Cao, Linhao Li, Masahito Yamazaki +1 more

We explore non-invertible symmetries in two-dimensional lattice models with subsystem \mathbb Z_2 ℤ 2 symmetry. We introduce a subsystem \mathbb Z_2 ℤ 2 -gauging procedure, called the subsystem Kramers-Wannier transformation, which generalizes the ordinary Kramers-Wannier transformation. The corresponding duality operators and defects are constructed by gaugings on the whole or half of the Hilbert space. By gauging twice, we derive fusion rules of duality operators and defects, which enriches ordinary Ising fusion rules with subsystem features. Subsystem Kramers-Wannier duality defects are mobile in both spatial directions, unlike the defects of invertible subsystem symmetries. We finally comment on the anomaly of the subsystem Kramers-Wannier duality symmetry, and discuss its subtleties.
