Abstract

We study the boundary criticality for the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) models. Employing interacting Dirac fermions on a honeycomb lattice with armchair boundaries, we use determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulation to uncover rich boundary criticalities at the quantum phase transition to a charge density wave (CDW) insulator, including the ordinary, special, and extraordinary transitions. The Dirac fermions satisfy a Dirichlet boundary condition, while the boson field, representing the CDW order, obeys Dirichlet and Neumann conditions at the ordinary and special transitions, respectively, thereby enriching the critical GNY model. We develop a perturbative 4-ε renormalization group approach to compute the boundary critical exponents. Our framework generalizes to other GNY universality class variants and provides theoretical predictions for experiments.

Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model at three loops and Ising critical behavior of Dirac systems

Luminita N. Mihaila, Nikolai Zerf, Bernhard Ihrig +2 more

Dirac and Weyl fermions appear as quasiparticle excitations in many different condensed-matter systems. They display various quantum transitions which represent unconventional universality classes related to the variants of the Gross-Neveu model. In this paper we study the bosonized version of the standard Gross-Neveu model---the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory---at three-loop order, and compute critical exponents in $4\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ dimensions for a general number of fermion flavors. Our results fully encompass the previously known two-loop calculations, and agree with the known three-loop results in the purely bosonic limit of the theory. We also find the exponents to satisfy the emergent superscaling relations in the limit of a single-component fermion, order by order up to three loops. Finally, we apply the computed series for the exponents and their Pad\'e approximants to several phase transitions of current interest: metal-insulator transitions of spin-1/2 and spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice, emergent supersymmetric surface field theory in topological phases, as well as the disorder-induced quantum transition in Weyl semimetals. Comparison with the results of other analytical and numerical methods is discussed.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of critical exponents of the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa on a two-dimensional fermion lattice model

Ting-Tung Wang, Zi Yang Meng

It is expected that the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) chiral Ising transition of Dirac fermions coupled with a scalar field in $(2+1)$ dimensions will be the first fermionic quantum critical point that various methods, such as conformal bootstrap, perturbative renormalization group, and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, would yield converged critical exponents---serving the same role as the Ising and $O(N)$ models in the textbooks of statistical and quantum physics. However, such an expectation has not been fully realized from the lattice QMC simulations due to the obstacles introduced by the UV finite-size effect. In this Letter, by means of the elective-momentum ultrasize (EMUS)-QMC method, we compute the critical exponents of the $O{(N/2)}^{2}\ensuremath{\rtimes}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ GNY $N=8$ chiral Ising transition on a two-dimensional $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux fermion lattice model between Dirac semimetal and quantum spin Hall insulator phases. With the matching of fermionic and bosonic momentum transfer and collective update in momentum space, our QMC results provide fully consistent exponents with those obtained from the bootstrap and perturbative approaches. In this way, the EMUS now live happily on the $N=8$ island and could explore the chiral Gross-Neveu-Yukawa archipelago with ease.

Wilson-Fisher fixed points in the presence of Dirac fermions

Igor F. Herbut

Wilson–Fisher expansion near upper critical dimension has proven to be an invaluable conceptual and computational tool in our understanding of the universal critical behavior in the [Formula: see text] field theories that describe low-energy physics of the canonical models, such as Ising, XY, and Heisenberg. Here, I review its application to a class of the Gross–Neveu–Yukawa (GNY) field theories, which emerge as possible universal description of a number of quantum phase transitions in electronic two-dimensional systems such as graphene and d-wave superconductors. GNY field theories may be viewed as minimal modifications of the [Formula: see text] field theories in which the order parameter is coupled to relativistic Dirac fermions through Yukawa term and which still exhibit critical fixed points in the suitably formulated Wilson–Fisher [Formula: see text]-expansion. I discuss the unified GNY field theory for a set of different symmetry-breaking patterns, with focus on the semimetal-Néel-ordered-Mott insulator quantum phase transition in the half-filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice, for which a comparison between the state-of-the-art [Formula: see text]-expansion, quantum Monte Carlo, large N, and functional renormalization-group calculations can be made.

Fermionic criticality with enlarged fluctuations in Dirac semimetals

Jiang Zhou, Su-Peng Kou

The fluctuations-driven continuous quantum criticality has sparked tremendous interest in condensed matter physics. It has been verified that the gapless fermions fluctuations can change the nature of phase transition at criticality. In this paper, we study the fermionic quantum criticality with enlarged Ising$\times$Ising fluctuations in honeycomb lattice materials. The Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory for the multicriticality between the semimetallic phase and two ordered phases that break Ising symmetry is investigated by employing perturbative renormalization group approach. We first determine the critical range in which the quantum fluctuations may render the phase transition continuous. We find that the Ising criticality is continuous only when the flavor numbers of four-component Dirac fermions $N_f\geq1/4$. Using the $ε$ expansion in four space-time dimensions, we then study the Ising$\times$Ising multicriticality stemming from the symmetry-breaking electronic instabilities. We analyze the underlying fixed-point structure and compute the critical exponents for the Ising$\times$Ising Gross-Neveu-Yukawa universality class. Further, the correlation scaling behavior for the fermion bilinear on the honeycomb lattice at the multicritical point are also briefly discussed.

Random-mass disorder in the critical Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models

Hennadii Yerzhakov, Joseph Maciejko

An important yet largely unsolved problem in the statistical mechanics of disordered quantum systems is to understand how quenched disorder affects quantum phase transitions in systems of itinerant fermions. In the clean limit, continuous quantum phase transitions of the symmetry-breaking type in Dirac materials such as graphene and the surfaces of topological insulators are described by relativistic (2+1)-dimensional quantum field theories of the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) type. We study the universal critical properties of the chiral Ising, XY, and Heisenberg GNY models perturbed by quenched random-mass disorder, both uncorrelated or with long-range power-law correlations. Using the replica method combined with a controlled triple epsilon expansion below four dimensions, we find a variety of new finite-randomness critical and multicritical points with nonzero Yukawa coupling between low-energy Dirac fields and bosonic order parameter fluctuations, and compute their universal critical exponents. Analyzing bifurcations of the renormalization-group flow, we find instances of the fixed-point annihilation scenario—continuously tuned by the power-law exponent of long-range disorder correlations and associated with an exponentially large crossover length—as well as the transcritical bifurcation and the supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The latter is accompanied by the birth of a stable limit cycle on the critical hypersurface, which represents the first instance of fermionic quantum criticality with emergent discrete scale invariance.

Trion states and quantum criticality of attractive SU(3) Dirac fermions

Han Xu, Xiang Li, Zhichao Zhou +4 more

We perform the projector quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation to study the trion formation and quantum phase transition in the half filled attractive SU(3) Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. With increasing attractive Hubbard interaction, our simulations demonstrate a continuous quantum phase transition from the semimetal to charge-density wave (CDW) at the critical coupling ${U}_{c}/t=\ensuremath{-}1.52(2)$. The critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.82(3)$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}=0.58(4)$ determined by the QMC simulation remarkably disagree with those of the $N=3$ chiral Ising universality class suggested by the effective Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) theory, but coincide with the $N=1$ chiral Ising universality class. In the CDW phase, we show that on-site and off-site trions coexist and the off-site trion forms a local bond state. Our work not only illustrates the formation of off-site trions in two-dimensional Hubbard model but also raises doubts about the extent of applicability of GNY model on attractive SU(3) Dirac fermions.
