Role of Matter Interactions in Superradiant Phenomena

Abstract

The superradiant phenomenon, usually described by the Dicke model, is a hallmark of strong light-matter interaction. We explore how matter-matter interactions influence this phenomenon by performing ground-state simulations of Dicke-like models with both isotropic and anisotropic interactions. We find that Ising-type interactions produce two qualitatively distinct phase boundaries, one of which gives rise to an antiferromagnetic-normal phase connected to the superradiant regime via a first-order phase transition. Under anisotropic couplings, we uncover a strongly correlated phase where in-plane spin order coexists with superradiance, exhibiting sublinear scaling of the photon occupation per site and power-law decay of spin correlations. Furthermore, superradiance is strengthened by tuning either isotropic or anisotropic interactions, highlighting the role of intrinsic many-body correlations in shaping light-matter quantum phases.

Quantum phase diagrams of Dicke-Ising models by a wormhole algorithm

Anja Langheld, Max Hörmann, Kai Phillip Schmidt

We gain quantitative insights on effects of light-matter interactions on correlated quantum matter by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We introduce a wormhole algorithm for the paradigmatic Dicke-Ising model which combines the light-matter interaction of the Dicke model with Ising interactions. The quantum phase diagrams for ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions on the chain and the square lattice are determined. The occurring superradiant phase transitions are in the same universality class as the Dicke model, leading to a well-known peculiar finite-size scaling that we elucidate in terms of scaling above the upper critical dimension. For the ferromagnetic case, the transition between the normal and the superradiant phase is of second order with Dicke criticality (first order) for large (small) longitudinal fields separated by a multicritical point. For antiferromagnetic interactions, we establish the light-matter analog of a lattice supersolid with off-diagonal superradiant and diagonal magnetic order and determine the nature of all transition lines. Our achievements allow to quantitatively enter the domain of mesoscopic light-matter systems, which is an increasingly prominent topic at the interface of quantum optics and condensed matter physics.

Modulation-based superradiant phase transition in the strong-coupling regime

Jin‐Feng Huang, Lin Tian

The Dicke model can exhibit quantum phase transition between the normal and the superradiant phases when the strength of the light-matter coupling exceeds the ultrastrong-coupling regime. However, it is challenging to observe this phase transition in practical systems due to limited coupling strength or finite two-photon ${A}^{2}$ terms. Here we show that by applying a periodic modulation to the frequency of the two-level systems in a standard Dicke model in the strong-coupling regime, an anisotropic Dicke model with tunable rotating and counter-rotating terms in the ultrastrong-coupling regime can be achieved. We calculate the ground state and the excitation spectrum of this model in terms of the modulation parameters. Our result shows that the superradiant phases can be observed in cavity- or circuit-quantum electrodynamics systems with strong coupling.

Two-atom Dicke model with atom-atom interaction

Lin Jiao, Han Pu

Interactions among emitters provide a powerful means of controlling collective light--matter phenomena, yet their role in superradiant criticality has not been thoroughly investigated. Here we construct a minimal model that can yield analytical insights --- a Dicke model with two interacting atoms coupled to a single mode cavity --- to study such interaction effects. We show that interaction changes the phase boundary, and may even completely suppress the atom-photon coupling threshold for superradiance and change the universality class of the phase transition. We further study the dissipative phase transition and quantum dynamics in the presence of dissipation channels such as photon loss and spin relaxation. Our results demonstrate important roles played by the atom-atom interaction and how it can be engineered to control atom-photon coupling.

Comment on "Role of Matter Interactions in Superradiant Phenomena"

Max Hörmann, Anja Langheld, Jonas Leibig +2 more

Recently, Mendonça et al. [arXiv:2503.04961] investigated the Dicke-XXZ model and the Dicke-Ising model. For the latter model, their calculated quantum phase diagram contradicts claims about the existence of an intermediate phase with superradiant and antiferromagnetic order and the change in order of some phase transition lines, observed in other studies. In this comment we demonstrate that both features are indeed present in the Dicke-Ising model for the investigated parameter range in [arXiv:2503.04961].

Universal fluctuations and squeezing in a generalized Dicke model near the superradiant phase transition

D. S. Shapiro, W. V. Pogosov, Yu. E. Lozovik

In view of recent proposals for the realization of anisotropic light-matter interaction in such platforms as (i) nonstationary or inductively and capacitively coupled superconducting qubits, (ii) atoms in crossed fields, and (iii) semiconductor heterostructures with spin-orbital interaction, the concept of a generalized Dicke model, where coupling strengths of rotating wave and counter-rotating wave terms are unequal, has attracted great interest. For this model we study photon fluctuations in the critical region of normal-to-superradiant phase transition when both the temperatures and numbers of two-level systems are finite. In this case, the superradiant quantum phase transition is changed to a fluctuational region in the phase diagram that reveals two types of critical behaviors. These are regimes of Dicke model (with discrete ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry), and that of anti-Tavis-Cummings and Tavis-Cummings $U(1)$ models. We show that squeezing parameters of photon condensate in these regimes show distinct temperature scalings. Besides, relative fluctuations of a photon number take universal values. We also find a temperature scale below which one approaches a zero-temperature quantum phase transition where quantum fluctuations dominate. Our effective theory is provided by a non-Goldstone functional for condensate mode and by Majorana representation of Pauli operators. We also discuss the Bethe ansatz solution for integrable $U(1)$ limits.

Superradiant switching, quantum hysteresis, and oscillations in a generalized Dicke model

Kevin C. Stitely, Stuart J. Masson, Andrus Giraldo +2 more

We demonstrate quantum signatures of deterministic nonlinear dynamics in the transition to superradiance of a generalized open Dicke model with different coupling strengths for the co- and counterrotating light-matter interaction terms. A first-order phase transition to coexisting normal and superradiant phases is observed, corresponding with the emergence of switching dynamics between these two phases, driven by quantum fluctuations. We show that this phase coexistence gives rise to a hysteresis loop also for the quantum mechanical system. Additionally, a transition to a superradiant oscillatory phase is observed clearly in quantum simulations.
