Abstract

These comments contain two primary improvements to the aforementioned article: Where previously mentioned in passing in section 3.4 of our article, we now provide, using the same basic steps as in Bennink's paper, [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053805 (2010)] (with some expanded discussion), a full derivation for the absolute generation rate of photon pairs from Spontaneous-Parametric Down-Conversion (SPDC) when using a focused gaussian pump beam as input, and collecting the output biphotons in a pair of focused gaussian collection modes. We do this to both show consistency between our formalism and his treatment, and to be able to use it to predict the absolute brightness of photon pair generation in these sources. In doing so, our formula differs from that in [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053805 (2010)] by only a constant factor based on the ratio of products of indices of refraction. Second, we correct an abuse of notation in our main work in which the quantization dimensions of the cavity modes of the electromagnetic field are conflated with the dimensions of the nonlinear medium. While this does not meaningfully affect the final formulas we obtain for the generation rates in the paper (adding a dimensionless correction factor of order unity), we use the gaussian-mode SPDC derivation here to show how the factors of the quantization dimensions disappear when converting from a discrete-momentum basis of rectangular cavity modes to a continuous frequency basis of gaussian spatial modes. In doing this, we find that applying this correction factor to our previous theoretical predictions for the photon pair generation rates brings them closer to the obtained experimental values.

Introduction to the absolute brightness and number statistics in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

James Schneeloch, Samuel H. Knarr, Daniela F. Bogorin +6 more

Abstract As a tutorial, we examine the absolute brightness and number statistics of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) from first principles. In doing so, we demonstrate how the diverse implementations of SPDC can be understood through a single common framework, and use this to derive straightforward formulas for the biphoton generation rate (pairs per second) in a variety of different circumstances. In particular, we consider the common cases of both collimated and focused Gaussian pump beams in a bulk nonlinear crystal, as well as in nonlinear waveguides and micro-ring resonators. Furthermore, we examine the number statistics of down-converted light using a non-perturbative approximation (the multi-mode squeezed vacuum), to provide quantitative formulas for the relative likelihood of multi-pair production events, and explore how the quantum state of the pump affects the subsequent statistics of the down-converted light. Following this, we consider the limits of the undepleted pump approximation, and conclude by performing experiments to test the effectiveness of our theoretical predictions for the biphoton generation rate in a variety of different sources.

Maximizing the validity of the Gaussian approximation for the biphoton state from parametric down-conversion

Baghdasar Baghdasaryan, Fabian Steinlechner, S. Fritzsche

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is widely used in quantum applications based on photonic entanglement. The efficiency of photon pair generation is often characterized by means of a $\mathrm{sinc}(L\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}k/2)$ function, where $L$ is the length of the nonlinear medium and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}k$ is the phase mismatch between the pump and down-converted fields. In theoretical investigations, the $\mathrm{sinc}$ behavior of the phase mismatch has often been approximated by a Gaussian function $exp(\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}{x}^{2})$ in order to derive analytical expressions for the SPDC process. Different values have been chosen in the literature for the optimization factor $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, for instance, by comparing the widths of $\mathrm{sinc}$ and Gaussian functions or the momentum of down-converted photons. As a consequence, different values of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ provide different theoretical predictions for the same setup. Therefore an informed and unique choice of this parameter is necessary. In this paper, we present a choice of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ which maximizes the validity of the Gaussian approximation. Moreover, we also discuss the so-called super-Gaussian and cosine-Gaussian approximations as practical alternatives with improved predictive power for experiments.

Optimal collinear Gaussian beams for spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Ryan S. Bennink

I investigate the properties of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) involving collinear Gaussian spatial modes for the pump and the photon collection optics. Approximate analytical and numerical results are obtained for the peak spectral density, photon bandwidth, pair collection probability, heralding ratio, and spectral purity as a function of crystal length and beam-focusing parameters. I address the optimization of these properties individually as well as jointly, and find focusing conditions that simultaneously bring the pair collection probability, heralding ratio, and spectral purity to near-optimal values. These properties are also found to be nearly scale invariant, that is, ultimately independent of crystal length. The results obtained here are expected to be useful for designing SPDC sources with high performance in multiple categories for the next generation of SPDC applications.

Optimizing the coupling efficiency of spontaneous parametric down-conversion photon pairs into single-mode fibers

Nicolas Schwaller, Geobae Park, Ryo Okamoto +1 more

Both correlated-mode coupling efficiency and photon pair flux (brightness) of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) coupled into single-mode fibers are key parameters for various quantum information science applications. We present an experimental investigation on the optimization of the correlated-mode coupling efficiency and the brightness of frequency-degenerated SPDC photon pairs into single-mode optical fibers. Using photon pairs generated from a type-I phase-matched bulk $\ensuremath{\beta}$-barium borate crystal pumped by a continuous-wave laser, we carefully evaluated both the correlated-mode coupling efficiency and the brightness of SPDC light coupled to a single-mode optical fiber, while continuously changing the focusing of the pump and collection modes, experimenting with Rayleigh lengths from 3 to 280 (for the pump) and 0.2 to 20 (for the collection) times the crystal length. The measured data suggest that the correlated-mode coupling efficiency can be close to unity for any pump focus, however, the optimal Rayleigh length of the collection mode depends on the pump focus parameter, and the brightness can be increased by tightening the pump focus, provided that the Rayleigh length of the collection mode is precisely adjusted. A maximal correlated-mode coupling efficiency of $99.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3%$ was experimentally achieved. These results will be useful for photonic quantum science and technology using SPDC sources with high heralding efficiencies.

Design of bright, fiber-coupled and fully factorable photon pair sources

Luis Edgar Vicent, Alfred B. U’Ren, Radhika Rangarajan +4 more

From quantum computation to quantum key distribution, many quantum-enhanced applications rely on the ability to generate pure single photons. Even though the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) is widely used as the basis for photon-pair sources, the conditions for pure heralded single-photon generation, taking into account both spectral and spatial degrees of freedom, have not been fully described. We present an analysis of the spatio-temporal correlations present in photon pairs produced by type-I, non-collinear SPDC. We derive a set of conditions for full factorability in all degrees of freedom—required for the heralding of pure single photons—between the signal and idler modes. In this paper, we consider several possible approaches for the design of bright, fiber-coupled and factorable photon-pair sources. We show through numerical simulations of the exact equations that sources based on: (i) the suppression of spatio-temporal entanglement according to our derived conditions and (ii) a tightly focused pump beam together with optimized fiber-collection modes and spectral filtering of the signal and idler photon pairs, lead to a source brightness of the same order of magnitude. Likewise, we find that both of these sources lead to a drastically higher factorable photon-pair flux, compared to an unengineered source.

Parametric down-conversion from a wave-equation approach: Geometry and absolute brightness

Morgan W. Mitchell

Using the approach of coupled wave equations, we consider spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) in the narrow-band regime and its relationship to classical nonlinear processes such as sum-frequency generation. We find simple expressions in terms of mode-overlap integrals for the absolute pair-production rate into single-spatial modes and simple relationships between the efficiencies of the classical and quantum processes. The results, obtained with Green function techniques, are not specific to any geometry or nonlinear crystal. The theory is applied to both degenerate and nondegenerate SPDC. We also find a time-domain expression for the correlation function between filtered signal and idler fields.
