Abstract

Haldane's fractional exclusion statistics (FES) describes a generalized Pauli exclusion statistics, which can be regarded as an emergent quantum statistics induced by the intrinsic dynamical interaction. A non-mutual FES has been identified at the quantum criticality of the one-dimensional (1D) and 2D interacting Bose Gas [Nat. Sci. Rev. 9, nwac027 (2022)]. It is naturally asked if such a non-mutual FES can be induced by the spin-spin interaction in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXX chain? In this article, we first represent the Bethe ansatz equations of spin strings in terms of the FES equations of different species. Then we show that the 1D spin XXX chain remarkably possesses the non-mutual FES in the critical region. We observe that the equation of state in terms of the FES gives rises to full statistical properties of the model at quantum criticality, which are in good agreement with the results obtained from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations of the model. From the non-mutual FES, we also precisely determine the quantum scaling functions, which further agree well with the previous TBA results [Phys. Rev. B 96, 220401(R) (2017)]. Finally, we also build up an exact mapping between the scaling functions of the Lieb-Liniger model and the spin Heisenberg spin chain at quantum criticality. Our method provides deep insights into the critical phase of matter from quantum FES point of view.

Interaction-induced particle-hole symmetry breaking and fractional exclusion statistics

Xibo Zhang, Yang-Yang Chen, Longxiang Liu +2 more

Quantum statistics plays a fundamental role in the laws of nature. Haldane fractional exclusion statistics (FES) generalizes the Pauli exclusion statistics, and can emerge in the properties of elementary particles and hole excitations of a quantum system consisting of conventional bosons or fermions. FES has a long history of intensive studies, but its simple realization in interacting physical systems is rare. Here we report a simple non-mutual FES that depicts the particle-hole symmetry breaking in interacting Bose gases at a quantum critical point. We show that the FES distribution directly comes from particle-hole symmetry breaking. Based on exact solutions, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and experiments, we find that, over a wide range of interaction strengths, the macroscopic physical properties of these gases are determined by non-interacting quasi-particles that obey non-mutual FES of the same form in one and two dimensions. Whereas strongly interacting Bose gases reach full fermionization in one dimension, they exhibit incomplete fermionization in two dimensions. Our results provide a generic connection between interaction-induced particle-hole symmetry breaking (depicted by FES) and macroscopic properties of many-body systems in arbitrary dimensions. Our work lays the groundwork for using FES to explore quantum criticality and other novel many-body phenomena in strongly correlated quantum systems.

An ansatz for the exclusion statistics parameters in macroscopic physical systems described by fractional exclusion statistics

Dragoş-Victor Anghel

I introduce an ansatz for the exclusion statistics parameters of fractional-exclusion-statistics (FES) systems and I apply it to calculate the statistical distribution of particles from both, bosonic and fermionic perspectives. To check the applicability of the ansatz, I calculate the FES parameters in three well-known models: a Fermi-liquid–type system, a one-dimensional quantum system described in the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and quasi-particle excitations in a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system. The FES parameters of the first two models satisfy the ansatz, whereas those of the third model, although close to the form given by the ansatz, represent an exception. In this case I also show that the general properties of the FES parameters, deduced elsewhere ( EPL , 87 (2009) 60009), are satisfied also by the parameters of the FQH liquid.

GENERALIZED STATISTICS IN SYSTEMS OF INTERACTING PARTICLES

Dragoş-Victor Anghel

After a very brief introduction to the concept of fractional exclusion statistics (FES), introduced by Haldane in Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 937 (1991), I shall present some recent results regarding the basic properties of this statistics. These properties have been overlooked for almost two decades and because of that, the application of FES to concrete physical systems was, to a certain degree, arbitrary. Essentially, the FES is a generalization of the Pauli Exclusion Principle which allows one to describe systems of interacting particles (bosons or fermions) as systems of ideal particles, but which obey a more peculiar type of statistics. In the second part of the paper I shall present some application of FES by analyzing concrete systems of interacting particles.

Fractional exclusion statistics and thermodynamics of the Hubbard chain in the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid regime

Carlindo Vitoriano, R. R. Montenegro-Filho, Mauricio D. Coutinho-Filho

Bethe ansatz and bosonization procedures are used to describe the thermodynamics of the strong-coupled Hubbard chain in the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid (LL) regime: $J(\ensuremath{\equiv}4{t}^{2}/U)\ensuremath{\ll}{k}_{B}T\ensuremath{\ll}{E}_{F}$, where $t$ is the hopping amplitude, $U(\ensuremath{\gg}t)$ is the repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction, and ${k}_{B}T({E}_{F}\ensuremath{\sim}t)$ is the thermal (Fermi) energy. We introduce a fractional Landau LL approach, whose $U=\ensuremath{\infty}$ fixed point is exactly mapped onto an ideal gas with two species obeying the Haldane-Wu exclusion fractional statistics. This phenomenological approach sheds light on the behavior of several thermodynamic properties in the spin-incoherent LL regime: specific heat, charge compressibility, magnetic susceptibility, and Drude weight. In fact, besides the hopping (mass) renormalization, the fractional Landau LL parameters, due to quasiparticle interaction, are determined and relationships with velocities of holons and spinons are unveiled. The specific heat thus obtained is in very good agreement with previous density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model in the spin-incoherent regime. A phase diagram is provided and two thermodynamic paths to access this regime clarifies both the numerical and analytical procedures. Further, we show that the high-$T$ limit of the fractional Landau LL entropy and chemical potential exhibit the expected results of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, under the condition $U\ensuremath{\gg}{k}_{B}T$. Lastly, finite-temperature Lanczos simulations of the single-particle distribution function confirm the characteristics of the spin-incoherent regime and the high-$T$ limit observed in previous DMRG studies.

The Thermodynamics and Fractional Statistics of the Spinor Bose Gas

Jolyon Bloomfield

We present a comprehensive analysis of the exact Bethe ansatz solution for the onedimensional spinor Bose gas. The Bethe ansatz equations and the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are derived, before investigating properties of these equations in limiting regimes. We explore the difference between spinless and spinor particles in the onedimensional Bose gas. For the spinor Bose gas, we present a new approximation to the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations which allows them to be solved in the strong coupling regime. We derive the first order correction to the solutions of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations in a low temperature regime, where spin effects are most evident. We then derive thermodynamic quantities for this model, adding a first order correction to the thermodynamics of the spinless system. ¶ The subject of fractional exclusion statistics is presented, and its significance with regards to the spinless Bose gas is discussed. We also discuss its significance with regards to the spinor Bose gas, and find a regime in which non-mutual statistics may be applied to the spinor Bose gas to obtain expansions of thermodynamic quantities. These expressions are seen to improve upon previous analytical results for the model.
