Multipartite entanglement structure of fibered link states

Abstract

We study the patterns of multipartite entanglement in Chern-Simons theory with compact simple gauge group G and level k for states defined by the path integral on “link complements,” i.e., compact manifolds whose boundaries consist of n topologically linked tori. We focus on link complements which can be described topologically as fibrations over a Seifert surface. We show that the entanglement structure of such fibered link complement states is controlled by a topological invariant, the monodromy of the fibration. Thus, the entanglement structure of a Chern-Simons link state is not simply a function of the link, but also of the background manifold in which the link is embedded. In particular, we show that any link possesses an embedding into some background that leads to Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state (GHZ)-like entanglement. Furthermore, we demonstrate that all fibered links with periodic monodromy have GHZ-like entanglement, i.e., a partial trace on any link component produces a separable state. These results generalize to any three dimensional topological field theory with a dual chiral rational conformal field theory.

Entanglement in typical states of Chern-Simons theory

Charlie Cummings

We compute various averages over bulk geometries of quantum states prepared by the Chern-Simons path integral, for any level k and compact simple gauge group G . We do so by carefully summing over all topologically distinct bulk geometries which have n disjoint boundary tori and a decomposition into space × time of fixed spatial topology. We find that to leading order in the complexity of the state, the typical state contains many types of multiparty entanglement, proving a conjecture of Balasubramanian Combined with the fact that periodic link states are Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ)-like, this result implies that a generic fibered link state contains non-GHZ entanglement if and only if its link complement is hyperbolic. Additionally, we compute an averaged wave function which captures the leading order statistics of boundary observables in the n torus Chern-Simons Hilbert space.

Multi-boundary entanglement in Chern-Simons theory and link invariants

Vijay Balasubramanian, Jackson R. Fliss, Robert G. Leigh +1 more

We consider Chern-Simons theory for gauge group G at level k on 3-manifolds M n with boundary consisting of n topologically linked tori. The Euclidean path integral on M n defines a quantum state on the boundary, in the n-fold tensor product of the torus Hilbert space. We focus on the case where M n is the link-complement of some n-component link inside the three-sphere S 3. The entanglement entropies of the resulting states define framing-independent link invariants which are sensitive to the topology of the chosen link. For the Abelian theory at level k (G = U(1) k ) we give a general formula for the entanglement entropy associated to an arbitrary (m|n − m) partition of a generic n-component link into sub-links. The formula involves the number of solutions to certain Diophantine equations with coefficients related to the Gauss linking numbers (mod k) between the two sublinks. This formula connects simple concepts in quantum information theory, knot theory, and number theory, and shows that entanglement entropy between sublinks vanishes if and only if they have zero Gauss linking (mod k). For G = SU(2) k , we study various two and three component links. We show that the 2-component Hopf link is maximally entangled, and hence analogous to a Bell pair, and that the Whitehead link, which has zero Gauss linking, nevertheless has entanglement entropy. Finally, we show that the Borromean rings have a “W-like” entanglement structure (i.e., tracing out one torus does not lead to a separable state), and give examples of other 3-component links which have “GHZ-like” entanglement (i.e., tracing out one torus does lead to a separable state).

Entanglement entropy and the colored Jones polynomial

Vijay Balasubramanian, Matthew P. DeCross, Jackson R. Fliss +3 more

Abstract We study the multi-party entanglement structure of states in Chern-Simons theory created by performing the path integral on 3-manifolds with linked torus boundaries, called link complements. For gauge group SU(2), the wavefunctions of these states (in a particular basis) are the colored Jones polynomials of the corresponding links. We first review the case of U(1) Chern-Simons theory where these are stabilizer states, a fact we use to re-derive an explicit formula for the entanglement entropy across a general link bipartition. We then present the following results for SU(2) Chern-Simons theory: (i) The entanglement entropy for a bipartition of a link gives a lower bound on the genus of surfaces in the ambient S 3 separating the two sublinks. (ii) All torus links (namely, links which can be drawn on the surface of a torus) have a GHZ-like entanglement structure — i.e., partial traces leave a separable state. By contrast, through explicit computation, we test in many examples that hyperbolic links (namely, links whose complements admit hyperbolic structures) have W-like entanglement — i.e., partial traces leave a non-separable state. (iii) Finally, we consider hyperbolic links in the complexified $$ \mathrm{S}\mathrm{L}\left(2,\mathrm{\mathbb{C}}\right) $$ S L 2 ℂ Chern-Simons theory, which is closely related to 3d Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. In the limit of small Newton constant, we discuss how the entanglement structure is controlled by the Neumann-Zagier potential on the moduli space of hyperbolic structures on the link complement.

Multi-entropy from linking in Chern-Simons theory

Ma-Ke Yuan, Ming‐Yi Li, Yang Zhou

A bstract We study the multipartite entanglement structure of quantum states prepared by the Euclidean path integral over three-manifolds with multiple torus boundaries (the so-called link states) in both Abelian and non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories. For three-component link states in the Abelian theory, we derive an explicit formula for the Rényi multi-entropy in terms of linking numbers. We further show that the genuine multi-entropy faithfully quantifies the tripartite entanglement generated by GHZ-states, consistent with the fact that the prepared states are stabilizer states. General upper and lower bounds on the genuine tripartite multi-entropy are conjectured for finite-dimensional quantum states.

Multi-boundary entanglement in Chern-Simons theory with finite gauge groups

Siddharth Dwivedi, Andrea Addazi, Yang Zhou +1 more

Abstract We study the multi-boundary entanglement structure of the states prepared in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensional Chern-Simons theory with finite discrete gauge group G. The states in (1+1)-d are associated with Riemann surfaces of genus g with multiple S 1 boundaries and we use replica trick to compute the entanglement entropy for such states. In (2+1)-d, we focus on the states associated with torus link complements which live in the tensor product of Hilbert spaces associated with multiple T 2. We present a quantitative analysis of the entanglement structure for both abelian and non-abelian groups. For all the states considered in this work, we find that the entanglement entropy for direct product of groups is the sum of entropy for individual groups, i.e. EE(G 1 × G 2) = EE(G 1) + EE(G 2). Moreover, the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing out a subset of the total Hilbert space has a positive semidefinite partial transpose on any bi-partition of the remaining Hilbert space.

Entanglement on linked boundaries in Chern-Simons theory with generic gauge groups

Siddharth Dwivedi, Vivek Kumar Singh, Saswati Dhara +3 more

We study the entanglement for a state on linked torus boundaries in 3d Chern-Simons theory with a generic gauge group and present the asymptotic bounds of Rényi entropy at two different limits: (i) large Chern-Simons coupling k, and (ii) large rank r of the gauge group. These results show that the Rényi entropies cannot diverge faster than ln k and ln r, respectively. We focus on torus links T (2, 2n) with topological linking number n. The Rényi entropy for these links shows a periodic structure in n and vanishes whenever n = 0 (mod p), where the integer p is a function of coupling k and rank r. We highlight that the refined Chern-Simons link invariants can remove such a periodic structure in n.
