Abstract

Quantum key distribution (QKD), which promises secure key exchange between two remote parties, is now moving toward the realization of scalable and secure QKD networks (QNs). Fully connected, trusted node-free QNs have been realized based on entanglement distribution, in which the low key rate and the large overhead make their practical application challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a fully connected multi-user QKD network based on a wavelength-multiplexed measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD protocol. By combining the MDI-QKD protocol with integrated optical frequency combs, we achieve an average secure key rate of 267 bits per second for about 30 dB of link attenuation per user pair—more than three orders of magnitude higher than previous entanglement-based works. More importantly, we realize communication between two different pairs of users simultaneously. Our work paves the way for the realization of large-scale QKD networks with full connectivity and simultaneous communication capability among multiple users.

High-secure quantum communication and networks

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can serve large numbers of users with unconditional secure communication, in which measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD protocol can conveniently enhance realistic security by eliminating all detector side channels. In multi-user scenarios, MDI-QKD networks should meet the requirements of reliability and robustness. Around the issues, we complete a series of work on performance improvement, low-cost deployment, and robust networking. First is to answer how to change the trusted node to the untrusted node with low cost, here we propose and demonstrate an MDIQKD which is compatible with phase encoding BB84 networks, allowing for economical deployment of MDI-QKD networks and reconciliation between high key rate and high realistic security in the same network. Then we make the MDI networks more robust. We design an MDI-QKD networking scheme for multi-user access where more than two users can generate keys synchronously regardless of aligning reference frames and compensating channel disturbance on polarization. Third, we find a general method to distil secure keys from quantum discord, which is different to the previous entanglement-based frameworks of MDI-QKD, allowing imperfect preparation and measurement of quantum states. The series of work can help the practical application of MDI-QKD networks, and promote the development of quantum networks.

40-user fully connected entanglement-based quantum key distribution network without trusted node

Xu Liu, Jingyuan Liu, Rong Xue +9 more

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) would play an important role in future information technologies due to its theoretically proven security based on the laws of quantum mechanics. How to realize QKDs among multiple users in an effective and simple way is crucial for its real applications in communication networks. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a fully connected QKD network without trusted node for a large number of users. Using flexible wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing and space division multiplexing, entanglement resources generated by a broadband energy-time entangled quantum light source are distributed to 40 users. Any two users share a part of entanglement resources, by which QKD is established between them. As a result, it realizes a fully connected network with 40 users and 780 QKD links. The performance of this network architecture is also discussed theoretically, showing its potential on developing quantum communication networks with large user numbers owing to its simplicity, scalability, and high efficiency.

A scalable network for simultaneous pairwise quantum key distribution via entanglement-based time-bin coding

Lucas Bialowons, Erik Fitzke, Maximilian Tippmann +4 more

We present simultaneous quantum key distribution (QKD) between any two pairs of participants in a 4-party star-shaped optical fiber network without a trusted node. Our QKD system is the first to extend an entanglement-based time-bin coding protocol to multiple pairs of participants. We demonstrate key exchange over distances of more than 75 km and show that our network can be readily extended to at least 34 participants by using wavelength-division multiplexing in the optical C-band and with small modifications up to 102 participants. Our scheme is compatible to multiplexing approaches that were implemented earlier with polarization-based QKD and can thereby be extended to a fully connected network. In contrast to polarization-based QKD, the all-fiber system we present is insensitive to polarization instabilities in the fiber link. This enables key distribution networks with low quantum bit error rates and stable secure key rates using deployed fibers even under challenging environmental conditions.

High-Rate Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution under Intense Noise

Anonymous, Wei-Xin Xie, Chun-Mei Zhang +9 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) is a promising path toward practical quantum communication, but current high-performance demonstrations come at prohibitive overhead and isolated environments. Here, we present a high-speed MDI-QKD system operating at an unprecedented repetition frequency of 2.5 GHz and verify its strong noise tolerance by incorporating the advantage distillation method. The secure key is efficiently generated under 425 kHz noise counts, which is 4 orders of magnitude higher than isolated systems. A secure key rate with a kbps level is achieved under 30 dB channel attenuation without bulky, resource-intensive detection devices. Our Letter establishes a complete practical solution for QKD deployment and resolves the persistent difficulty of realizing practical quantum secure networks with advanced security, a high key rate, environmental robustness, and physical compactness.

Robust and adaptable quantum key distribution network without trusted nodes

Guan‐Jie Fan‐Yuan, Feng-Yu Lu, Shuang Wang +8 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) networks are promising to serve large numbers of users with information-theoretic secure communication. In QKD networks, the detection-safe protocol, termed measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD, can naturally enhance realistic security by supporting untrusted measurement nodes. However, the environmental disturbances to quantum states degrade the performance of multi-user communication. Here we propose an MDI-QKD networking scheme with robustness against environmental disturbance and adaptability to multi-user access, where more than two users can generate keys simultaneously regardless of aligning reference frames and compensating channel disturbance on polarization. To achieve this, we introduce the reference-frame-independent protocol as well as a polarization-compensation-free method, design a multi-user measurement unit, and combine it with original two-user units. The scheme is experimentally demonstrated for the improvement of network robustness and adaptability in multi-user scenarios, and the time and device costs of disturbance compensation can be saved from O ( N ) to O ( 1 ) for an N-user network.

High-rate continuous-variable measurement device-independent quantum key distribution with finite-size security

Adnan A. E. Hajomer, Ulrik L. Andersen, Tobias Gehring

Abstract Building scalable and secure quantum networks requires advanced quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols that support multi-user connectivity. Continuous-variable (CV) measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD, which eliminates all detector side-channel attacks, is a promising candidate for creating various quantum network topologies-such as quantum access networks and star-type topologies-using standard technology and providing high secure key rates. However, its security has so far only been experimentally demonstrated in asymptotic regimes with limited secret key rates and complex experimental setups, limiting its practical applications. Here, we report an experimental validation of a CV MDI-QKD system, achieving a secure key rate of 2.6 Mbit s −1 against collective attacks in the finite-size regime over a 10 km fiber link. This is achieved using a new system design, incorporating a locally generated local oscillator, a new relay structure, a real-time phase locking system, and a well-designed digital-signal-processing pipeline for quantum state preparation and CV Bell measurements at a symbol rate of 20 MBaud. Our results set a new benchmark for secure key exchange and open the possibility of establishing high-performance CV MDI-QKD networks, paving the way toward a scalable quantum network.
