Abstract

We consider the homogeneous mean-field Bose gas at temperatures proportional to the critical temperature of its Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition. We prove a trace norm approximation for the grand canonical Gibbs state in terms of a reference state, which is given by a convex combination of products of coherent states and Gibbs states associated with certain temperature-dependent Bogoliubov Hamiltonians. The convex combination is expressed as an integral over a Gibbs distribution of a one-mode $Φ^4$-theory describing the condensate. This result justifies an analogue of Lee and Yang's extension of Bogoliubov theory to positive temperatures, and it allows us to derive various limiting distributions for the number of particles in the condensate, as well as precise formulas for the one- and two-particle density matrices of the Gibbs state. Key ingredients of our proof, which are of independent interest, include two novel abstract correlation inequalities. The proof of one of them is based on an application of an infinite-dimensional version of Stahl's theorem.

The mean-field limit of quantum Bose gases at positive temperature

Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Antti Knowles, Benjamin Schlein +1 more

We prove that the grand canonical Gibbs state of an interacting quantum Bose gas converges to the Gibbs measure of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the mean-field limit, where the density of the gas becomes large and the interaction strength is proportional to the inverse density. Our results hold in dimensions d ⩽ 3 d \leqslant 3 . For d > 1 d > 1 the Gibbs measure is supported on distributions of negative regularity and we have to renormalize the interaction. More precisely, we prove the convergence of the relative partition function and of the reduced density matrices in the L r L^r -norm with optimal exponent r r . Moreover, we prove the convergence in the L ∞ L^\infty -norm of Wick-ordered reduced density matrices, which allows us to control correlations of Wick-ordered particle densities as well as the asymptotic distribution of the particle number. Our proof is based on a functional integral representation of the grand canonical Gibbs state, in which convergence to the mean-field limit follows formally from an infinite-dimensional stationary phase argument for ill-defined non-Gaussian measures. We make this argument rigorous by introducing a white-noise-type auxiliary field, through which the functional integral is expressed in terms of propagators of heat equations driven by time-dependent periodic random potentials and can, in turn, be expressed as a gas of interacting Brownian loops and paths. When the gas is confined by an external trapping potential, we control the decay of the reduced density matrices using excursion probabilities of Brownian bridges.

Gross–Pitaevskii Limit of a Homogeneous Bose Gas at Positive Temperature

Andreas Deuchert, Robert Seiringer

Abstract We consider a dilute, homogeneous Bose gas at positive temperature. The system is investigated in the Gross–Pitaevskii limit, where the scattering lengthais so small that the interaction energy is of the same order of magnitude as the spectral gap of the Laplacian, and for temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature of the ideal gas. We show that the difference between the specific free energy of the interacting system and the one of the ideal gas is to leading order given by $$4 \pi a \left( 2 \varrho ^2 - \varrho _0^2 \right) $$ 4πa2ϱ2-ϱ02 . Here $$\varrho $$ ϱ denotes the density of the system and $$\varrho _0$$ ϱ0 is the expected condensate density of the ideal gas. Additionally, we show that the one-particle density matrix of any approximate minimizer of the Gibbs free energy functional is to leading order given by the one of the ideal gas. This in particular proves Bose–Einstein condensation with critical temperature given by the one of the ideal gas to leading order. One key ingredient of our proof is a novel use of the Gibbs variational principle that goes hand in hand with the c-number substitution.

Random field approximation and local counting statistics for the weakly interacting thermal Bose gas

Andreas Deuchert, Marcin Napiórkowski, Błażej Ruba

We study weakly interacting bosons on the three-dimensional torus at temperatures proportional to the critical temperature for Bose--Einstein condensation. We show that, as the expected particle number tends to infinity, the grand canonical Gibbs state is asymptotically described by the coherent state quantization of a random field that converges to a novel Bogoliubov random field. Moreover, the point process associated with the Gibbs state can be approximated by a Cox process. These results are based on and extend the approximation of the Gibbs state recently obtained by the first two authors and Nam. Using these approximations, we compute limiting distributions of the number of particles outside the condensate, the joint occupation statistics of finitely many momentum modes, and particle-number fluctuations in macroscopic subsets of the torus, all governed by the Bogoliubov field. We further prove convergence of the empirical measure of the associated point process to the uniform measure and convergence of the microscopic particle-number statistics to the boson point process. The latter result establishes the universality of particle-number statistics on microscopic length scales.

Upper Bound for the Grand Canonical Free Energy of the Bose Gas in the Gross–Pitaevskii Limit

Chiara Boccato, Andreas Deuchert, David Stocker

Abstract. We consider a homogeneous Bose gas in the Gross–Pitaevskii limit at temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature for Bose–Einstein condensation in the ideal gas. Our main result is an upper bound for the grand canonical free energy in terms of two new contributions: (a) The free energy of the interacting condensate is given in terms of an effective theory describing its particle number fluctuations, and (b) the free energy of the thermally excited particles equals that of a temperature-dependent Bogoliubov Hamiltonian.

Upper Bound for the Grand Canonical Free Energy of the Bose Gas in the Gross–Pitaevskii Limit for General Interaction Potentials

Marco Caporaletti, Andreas Deuchert

We consider a homogeneous Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit at temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation. Recently, an upper bound for the grand canonical free energy was proved in Boccato et al. (SIAM J Math Anal 56(2):2611-2660, 2024) capturing two novel contributions. First, the free energy of the interacting condensate is given in terms of an effective theory describing the probability distribution of the number of condensed particles. Second, the free energy of the thermally excited particles equals that of a temperature-dependent Bogoliubov Hamiltonian. We extend this result to a more general class of interaction potentials, including interactions with a hard core. Our proof follows a different approach than the one in Boccato et al. (SIAM J Math Anal 56(2):2611-2660, 2024): We model microscopic correlations between the particles by a Jastrow factor and exploit a cancellation in the computation of the energy that emerges due to the different length scales in the system.

Re-examining the Statistical Mechanics of an Interacting Bose Gas

A. M. Ettouhami

We re-examine the way in which Bogoliubov's theory of a dilute Bose gas at $T=0$ has been extended to describe the statistical mechanics of interacting bosons at finite temperature. We show explicitly that the field-theoretic calculation of the grand partition function in this formulation amounts to a canonical trace over the eigenfunctions of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian at fixed total number of bosons $N$, and that the additional trace over $N$ that is required in the grand-canonical formalism is never carried out. This implies that what usually passes as the grand-canonical treatment of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian is not quite grand-canonical, and is in fact a canonical one. We also show that the discontinuity in the condensate density predicted by previous formulations of this theory as the temperature $T$ goes past the critical transition temperature $T_c$ is a direct consequence of an inappropriate generalization of the Bogoliubov prescription to finite temperatures, and that this discontinuity disappears when this prescription is either used as a zero temperature approximation or avoided altogether. Armed with the above findings, we reformulate the statistical mechanics of interacting bosons in the canonical ensemble and derive the thermodynamics of the system. We then show how the canonical treatment can be used to setup a truly grand-canonical description of the statistical mechanics of a weakly interacting Bose gas where the average number of bosons in the system varies with temperature, unlike existing formulations where the total number of bosons $N$ is taken to be a constant that does not depend on $T$. Consequences on the physics of interacting bosons are briefly discussed.
