Floquet solutions in a parity-time-symmetric Rabi model

Abstract

It is shown that a semiclassical Rabi model with parity-time ( PT ) symmetry possesses quasiexact solutions, which can be found using the Lie-algebraic approach. These solutions are located precisely at the exceptional points of the spectrum, the boundaries of the PT -symmetric phase. The corresponding constraints on the model parameters can be interpreted as a resonance relationship between the constant and periodic driving terms. For sufficiently large resonance ratio and judiciously chosen parameters, we find that the time evolution of the complete qubit can be described exactly.

Exceptional points in a time-periodic parity-time-symmetric Rabi model

Qiongtao Xie, Shiguang Rong, Xiaoliang Liu

We investigate the effect of a periodic modulation on parity-time symmetry in a non-Hermitian Rabi model with balanced gain or loss. It is shown that under the multiple-photon resonance conditions, this Rabi model supports exact Floquet solutions for certain special parameter conditions which allow us to find exact analytical results for the position of certain exceptional points (EPs). It is also found numerically that there exists a universal relation between the number of the EPs and the gain or loss strength.

Exact Floquet solutions in a periodically driven non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric two-level model

Haiming Deng, Zhenjiang Shen, Qiongtao Xie

Abstract We investigate a type of periodically driven non-Hermitian two-level model with parity-time (PT) symmetry. It is shown that in a wide range of the model parameters, this model supports exact Floquet solutions. In particular, under certain parameter conditions, these exact Floquet solutions can characterize the transition from the unbroken PT-symmetric phase to the broken PT-symmetric phase.

Analytical study of the non-Hermitian semiclassical Rabi model

Yibo Liu, Liwei Duan, Qing‐Hu Chen

The PT -symmetric semiclassical Rabi model explores the fundamental interaction between a two-level atom and a classical field, revealing novel phenomena in open systems through the inclusion of non-Hermitian terms. We propose a single similarity transformation that yields an effective Hamiltonian in rotating-wave approximation, enabling an analytical solution. The phase boundary of the PT -broken phase, derived from the analytical eigenvalues, closely matches the numerically exact one over a wide range of atomic frequencies, demonstrating the effectiveness of the analytical approach, especially at the main resonance. The Floquet parity operator is also introduced, providing a deeper physical understanding of the emergence of the PT -broken phase. Furthermore, by analyzing the dynamics of excited-state population, we observe several stable oscillations in the Fourier spectrum, demonstrating the applicability of the analytical method beyond the single-photon resonance region. The Bloch-Siegert shift is also discussed, and surprisingly, resembles its Hermitian counterpart, except for the higher-order terms in the coupling strength. The present analytical treatment provides a concise and accurate description of the main physics of this non-Hermitian atom-field interaction system.

Quasi-Parity-Time symmetric dynamics in a periodcially driven two-level non-Hermitian system

Zhou Hu, Zhao‐Yun Zeng, Jia Tang +1 more

In recent years, there have been intensive studies on non-Hermitian physics and parity-time (PT) symmetry, due to their fundamental importance in theory and outstanding applications. A distinctive character in PT-symmetric systems is phase transition (spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking), where the energy spectrum changes from all real to complex when the non-Hermitian parameter exceeds a certain threshold. However, the conditions for PT-symmetric system with real energy spectrum to occur are rather restrictive. Generalization of PT-symmetric potentials to wider classes of non-PT-symmetric complex potentials with all-real spectra is a currently important endeavor. The simple PT-symmetric two-level Floquet quantum system is now being actively explored, because it holds potential for realization of non-unitary single-qubit quantum gate. However, studies on the evolution dynamics of non-PT-symmetric two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system still remain relatively rare. In this paper, we investigate the non-Hermitian physics of a periodically driven non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system. By phase-space analysis, we find that there exist so-called pseudo fixed points in phase space representing the Floquet solutions with fixed population difference and a time-dependent relative phase between the two levels. Based on these pseudo fixed points, we analytically construct the non-unitary evolution operator and then explore the dynamics of the non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system in different parameter regions. We confirm both analytically and numerically that the two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system, although being non-parity-time-symmetric, still features a phase transition with the quasienergy spectrum changing from all real to complex, just as for PT symmetric systems. Furthermore, we reveal that a novel phenomenon called quasi-PT symmetric dynamics occurs in the time evolution process. The quasi-PT symmetric dynamics is so named in our paper, in the sense that the time-evolution of population probabilities in the non-PT-symmetric two-level system respects fully the time-space symmetry (PT symmetry), while time-evolution of the quantum state (containing the phase) does not, due to the fact that time-evolution of the phases of the probability amplitudes on the two levels violates the PT symmetry requirement.

PT -symmetric Rabi model: Perturbation theory

Tony E. Lee, Yogesh N. Joglekar

We study a non-Hermitian version of the Rabi model, where a two-level system is periodically driven with an imaginary-valued drive strength, leading to alternating gain and loss. In the Floquet picture, the model exhibits $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, which can be broken when the drive is sufficiently strong. We derive the boundaries of the $\mathcal{PT}$ phase diagram for the different resonances by doing perturbation theory beyond the rotating-wave approximation. For the main resonance, we show that the non-Hermitian analog of the Bloch-Siegert shift corresponds to maximal $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking. For the higher-order resonances, we capture the boundaries to lowest order. We also solve the regime of high frequency by mapping to the Wannier-Stark ladder. Our model can be experimentally realized in waveguides with spatially modulated loss or in atoms with time-modulated spontaneous decay.
