Unnuclear matter at large charge

Abstract

The utility of the non-relativistic large-charge EFT for physical systems, and neutron matter in particular, relies on controlled Schrödinger-symmetry breaking deformations due to scattering length and effective-range effects in the two-body system. A recently-found exact solution of the large-charge system is used to compute these effects for two-point correlation functions of large-charge operators in perturbation theory around the large-charge ground state. Notably, the leading effective-range effects are found to enter at second order in the effective range, in agreement with analogous calculations in the three-body system. The Schrödinger-symmetry breaking deformations are used -- together with input from Quantum Monte Carlo simulations -- to address the range of validity of the EFT with deformations both in general and in the special case of neutron matter. In particular, it is found that nuclear reactions with up to six low-energy neutrons in the final state can be described by the large-charge EFT with Schrödinger-symmetry breaking.

Exact evaluation of large-charge correlation functions in nonrelativistic conformal field theory

Silas R. Beane, Domenico Orlando, Susanne Reffert

The large-charge master field which generates all n -point correlation functions with an insertion of large charge Q in nonrelativistic conformal field theory is obtained. This field is used to compute Schrödinger-invariant n -point correlation functions of large-charge operators via a direct evaluation of the path integral. Conformal dimensions are found to agree with calculations based on the state-operator correspondence. The master field solution exhibits an emergent harmonic trap whose frequency is a function of the Euclidean time. The large-charge effective action with operator insertions describes a droplet of superfluid matter whose spatial size scales with the time separation of sources. The solution is used to compute Schrödinger symmetry breaking corrections in the large-charge effective field theory (EFT) due to a finite scattering length in the fundamental theory of fermions near unitarity. The scaling of these effects in the large-charge power counting scheme is established, and the size of the effects is quantified using input from quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the near-unitary gas, as well as from the large- N expansion at large charge. Applied nonrelativistic conformal field theory: Scattering-length and effective-range corrections to rate of production of three neutrons at low relative momenta

Subham Dutta Chowdhury, Ruchira Mishra, Dam Thanh Son

Due to an accidentally large s -wave scattering length, in a relatively wide range of energy, neutrons are approximately described by the nonrelativistic conformal field theory of unitarity fermions, perturbed by one relevant and an infinite number of irrelevant operators. We develop a formalism which provides a nonperturbative definition of local operators in that nonrelativistic conformal field theory. We compute the scattering-length and effective-range corrections to the two-point functions of primary charge-three operators using the technique of conformal perturbation theory. These calculations allow us to find the first corrections to the scale-invariant behavior of the rate of nuclear reactions with three neutrons in the final state in the regime when the neutrons have small relative momenta. Universality and Beyond: Effective Field Theory for Three-Body Physics in Cold Atoms and Halo Nuclei

Chen Ji

Systems, such as cold atoms and light halo nuclei, share universal features at low energies, for which details of inter-particle interactions are not essential. We study threebody physics in such systems in an effective-field-theory (EFT) framework. We will discuss universal behavior in three-body systems and higher-order effectiverange corrections beyond universality. We study effective-range effects perturbatively up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (N 2 LO) for the case of three identical bosons. We apply this analysis to recombination features in cold atomic gases and properties of Helium trimers.Effective range corrections also play an important role in the EFT study of fewnucleon systems and halo nuclei. The ground-state of Helium-6 can be treated as a two-neutron halo with an alpha core. This bound state is generated by the resonant neutron-neutron and neutron-alpha interactions. The latter is dominated by a shallow p-wave resonance. We present a calculation of Helium-6 in an EFT approach appropriate for halo systems.

Few-body systems and the pionless effective field theory

Lucas Platter

The pionless effective field theory (EFT) is the appropriate low-energy EFT for short-range interactions that display a large scattering length. It has been successfully applied in atomic, nuclear and particle physics. We give an overview over recent calculations employing the pionless effective field theory and lay emphasis on applications in the three- and four-body sector where the most exciting developments have occurred.

Effective Field Theories for Nuclear and (Some) Atomic Physics

U. van Kolck

Abstract These lectures are a pedagogical—not comprehensive—introduction to the applications of effective field theory (EFT) in the context of nuclear and atomic physics. A common feature of these applications is the interplay between non-perturbative physics (needed at leading order to produce non-relativistic bound states and resonances) and controlled perturbative corrections (crucial for predictive power). The essential ideas are illustrated with the simplest nuclear EFT, pionless EFT, which contains only contact interactions and, with minor changes, can be adapted to certain atomic systems. This EFT exploits the two-body unitarity limit, where renormalization leads to discrete scale invariance in systems of three and more bodies. Remarkably complex structures then arise from very simple leading-order interactions. It briefly describes some of the challenges and rewards of including long-range forces—pion exchange in chiral EFT for nuclear systems or Van der Waals forces between atoms.

Nonrelativistic conformal field theories in the large charge sector

Shauna Kravec

We study Schrödinger invariant field theories (nonrelativistic conformal field theories) in the large charge (particle number) sector. We do so by constructing the effective field theory (EFT) for a Goldstone boson of the associated U(1) symmetry in a harmonic potential. This EFT can be studied semi-classically in a large charge expansion. We calculate the dimensions of the lowest lying operators, as well as correlation functions of charged operators. We find universal behavior of three point function in large charge sector. We comment on potential applications to fermions at unitarity and critical anyon systems.
