Abstract

We study the dynamic structure factor $S(k,\ensuremath{\omega})$ of the spin-1/2 chain with long-range, power-law decaying unfrustrated (sign-alternating) Heisenberg interactions ${J}_{r}\ensuremath{\sim}{(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{r\ensuremath{-}1}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ by means of stochastic analytic continuation (SAC) of imaginary-time correlations computed by quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. We do so in both the long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM, for $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\lesssim}2.23$) and quasi-long-range-ordered (QLRO, for $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2.23$) ground-state phases, employing different SAC parametrizations of $S(k,\ensuremath{\omega})$ to resolve sharp edges characteristic of fractional quasiparticles and sharp peaks expected with conventional quasiparticles. In order to identify the most statistically accurate parametrization, we apply a newly developed cross-validation method as a ``model selection'' tool. We confirm that the spectral function contains a power-law divergent edge in the QLRO phase and a very sharp (likely $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function) magnon peak in the AFM phase. From our SAC results, we extract the dispersion relation in the different regimes of the model, and in the AFM phase we extract the weight of the magnon pole. In the limit where the model reduces to the conventional Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbor interactions, our $S(k,\ensuremath{\omega})$ agrees well with known Bethe-ansatz results. In the AFM phase the low-energy dispersion relation is known to be nonlinear, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{k}\ensuremath{\sim}{k}^{z}$, and we extract the corresponding dynamic exponent $z(\ensuremath{\alpha})$, which in general is somewhat above the form obtained in linear spin-wave theory. We also find a significant continuum above the magnon peak. This study serves as a benchmark for SAC and QMC studies of systems with a transition from conventional to fractionalized quasiparticles.

Deconfined quantum criticality in spin-1/2 chains with long-range interactions

Sibin Yang, Dao‐Xin Yao, Anders W. Sandvik

We study spin-$1/2$ chains with long-range power-law decaying unfrustrated (bipartite) Heisenberg exchange $J_r \propto r^{-α}$ and multi-spin interactions $Q$ favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) ground state. Employing quantum Monte Carlo techniques and Lanczos diagonalization, we analyze order parameters and excited-state level crossings to characterize quantum states and phase transitions in the $(α,Q)$ plane. For weak $Q$ and sufficiently slowly decaying Heisenberg interactions (small $α$), the system has a long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, and upon increasing $α$ there is a continuous transition into a quasi long-range ordered (QLRO) critical state of the type in the standard Heisenberg chain. For rapidly decaying long-range interactions, there is transition between QLRO and VBS ground states of the same kind as in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain. Our most important finding is a direct continuous quantum phase transition between the AFM and VBS states - a close analogy to the 2D deconfined quantum-critical point. In previous 1D analogies the ordered phases both have gapped fractional excitations, and the critical point is a conventional Luttinger Liquid. In our model the excitations fractionalize upon transitioning from the AFM state, changing from spin waves to deconfined spinons. We extract critical exponents at the AFM-VBS transition and use order-parameter distributions to study emergent symmetries. We find emergent O($4$) symmetry of the O($3$) AFM and scalar VBS order parameters. Thus, the order parameter fluctuations exhibit the covariance of a uniaxially deformed O($4$) sphere (an "elliptical" symmetry). This unusual quantum phase transition does not yet have any known field theory description, and our detailed results can serve to guide its construction. We discuss possible experimental realizations.

Critical phenomena and quantum phase transition in long range Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains

Nicolas Laflorencie, Ian K. Affleck, Mona Berciu

Antiferromagnetic Hamiltonians with short range, non-frustrating interactions are well known to exhibit long range magnetic order in dimensions d ≥2 but exhibit only quasi-long-range order, with power-law decay of correlations, in d = 1 (for half-integer spin). On the other hand, non-frustrating long range interactions can induce long range order in d = 1. We study Hamiltonians in which the long range interactions have an adjustable amplitude λ, as well as an adjustable power law 1/| x | α , using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and analytic methods: spin-wave, large N non-linear σ model, and renormalization group methods. We map out the phase diagram in the λ–α plane and study the nature of the critical line separating the phases with long range and quasi-long-range order. We find that this corresponds to a novel line of critical points with continuously varying critical exponents and a dynamical exponent, z <1.

Dynamical correlations of S=1/2 quantum spin chains

Rodrigo G. Pereira

Spin-1/2 chains demonstrate some of the striking effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional systems. The XXZ model has been used to study the unusual properties of anisotropic spin chains in an external magnetic field. The zero temperature phase diagram for this model exhibits a critical or quasi-long-range-ordered phase which is a realization of a Luttinger liquid. While many static properties of spin-1/2 chains have been explained by combinations of analytical techniques such as bosonization and Bethe ansatz, the standard approach fails in the calculation of some time-dependent correlation functions. I present a study of the longitudinal dynamical structure factor for the XXZ model in the critical regime. I show that an approximation for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor in the limit of small momentum transfer can be obtained by going beyond the Luttinger model and treating irrelevant operators associated with band curvature effects. This approach is able to describe the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail at finite magnetic field. Integrability is shown to affect the low-energy effective model at zero field, with consequences for the line shape. The power-law singularities at the thresholds of the particle-hole continuum are investigated using an analogy with the X-ray edge problem. Using methods of Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, I compute the exact exponents for the edge singularities of the dynamical structure factor. The same methods are used to study the long-time asymptotic behavior of the spin self-correlation function, which is shown to be dominated by a high-energy excitation.

From deconfined spinons to coherent magnons in an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with long range interactions

Luhang Yang, Adrian E. Feiguin

We study the nature of the excitations of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg chain with staggered long range interactions using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method and by means of a multi-spinon approximation. The chain undergoes true symmetry breaking and develops long range order, transitioning from a gapless spin liquid to a gapless ordered AFM phase. The spin dynamic structure factor shows that the emergence of Néel order can be associated to the formation of bound states of spinons that become coherent magnons. The quasiparticle band leaks out from the two-spinon continuum that is pushed up to higher energies. Our physical picture is also supported by an analysis of the behavior of the excitations in real-time.

Spinon confinement: Dynamics of weakly coupled Hubbard chains

Marcin Raczkowski, Fakher F. Assaad

Using large-scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations in combination with the stochastic analytical continuation, we study two-particle dynamical correlation functions in the anisotropic square lattice of weakly coupled one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard chains at half filling and in the presence of weak frustration. The evolution of the static spin structure factor upon increasing the interchain coupling is suggestive of the transition from the power-law decay of spin-spin correlations in the 1D limit to long-range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-1D regime and at $T=0$. In the numerically accessible regime of interchain couplings, the charge sector remains gapped. The low-energy momentum dependence of the spin excitations is well described by the linear spin-wave theory with the largest intensity located around the antiferromagnetic wave vector. This magnon mode corresponds to a bound state of two spinons. At higher energies the spinons deconfine and we observe signatures of the two-spinon continuum which progressively fade away as a function of interchain hopping.

Bound states and deconfined spinons in the dynamical structure factor of the J 1 − J 2 spin-1 chain

Aman Sharma, Mithilesh Nayak, Henrik Moodysson Rønnow +1 more

Using a time-dependent density matrix renormalization group approach, we study the dynamical structure factor of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ spin-1 chain. As ${J}_{2}$ increases, the magnon mode develops incommensurability. The system undergoes a first-order transition at ${J}_{2}=0.76\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{J}_{1}$, and at that point, domain walls lead to a continuum of fractional quasiparticles or spinons. By studying small variations in ${J}_{2}$ around the transition point, we observe the confinement of spinons into bound states in the spectral function and find a smooth evolution of the spectrum into magnon modes away from the phase transition. We employ the single-mode approximation to accurately account for the dispersion of the magnon mode away from the phase transition and describe the associated continua and bound states. We extend the single-mode approximation to describe the dispersion of a spinon at the phase transition point and obtain its dispersion throughout the Brillouin zone. This allows us to relate the incommensurability at and around the transition point to the competition between a negative nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude and a positive next-nearest-neighbor one for the domain wall.
