Abstract

Using the density matrix renormalization group algorithm, we map the ground-state phase diagram of a two-leg Rydberg ladder array with lattice spacings ${a}_{x}=2{a}_{y}$. We identify various density wave phases that spontaneously break the translational symmetry or the top-bottom reflection symmetry within the ladder. By increasing the laser detuning from zero, where the system is in a disordered phase that preserves all symmetries, we observe density wave orders with spontaneous breaking of the translational ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ symmetries at intermediate detuning values, while the reflection symmetry is preserved. These orders exhibit nonzero bond orders with positive expectation values on every $p\mathrm{th}$ rung, thus labeled as ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}^{+}$ phases. At larger detuning values, another spontaneous breaking of the reflection symmetry, which disrupted the bond orders on the rungs, occurs via an Ising phase transition. In these phases, either the top or the bottom site is occupied in a staggered way on every $p\mathrm{th}$ rung, breaking the translational ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2p}$ symmetry, thus labeled by ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2p}$ phases. We locate and characterize the 3-state Potts point and Ashkin-Teller point along the commensurate lines, as well as the direct chiral phase transitions between the disordered phase and the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}^{+}$ $(p=3,4)$ phases. Critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $z$ are calculated for both conformal and chiral phase transition points. We finally identify two types of floating phases in the phase diagram: one characterized by a quasi-long-range incommensurate bond-order wave, and the other by a quasi-long-range incommensurate wave of density differences in the rungs. Our work motivates further applications of Rydberg atom arrays in quantum simulation.

Ground-state phase diagram of Rydberg atoms in a triangular-prism array

Qing-Yuan Zuo, Shuo Geng, Shan-Wen Tsai +1 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of Rydberg atoms in a triangular-prism optical tweezer array using the density matrix renormalization group. By tuning the detuning-to-Rabi-frequency ratio and the Rydberg blockade radius, the system realizes several density-wave phases with spontaneous breaking of translational and leg-exchange symmetries. Unlike two-leg Rydberg ladders with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ leg-exchange symmetry, the triangular prism has $\mathbb{D}_3$ symmetry, leading to a richer set of ordered phases and transitions. For blockade radius moderately larger than the lattice spacing, a phase with alternating double and single Rydberg occupancy appears at large detuning. It breaks $\mathbb{Z}_2$ translational and $\mathbb{Z}_3$ rotational symmetry while preserving a rung reflection symmetry. Upon decreasing detuning, it melts through two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions with an intermediate critical phase described by a $\mathbb{Z}_6$ clock model. At larger blockade radius, a phase with one Rydberg excitation per triangle and broken $\mathbb{D}_3$ symmetry appears through a first-order transition. When double occupation of neighboring triangles is suppressed, rung-trimerized density waves develop as detuning increases from the disordered phase. Their melting follows the same structure as in Rydberg chains and two-leg ladders: the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ case has Ising critical lines, while the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ cases have chiral critical lines, with Potts and Ashkin-Teller points only on the corresponding commensurate lines. Inside the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ rung-trimerized phase, an entanglement-entropy peak signals a crossover regime with enhanced period-2 density modulation before a first-order transition into a $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{D}_3$ phase. Floating phases with incommensurate quasi-long-range order appear between trimerized states of different periods.

Numerical investigation of quantum phases and phase transitions in a two-leg ladder of Rydberg atoms

Jose Soto Garcia, Natalia Chepiga

Experiments on chains of Rydberg atoms appear as a playground to study quantum phase transitions in 1D. As a natural extension, we report a quantitative ground-state phase diagram of Rydberg atoms arranged in a two-leg ladder interacting via van der Waals potential. We address this problem numerically, using the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. Our results suggest that, quite remarkably, Z k crystalline phases, with the exception of the checkerboard phase, appear in pairs characterized by the same pattern of occupied rungs but distinguishable by a spontaneously broken Z ̃ 2 symmetry between the two legs of the ladder. Within each pair, the two phases are separated by a continuous transition in the Ising universality class, which eventually fuses with the Z k transition, whose nature depends on k . According to our results, the transition into the Z 2 ⊗ Z ̃ 2 phase changes its nature multiple times, including an Ashkin-Teller transition that is surprisingly stable over an extended interval, followed by the Z 4 -chiral transition, and finally in a two step-process mediated melting via the floating phase. The transition into the Z 3 phase with resonant states on the rungs belongs to the three-state Potts universality class at the commensurate point, to the Z 3 -chiral Huse-Fisher universality class away from it, and eventually it is through an intermediate floating phase. The Ising transition between Z 3 and Z 3 ⊗ Z ̃ 2 phases, entering the floating phase, opens the possibility to realize lattice supersymmetry in Rydberg quantum simulators.

Phase diagram of a dual-species Rydberg atom ladder

Lei-Yi-Nan Liu, Shi-Rong Peng, Ze-Yuan Huang +4 more

Dual-species Rydberg atom arrays extend single-species platforms by introducing competing interaction scales and enhanced quantum fluctuations, enabling phenomena beyond homogeneous settings. In this work, we study the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional dual-species Rydberg atom ladder using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations. We identify disordered phases, multiple ordered phases with $\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_3$, and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry, as well as floating phases characterized by incommensurate wave vectors and algebraically decaying correlations. Importantly, we observe a smooth crossover between distinct $\mathbb{Z}_2$-ordered regimes, reflecting a reorganization of low-energy degrees of freedom rather than a true phase transition, which is absent in single-species Rydberg arrays. We further uncover a multi-critical point at the boundary between the $\mathbb{Z}_2 \otimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_3 \otimes \mathbb{Z}_3$ ordered phases, where Ising, chiral, and first-order transition lines intersect. Our results demonstrate that dual-species Rydberg atom arrays provide a unique platform for realizing crossover physics and multi-critical behavior inaccessible in single-species architectures.

Probing quantum floating phases in Rydberg atom arrays

Jin Zhang, Sergio Cantu, Fangli Liu +10 more

The floating phase, a critical incommensurate phase, has been theoretically predicted as a potential intermediate phase between crystalline ordered and disordered phases. In this study, we investigate the different quantum phases that arise in ladder arrays comprising up to 92 neutral-atom qubits and experimentally observe the emergence of the quantum floating phase. We analyze the site-resolved Rydberg state densities and the distribution of state occurrences. The site-resolved measurement reveals the formation of domain walls within the commensurate ordered phase, which subsequently proliferate and give rise to the floating phase with incommensurate quasi-long-range order. By analyzing the Fourier spectra of the Rydberg density-density correlations, we observe clear signatures of the incommensurate wave order of the floating phase. Furthermore, as the experimental system sizes increase, we show that the wave vectors approach a continuum of values incommensurate with the lattice. Our work motivates future studies to further explore the nature of commensurate-incommensurate phase transitions and their non-equilibrium physics. The critical floating phase can bridge crystalline orders and the disordered phase. Here, the authors experimentally observe the quantum floating phase in neutral atom qubit arrays, revealing domain walls and incommensurate quasi long-range order, and analyse its emergence via Fourier spectroscopy.

Conformal and chiral phase transitions in Rydberg chains

Ivo A. Maceira, Natalia Chepiga, Frédéric Mila

Using density matrix renormalization group simulations on open chains, we map out the wave vector in the incommensurate disordered phase of a realistic model of Rydberg chains with $1/{r}^{6}$ interactions, and we locate and characterize the points along the commensurate lines where the transition out of the period 3 and 4 phases is conformal. We confirm that it is three-state Potts for the period-3 phase, and we show that it is Ashkin-Teller with $\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.80$ for the period-4 phase. We further show that close to these points, the transition is still continuous, but with a completely different scaling of the wave vector, in agreement with a chiral transition. Finally, we propose to use the conformal points as benchmarks for Kibble-Zurek experiments, defining a roadmap towards a conclusive identification of the chiral universality class.

Critical lines and ordered phases in a Rydberg-blockade ladder

Luisa Eck, Paul Fendley

Arrays of Rydberg atoms in the blockade regime realize a wealth of strongly correlated quantum physics, but theoretical analysis beyond the chain is rather difficult. Here we study a tractable model of Rydberg-blockade atoms on the square ladder with a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry and at most one excited atom per square. We find ${D}_{4}$, ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$, and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ density-wave phases separated by critical and first-order quantum phase transitions. A noninvertible remnant of $U(1)$ symmetry applies to our full three-parameter space of couplings, and its presence results in a larger critical region as well as two distinct ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$-broken phases. Along an integrable line of couplings, the model exhibits a self-duality that is spontaneously broken along a first-order transition. Aided by numerical results, perturbation theory, and conformal field theory, we also find critical ${\mathrm{Ising}}^{2}$ and three-state Potts transitions, and provide good evidence that the latter can be chiral.
