Abstract

For an open quantum system described by the Lindblad equation, full characterization of its dynamics typically needs the knowledge of the Liouvillian spectrum and correlation functions. Solving the Liouvillian spectrum and correlation functions are usually formidable tasks, and most previous studies are constrained to simple models and lower-order correlations. In this work, we derive a closed form of dynamical recursion equations for all even-order correlation functions associated with the quadratic Liouvillian superoperator, thus extending Wick's theorem and enabling the reconstruction of the corresponding Liouvillian spectrum. Furthermore, we study the quartic Liouvillian superoperator, establishing the necessary and sufficient conditions for the closure of second-order correlation functions. Building on this, the dynamical expressions for even-order correlation functions under quadratic dissipation are derived, culminating in a method for constructing the Liouvillian spectrum in this extended framework.

Solving quasi-free and quadratic Lindblad master equations for open fermionic and bosonic systems

Thomas Barthel, Yikang Zhang

Abstract The dynamics of Markovian open quantum systems are described by Lindblad master equations. For fermionic and bosonic systems that are quasi-free, i.e. with Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the ladder operators and Lindblad operators that are linear in the ladder operators, we derive the equation of motion for the covariance matrix. This determines the evolution of Gaussian initial states and the steady states, which are also Gaussian. Using ladder super-operators (a.k.a. third quantization), we show how the Liouvillian can be transformed to a many-body Jordan normal form which also reveals the full many-body spectrum. Extending previous work by Prosen and Seligman, we treat fermionic and bosonic systems on equal footing with Majorana operators, shorten and complete some derivations, also address the odd-parity sector for fermions, give a criterion for the existence of bosonic steady states, cover non-diagonalizable Liouvillians also for bosons, and include quadratic systems. In extension of the quasi-free open systems, quadratic open systems comprise additional Hermitian Lindblad operators that are quadratic in the ladder operators. While Gaussian states may then evolve into non-Gaussian states, the Liouvillian can still be transformed to a useful block-triangular form, and the equations of motion for k -point Green’s functions form a closed hierarchy. Based on this formalism, results on criticality and dissipative phase transitions in such models are discussed in a companion paper.

Algebraic structures of the Lindblad equation

Leonel Bixano, Guillermo López-Alvarez, Victor Alberto Cruz-Barriguete +4 more

We investigate the algebraic structure underlying the Lindblad equation for finite-dimensional open quantum systems. By introducing a suitable operator representation of the Liouville superoperator, we show that the dynamics can be formulated in terms of a closed algebra of Hermitian operators that is independent of the particular physical model. This formulation reveals that dissipative dynamics requires a substantially richer algebraic structure than purely unitary evolution, thereby providing a clear characterization of the additional complexity introduced by the Lindbladian. The resulting framework naturally leads to parametrizations of the dynamical map and to differential equations governing its evolution. We further derive recursion relations that enable the efficient construction of the algebra for systems of increasing dimension. Because the algebraic basis is universal, while all model-dependent information enters through a single set of coefficients, the proposed approach significantly reduces the computational cost of constructing the Liouville superoperator compared with direct methods. To facilitate the implementation of the method, we provide a Mathematica notebook containing a one-qubit example that can be systematically extended to an arbitrary number of qubits. The proposed framework therefore provides both a general mathematical description of finite-dimensional Lindblad dynamics and a practical foundation for efficient analytical and numerical implementations.

Symmetry of Open Quantum Systems: Classification of Dissipative Quantum Chaos

Kohei Kawabata, Anish Kulkarni, Jiachen Li +2 more

We develop a theory of symmetry in open quantum systems.Using the operator-state mapping, we characterize symmetry of Liouvillian superoperators for the open quantum dynamics by symmetry of operators in the double Hilbert space and apply the 38-fold internal-symmetry classification of non-Hermitian operators. We find rich symmetry classification due to the interplay between symmetry in the corresponding closed quantum systems and symmetry inherent in the construction of the Liouvillian superoperators. As an illustrative example of open quantum bosonic systems, we study symmetry classes of dissipative quantum spin models. For open quantum fermionic systems, we develop the Z 4 classification of fermion parity symmetry and antiunitary symmetry in the double Hilbert space, which contrasts with the Z 8 classification in closed quantum systems. We also develop the symmetry classification of open quantum fermionic many-body systems-a dissipative generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model described by the Lindblad master equation. We establish the periodic tables of the SYK Lindbladians and elucidate the difference from the SYK Hamiltonians.Furthermore, from extensive numerical calculations, we study its complex-spectral statistics and demonstrate dissipative quantum chaos enriched by symmetry.

Algebraic approach for investigation of a multi-mode quantum system dynamics

Andrei Gaidash, Козубов Антон Владимирович, Alexei D. Kiselev +1 more

We introduce algebraic approach for superoperators that might be useful tool for investigation of quantum (bosonic) multi-mode systems and its dynamics. In order to demonstrate potential of proposed method we consider multi-mode Liouvillian superoperator that describes relaxation dynamics of a quantum system (including thermalization and intermode coupling). Considered algebraic structure of superoperators that form Liouvillian and their algebraic properties allows us to diagonilize multi-mode Liouvillian to find its spectrum. Also it allows to derive linear by mean number of thermal (environmental) photons approximation for time-evolution superoperator that keeps amount of considered dimensions in Fock space finite (assuming initial amount of dimensions finite) that might be helpful regarding entanglement dynamics problems. Conjugate Liouvillian is considered as well in order to perform analysis in Heisenberg picture, it can be implemented for multi-time correlation functions derivation.

Lindblad dynamics of open multi-mode bosonic systems: Algebra of bilinear superoperators, exceptional points and speed of evolution

Andrei Gaidash, Alexei D. Kiselev, Козубов Антон Владимирович +1 more

We develop the algebraic method based on the Lie algebra of quadratic combinations of left and right superoperators associated with matrices to study the Lindblad dynamics of multimode bosonic systems coupled a thermal bath and described by the Liouvillian superoperator that takes into account both dynamical (coherent) and environment mediated (incoherent) interactions between the modes. Our algebraic technique is applied to transform the Liouvillian into the diagonalized form by eliminating jump superoperators and solve the spectral problem. The temperature independent effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, $\hat{H}_{eff}$, is found to govern both the diagonalized Liouvillian and the spectral properties. It is shown that the Liouvillian exceptional points are represented by the points in the parameter space where the matrix, $H$, associated with $\hat{H}_{eff}$ is non-diagonalizable. We use our method to derive the low-temperature approximation for the superpropagator and to study the special case of a two mode system representing the photonic polarization modes. For this system, we describe the geometry of exceptional points in the space of frequency and relaxation vectors parameterizing the intermode couplings and, for a single-photon state, evaluate the time dependence of the speed of evolution as a function of the angles characterizing the couplings and the initial state.

Emergent quantum algebras in dissipative time crystals

Joseph Tindall

Strong dynamical symmetries provide an algebraic description of persistent oscillations in open quantum systems governed by the Lindblad equation. For finite-dimensional systems with a full-rank stationary state, such symmetries are necessary and sufficient for non-decaying oscillatory modes to appear in the Liouvillian's spectrum. These modes can be directly constructed by acting on stationary states with the identified symmetry operators. Here we establish an asymptotic counterpart of this algebra for collective spins. Taking a single spin $S$ in a magnetic field, subject to dissipation through linear jump operators, we identify the exact conditions on the field and dissipative couplings under which non-decaying oscillatory modes emerge as $S \rightarrow \infty$. We then write down a simple, closed form for the corresponding `symmetry' operator which can be applied to the steady state to construct these modes, which are eigenvectors of the Liouvillian, with imaginary eigenvalues, up to $O(1/S)$ corrections. A second operator, an emergent conserved quantity, completes the algebra, and its slow relaxation determines how quantum noise selects the stationary state. The construction can be directly extended to a pair of interacting spins sharing a common reservoir, with the resulting quantum algebra making the entanglement during a quench analytically accessible.
