Super-Poissonian Squeezed Light in the Deep Strong Regime of the Quantum Rabi Model

Abstract

By analytically solving the quantum Rabi model, we investigate the photonic properties of its ground eigenstate. In particular, we find that in the deep strong coupling regime, where the coupling strength $g$ exceeds the mode frequency $ω$, the photonic state is effectively squeezed in one of its quadratures. The squeezing reaches its maximum at the curve corresponding to the quantum phase transition of the quantum Rabi system, and decreases rapidly on both sides of the phase transition. Notably, for $g/ω\approx 3$, which is experimentally testable in existing trapped-ion platforms, the achievable squeezing parameter can reach approximately $r\approx 0.8$. Intriguingly, the photonic state is squeezed while its number distribution follows a super-Poissonian distribution, with the largest deviation from Poissonian behavior occurring at the phase transition between the normal and superradiant phases. In other words, the ground state of the quantum Rabi model contains super-Poissonian quantum squeezed photons.

Characterizing Superradiant Phase of the Quantum Rabi Model

Yun-Tong Yang, Hong‐Gang Luo

Recently, a superradiant phase transition first predicted theoretically in the quantum Rabi model (QRM) has been verified experimentally. This further stimulates the interest in the study of the process of phase transition and the nature of the superradiant phase since the fundamental role of the QRM in describing the interaction of light and matter, and more importantly, the QRM contains rich physics deserving further exploration despite its simplicity. Here we propose a scheme consisting of two successive diagonalizations to accurately obtain the ground-state and excited states wavefunctions of the QRM in full parameter regime ranging from weak to deep-strong couplings. Thus, one is able to see how the phase transition occurs and how the photons populate in Fock space of the superradiant phase. We characterize the photon populations by borrowing the distribution concept in random matrix theory and find that the photon population follows a Poissonian-like distribution once the phase transition takes place and further exhibits the statistics of Gaussian unitary ensemble with increasing coupling strength. More interestingly, the photons in the excited states behave even like the statistics of Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. Our results not only deepen understanding on the superradiant phase transition but also provide an insight on the nature of the superradiant phase of the QRM and related models.

First-order quantum phase transition in the two-qubit squeezed Rabi model

Xuan-Tong Pei, Zhi‐Cheng Shi, Li-Tuo Shen +1 more

We study the ground state of the two-qubit squeezed Rabi model. Two special transformations are found to diagonalize the system Hamiltonian when each qubit’s frequency is close to the field frequency, where both the squeezing and counterrotating-wave interactions are removed, leading to an effective integrable Hamiltonian. The analytical ground state is determined and matches with numerical solutions well for a range of squeezing strengths and qubit-field detunings in the ultrastrong-coupling regime. We demonstrate that the ground state exhibits a first-order quantum phase transition at a phase boundary linearly induced by the squeezed light. We characterize the two-qubit negativity analytically and find that its two-qubit entanglement increases with the increasing squeezing strength nonlinearly. The average photon numbers of the field mode and variances of position and momentum quadratures are also analyzed and discovered to have a nonlinear relation with the squeezing strength. Finally, we discuss the experimental scheme and realization possibility of the predicted results.

Super-Poissonian Squeezed Light in the Ground State of Strongly Coupled Light-matter Systems

Cankut Tasci, Mohammad Hassan, Leon Orlov-Sullivan +2 more

Strong light-matter coupling enables hybrid states in which photonic and electronic degrees of freedom become correlated even in the ground state. While many-body effects in long-range dispersion interactions are known to reshape electronic properties under such conditions, their impact on quantum-optical observables remains largely unexplored. Here, we address this problem using quantum electrodynamical density-functional theory (QEDFT) combined with the recently developed photon-many-body dispersion (pMBD) functional, which can capture higher-order electron-photon correlations and multi-photon processes. We compute ground-state photonic observables including photon number fluctuations, second-order correlations, and quadrature variances, and find squeezing and super-Poissonian photon statistics emerging from light-matter interactions in the strong coupling regime. Our results demonstrate that capturing the full hierarchy of many-body, electron-photon and multi-photon correlations is essential for a consistent description of quantum-optical properties in strongly coupled molecular systems, establishing QEDFT as a first-principles framework for predicting nonclassical photonic features in the ground state of complex systems.

First-order quantum phase transition in the squeezed Rabi model

Jingwen Yang, Zhi‐Cheng Shi, Zhen‐Biao Yang +2 more

Abstract Quantum phase transition and entanglement in the Rabi model with a squeezed light are investigated. We find a special unitary-transformation method that removes the nonintegrable squeezing and counterrotating-wave interactions when the qubit frequency is close to the field frequency. The analytical ground state agrees well with the numerical solution. We demonstrate that the ground state exhibits a first-order quantum phase transition at a critical point induced linearly by the squeezed light. This quantum phase transition requires neither multiple qubits nor an infinite ratio of qubit frequency to field frequency, which solves a critical problem for the theory and experiment in Rabi model. As the qubit-field coupling strength increases, the ground-state entanglement reaches its maximum value at the critical point.

Photon Squeezing and Its Signatures of Quantum Phase Transitions in the Open Quantum Rabi-Stark Model

Tian Ye, Xinghan Chen, Chen Wang

As a hallmark of nonclassical light, squeezed light is of profound theoretical interest and holds broad practical promise for emerging quantum technologies. In this work, we investigate steady-state optical quadrature squeezing in the open quantum Rabi-Stark model by employing the quantum dressed master equation. Both numerically and analytically, we find that positive (negative) Stark coupling tends to enhance (suppress) the squeezing effect. The quadrature squeezing exhibits distinct signatures associated with both first- and second-order quantum phase transitions (QPTs). Notably, a sharp vanishing of squeezing is observed across the first-order QPT, suggesting its potential as a sensitive probe of such transitions. In the vicinity of the second-order QPT, we further demonstrate that the squeezing factor displays finite-size scaling behavior, indicating a promising route toward the realization of near-perfect squeezing. Moreover, we establish a quantitative criterion for the disruption of quantum criticality induced by thermal fluctuations, which may offer valuable guidance for future experiments. These findings contribute to a deep understanding of nonclassical light in light-matter interacting systems and provide useful insights for the design of strong optical squeezing states.
