Connection between free-fermion and interacting crystalline symmetry-protected topological phases

Abstract

We present a framework for investigating the effects of interactions on crystalline symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Within this framework, one can establish a direct connection between the equivalence classes of free-fermion systems and their corresponding interacting classes. A central component of this framework is the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, which provides a systematic way to represent crystalline SPT phases as SPT phases with internal symmetries on subspaces. We demonstrate the application of this approach through examples in various dimensions: 1d systems with U(1) and reflection symmetry, 2d systems with U(1) and C_{n} rotation symmetry, and 3d systems with U(1) and inversion symmetry.

Generalized homology and Atiyah–Hirzebruch spectral sequence in crystalline symmetry protected topological phenomena

Ken Shiozaki, Charles Zhaoxi Xiong, Kiyonori Gomi

Abstract We propose that symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with crystalline symmetry are formulated by an equivariant generalized homology $h^G_n(X)$ over a real space manifold X with G a crystalline symmetry group. The Atiyah–Hirzebruch spectral sequence unifies various notions in crystalline SPT phases, such as the layer construction, higher-order SPT phases, and Lieb–Schultz–Mattis-type theorems. This formulation is applicable to not only free fermionic systems but also interacting systems with arbitrary onsite and crystal symmetries.

Rotation symmetry-protected topological phases of fermions

Meng Cheng, Chenjie Wang

We study the classification of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with both rotation symmetry and Abelian internal symmetries in one, two, and three dimensions. By working out this classification, on the one hand, we demonstrate the recently proposed correspondence principle between crystalline topological phases and those with internal symmetries through explicit block-state constructions. We find that for the precise correspondence to hold it is necessary to change the central extension structure of the symmetry group by the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ fermion parity. On the other hand, we uncover new classes of intrinsically fermionic SPT phases that are only enabled by interactions, both in 2D and 3D. Several 3D Majorana-type fermionic SPT phases are identified. Moreover, several new instances of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems for Majorana-type fermionic SPT phases are obtained and we discuss their interpretations from the perspective of bulk-boundary correspondence.

Crystalline-equivalent topological phases of many-body fermionic systems in one dimension

Chen-Shen Lee, Ken Shiozaki, Chang-Tse Hsieh

We explore one-dimensional fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases related by the crystalline equivalence principle. In particular, we study charge-conserving many-body topological phases of fermions protected respectively by chiral and reflection symmetries. While the classifications of the two crystalline-equivalent SPT phases are identical, their topological properties and phase structures can be very different, depending on the microscopic details. Specifically, we consider certain extensions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, with and without interactions, that preserve both chiral and reflection symmetries, and explicitly compute the many-body topological invariants based on the systems' ground states. The phase structures determined by these topological invariants align perfectly with the many-body spectra of deformations among the models. As expected, gapped deformations exist only when all the topological invariants remain unchanged. Moreover, we show that decomposable systems -- those that can be decomposed into local and decoupled subsystems -- can be topologically characterized by real-space quantum numbers directly associated with the symmetries. For reflection-symmetric systems, these quantum numbers are related to the many-body topological invariants via a bulk-center correspondence, which can be justified using the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence in generalized homology theory. Finally, we discuss the role of transition symmetry in the many-body topologies of these SPT phases.

Classification of Interacting Topological Crystalline Superconductors in Three Dimensions and Beyond

Shang-Qiang Ning, Xing-Yu Ren, Qing-Rui Wang +2 more

Although classification for free-fermion topological superconductors (TSC) is established, systematically understanding the classification of 3D interacting TSCs remains difficult, especially those protected by crystalline symmetries like the 230 space groups. We build up a general framework for systematically classifying 3D interacting TSCs protected by crystalline symmetries together with discrete internal symmetries. We first establish a complete classification for fermionic symmetry protected topological phases (FSPT) with purely discrete internal symmetries, which determines the crystalline case via the crystalline equivalence principle. Using domain wall decoration, we obtain classification data and formulas for generic FSPTs, what are suitable for systematic computation. The four layers of decoration data $(n_1, n_2, n_3, ν_4)$ characterize a 3D FSPT with symmetry $G_b\times_{ω_2}Z_2^f$, corresponding to $p+ip$, Kitaev chain, complex fermion, and bosonic SPT layers. Inspired by previous works, a crucial aspect is the $p+ip$ layer, where classification involves two possibilities: anti-unitary and infinite-order symmetries (e.g., translation). We show the former maps to some mirror FSPT classification with the mirror plane decorated by a $p+ip$ superconductor, while the latter is determined by the free part of $H^1(G_b, Z_T)$, corresponding to weak TSCs. Another key point is the Kitaev chain decoration for the anti-unitary symmetries, which differs essentially from unitary ones. We explicitly obtain formulas for all three layers of decoration $(n_2, n_3, ν_4)$, which are amenable to automatic computation. As an application, we classify the 230 space-group topological crystalline superconductors in interacting electronic systems.

Real-space construction of crystalline topological superconductors and insulators in 2D interacting fermionic systems

Jian-Hao Zhang, Shuo Yang, Yang Qi +1 more

The construction and classification of crystalline symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting bosonic and fermionic systems have been intensively studied in the past few years. Crystalline SPT phases are not only of conceptual importance, but also provide us great opportunities towards experimental realization since space group symmetries naturally exist for any realistic material. In this paper, we systematically classify the crystalline topological superconductors (TSC) and topological insulators (TI) in 2D interacting fermionic systems by using an explicit real-space construction. In particular, we discover an intriguing fermionic crystalline topological superconductor that can only be realized in interacting fermionic systems (i.e., not in free-fermion or interacting bosonic systems). Moreover, we also verify the recently conjectured crystalline equivalence principle for generic 2D interacting fermionic systems.

Construction and classification of point-group symmetry-protected topological phases in two-dimensional interacting fermionic systems

The construction and classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting bosonic and fermionic systems have been intensively studied in the past few years. Very recently, a complete classification and construction of space-group SPT phases were also proposed for interacting bosonic systems. In this Rapid Communication, we attempt to generalize this classification and construction scheme systematically into interacting fermion systems. In particular, we construct and classify point-group SPT phases for two-dimensional (2D) interacting fermion systems via lower-dimensional block-state decorations. We discover several intriguing fermionic SPT states that can only be realized in interacting fermion systems (i.e., not in free-fermion or bosonic SPT systems). Moreover, we also verify the recently conjectured crystalline equivalence principle for 2D interacting fermion systems. Finally, the potential experimental realization of these different classes of point-group SPT phases in 2D correlated superconductors is addressed.
