Exact Spectral Properties of Fermi Polarons in One-Dimensional Lattices: Anomalous Fermi Singularities and Polaron Quasiparticles

Abstract

We calculate the exact spectral function of a single impurity repulsively interacting with a bath of fermions in one-dimensional lattices, by deriving the explicit expression of the form factor for both regular Bethe states and the irregular spin-flip state and η-pairing state, based on the exactly solvable one-dimensional Hubbard model. While at low impurity momentum Q∼0 the spectral function is dominated by two power-law Fermi singularities, at large momentum we observe that the two singularities develop into two-sided distributions and eventually become anomalous Fermi singularities at the boundary of the Brillouin zone (i.e., Q=±π), with the power-law tails extending toward low energy. Near the quarter filling of the Fermi bath, we also find two broad polaron peaks at large impurity momentum, collectively contributed by many excited many-body states with non-negligible form factors. Our exact results of those distinct features in one-dimensional Fermi polarons, which have no correspondences in two and three dimensions, could be readily probed in cold-atom laboratories by trapping highly imbalanced two-component fermionic atoms into one-dimensional optical lattices.

Exact calculation of spectral properties of a particle interacting with a one-dimensional Fermi gas in optical lattices

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

Abstract By using the exact Bethe wavefunctions of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with N spin-up fermions and one spin-down impurity, we derive an analytic expression of the impurity form factor, in the form of a determinant of a $$(N+1)$$ ( N + 1 ) by $$(N+1)$$ ( N + 1 ) matrix. This analytic expression enables us to exactly calculate spectral properties of one-dimensional Fermi polarons in lattices, when the masses of the impurity particle and the Fermi bath are equal. We present the impurity spectral function as functions of the on-site interaction strength and the filling factor of the Fermi bath, and discuss the origin of Fermi singularities in the spectral function at small momentum and the emergence of polaron quasiparticles at large momentum near the boundary of Brillouin zone. Our analytic expression of the impurity form factors pave the way to exploring the intriguing dynamics of a particle interacting with a Fermi bath. Our exact predictions on the impurity spectral function could be directly examined in cold-atom laboratories by using the radio-frequency spectroscopy and Ramsey spectroscopy.

Bose Polaron in a One-Dimensional Lattice with Power-Law Hopping

G. A. Domínguez‐Castro

Polarons, quasiparticles resulting from the interaction between an impurity and the collective excitations of a medium, play a fundamental role in physics, mainly because they represent an essential building block for understanding more complex many-body phenomena. In this manuscript, we study the spectral properties of a single impurity mixed with identical bosons in a one-dimensional lattice with power-law hopping. In particular, based on the so-called T-matrix approximation, we show the existence of well-defined quasiparticle branches for several tunneling ranges and for both repulsive and attractive impurity-boson interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the persistence of the attractive polaron branch when the impurity-boson bound state is absorbed into the two-body continuum and that the attractive polaron becomes more robust as the range of the hopping increases. The results discussed here are relevant for the understanding of the equilibrium properties of quantum systems with power-law interactions.

Spectral function of spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice

Rodrigo G. Pereira, Steven R. White, Ian K. Affleck

We study the spectral function of interacting one-dimensional fermions for an integrable lattice model away from half-filling. The divergent power-law singularity of the spectral function near the single-particle or single-hole energy is described by an effective x-ray edge type model. At low densities and for momentum near the zone boundary, we find a second divergent singularity at higher energies which is associated with a two-particle bound state. We use the Bethe ansatz solution of the model to calculate the exact singularity exponents for any momentum and for arbitrary values of chemical potential and interaction strength in the critical regime. We relate the singularities of the spectral function to the long-time decay of the fermion Green's function and compare our predictions with numerical results from the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG). Our results show that the tDMRG method is able to provide accurate time decay exponents in the cases of power-law decay of the Green's function. Some implications for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor away from half-filling are also discussed. In addition, we show that 85% of the total spectral weight in the zero field Heisenberg model near wave-vector $q=\ensuremath{\pi}$ is given by the two-spinon contribution.

One-dimensional Fermi polaron after a kick: Two-sided singularity of the momentum distribution, Bragg reflection and other exact results

Oleksandr Gamayun, Oleg Valentinovich Lychkovskiy

A mobile impurity particle immersed in a quantum fluid forms a polaron - a quasiparticle consisting of the impurity and a local disturbance of the fluid around it. We ask what happens to a one-dimensional polaron after a kick, i.e. an abrupt application of a force that instantly delivers a finite impulse to the impurity. In the framework of an integrable model describing an impurity in a one-dimensional gas of fermions or hard-core bosons, we calculate the distribution of the polaron momentum established when the post-kick relaxation is over. A remarkable feature of this distribution is a two-sided power-law singularity. It emerges due to one of two processes. In the first process, the whole impulse is transferred to the polaron, without creating phonon-like excitations of the fluid. In the second process, the impulse is shared between the polaron and the center-of-mass motion of the fluid, again without creating any fluid excitations. The latter process is, in fact, a Bragg reflection at the edge of the emergent Brillouin zone. We carefully analyze the conditions for each of the two processes. The asymptotic form of the distribution in the vicinity of the singularity is derived.

Repulsive Polarons in One-Dimensional Fermi Gases*

Ya-Dong Song, Sachin Barthwal

Abstract Using the variational method, we study the properties of a spin-down impurity immersed in a one-dimensional (1D) spin-up Fermi sea. With repulsive interactions between them, the impurity is dressed up by surrounding particles in Fermi sea and forms a polaron. We clearly calculate the binding energy, effective mass, momentum distribution, Tan contact, and pair correlation. Even in strong repulsive regimes, the results can agree with the exact Bethe Ansatz results. The repulsive polaron energy E + is below Fermi energy E F and no negative effective masses are found in whole interaction regimes, unequal masses polarons are also calculated. We show a clear momentum distribution and calculate the Tan contact from three different aspects. Furthermore, we explore the particle-hole excitation and find that the hole terms in Fermi sea have a great influence on the polaron energy and contact in repulsive regime. These results show that the variational method can still be used effectively in 1D repulsive polaron system .

Polaron spectra and edge singularities for correlated flat bands

Dimitri Pimenov

Single- and two-particle spectra of a single immobile impurity immersed in a fermionic bath can be computed exactly and are characterized by divergent power laws (edge singularities). Here we present the leading lattice correction to this canonical problem by embedding both impurity and bath fermions in bands with nonvanishing Bloch band geometry, with the impurity band being flat. By analyzing generic Feynman diagrams, we pinpoint how the band geometry reduces the effective interaction which enters the power laws; we find that for weak lattice effects or small Fermi momenta, the leading correction is proportional to the Fermi energy times the sum of the quantum metrics of the bands. When only the bath fermion geometry is important, the results can be extended to large Fermi momenta and strong lattice effects and cross-validated by analysis of $S$-matrix eigenvalues. We numerically illustrate our results on the Lieb lattice and draw connections to various spectroscopy experiments.
