Singularity with and without disorder at AKLT points

Abstract

The Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) point of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain is a cornerstone example of a disorder point where short-range correlations become incommensurate, and correlation lengths and momenta are non-analytic. While the presence of singularities appears to be generic for AKLT points, we show that for a family of SU(N) models, the AKLT point is not a disorder point: It occurs entirely within an incommensurate phase yet the wave vector remains singular on both sides of the AKLT point. We conjecture that this new possibility is generic for models where the representation is not self-conjugate and the transfer matrix non-Hermitian, while for self-conjugate representations the AKLT points remain disorder points.

Singularity with and without disorder at Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki points

While the presence of singularities appears to be generic for AKLT points, we show that for a family of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ models, the AKLT point is not a disorder point: It occurs entirely within an incommensurate phase yet the wave vector remains singular on both sides of the AKLT point. We conjecture that this possibility is generic for models where the representation is not self-conjugate and the transfer matrix non-Hermitian, while for self-conjugate representations the AKLT points remain disorder points.

Phase transitions of a two-dimensional deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model

Nicholas Pomata, Ching-Yu Huang, Tzu-Chieh Wei

We study spin-2 deformed-AKLT models on the square lattice, specifically a two-parameter family of $O(2)$-symmetric ground-state wave functions as defined by Niggemann, Kl\"umper, and Zittartz, who found previously that the phase diagram consists of a N\'eel-ordered phase and a disordered phase which contains the AKLT point. Using tensor-network methods, we not only confirm the N\'eel phase but also find an XY phase with quasi-long-range order and a region adjacent to it, within the AKLT phase, with very large correlation length, and investigate the consequences of a perfectly factorizable point at the corner of that phase.

The Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki (AKLT) model

Ian K. Affleck

The Haldane conjecture (1983), which led to a Nobel prize for Duncan Haldane, was that half-integer spin chains are gapless while integer spin chains are gapped. Haldane made this observation by a mapping onto a non-linear $\sigma$-model at large spin. Gapless behavior for half-integer spin was proven rigorously by the Affleck–Lieb–Schultz–Mattis (ALSM) theorem. Gapped behavior for integer spin was demonstrated by an exactly solvable model known as Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki (AKLT) model (1987, 1988). In this review article, I will review the ALSM theorem and present results on the AKLT model. An important aspect of this model is that it has decoupled spin-$1/2$’s at the two ends with open boundary conditions. This was shown, by Kennedy (1990), to extend to the regular antiferromagnetic model. The first experimental demonstration of this behavior was in a paper by Hagiwara, Katsumata, Affleck, Halperin, and Renard (1990). I will review this experiment.

Models of impurities in valence-bond spin chains and ladders

Alexei K. Kolezhuk

We present the class of models of a nonmagnetic impurity in an S = 1/2 generalized ladder with an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type (AKLT-type) valence-bond ground state, and of an S = 1/2 impurity in the S = 1 AKLT chain. The ground state in the presence of impurity can be found exactly. The recently studied phenomenon of local enhancement of antiferromagnetic correlations around the impurity is absent for this family of models.

Novel families of SU(N) AKLT states with arbitrary self-conjugate edge states

Samuel Gozel, Didier Poilblanc, Ian K. Affleck +1 more

Using the Matrix Product State framework, we generalize the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) construction to one-dimensional spin liquids with global color SU(N) symmetry, finite correlation lengths, and edge states that can belong to any self-conjugate irreducible representation (irrep) of SU(N). In particular, SU(2) spin-1 AKLT states with edge states of arbitrary spin s=1/2,1,3/2,⋯ are constructed, and a general formula for their correlation length is given. Furthermore, we show how to construct local parent Hamiltonians for which these AKLT states are unique ground states. This enables us to study the stability of the edge states by interpolating between exact AKLT Hamiltonians. As an example, in the case of spin-1 physical degrees of freedom, it is shown that a quantum phase transition of central charge c=1 separates the Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phase with spin-1/2 edge states from a topologically trivial phase with spin-1 edge states. We also address some specificities of the generalization to SU(N) with N>2, in particular regarding the construction of parent Hamiltonians. For the AKLT state of the SU(3) model with the 3-box symmetric representation, we prove that the edge states are in the 8-dimensional adjoint irrep, and for the SU(3) model with adjoint irrep at each site, we are able to construct two different reflection-symmetric AKLT Hamiltonians, each with a unique ground state which is either even or odd under reflection symmetry and with edge states in the adjoint irrep. Finally, examples of two-column and adjoint physical irreps for SU(N) with N even and with edge states living in the antisymmetric irrep with N/2 boxes are given, with a conjecture about the general formula for their correlation lengths.

Kitaev meets Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki: Competing quantum disorder in spin-3/2 honeycomb systems

Sogen Ikegami, Kiyu Fukui, Rico Pohle +1 more

We investigate an S=3/2 quantum spin model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice that continuously interpolates between two paradigmatic quantum disordered states with distinct entanglement structures: the Kitaev quantum spin liquid and the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) valence bond solid. Combining classical, semi-classical, and exact diagonalization approaches, we map out the ground-state phase diagram and elucidate the role of quantum fluctuations across the entire parameter range. While classical and semi-classical frameworks predict noncoplanar orders competing with a collinear Néel state, we find these phases to be fragile: once full quantum fluctuations are included, they melt into a quantum-entangled state characterized by suppressed spin correlations and enhanced entanglement entropy. Our findings highlight how competition between qualitatively different quantum disordered phases provides a fertile playground for unconventional phases emerging from their interplay and quantum fluctuations.
