Abstract

In two spatial dimensions, vortex-vortex interactions approximately vary with the logarithm of the inter-vortex distance, making it possible to describe an ensemble of vortices as a Coulomb gas. We introduce a duality between vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) scalar Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and effective Maxwell's electrodynamics. Specifically, we address the general scenario of inhomogeneous, time-dependent BEC number density with dissipation or rotation. Starting from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), which describes the mean-field dynamics of a quasi-2D scalar BEC without dissipation, we show how to map vortices in a quasi-2D scalar BEC to 2D electrodynamics beyond the point-vortex approximation, even when dissipation is present or in a rotating system. The physical meaning of this duality is discussed.

Dissipative motion of vortices in spatially inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates

T. I. Zueva

A dissipative model of vortex motion within a two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation is studied. With the asymptotic coordination method of solutions, a system of ordinary first-order differential equations describing vortex motion in rotating Bose-Einstein condensate was derived. The model takes into account the effect of various external factors: magnetic trap frequencies, number of particles in the condensate, angular rotational velocity of the condensate, dissipation parameter, etc. In special cases of dissipation-free motion, the results are coordinated with the known results of other authors. The addition of dissipation generalizes the known equations and makes it possible to see the vortex motion to the equilibrium points and to define the equilibrium configurations of any number of vortices. The model is illustrated by a large number of examples.

Numerical Study of Vortex Interactions in Bose-Einstein Condensation

Yanzhi Zhang

The dynamics and interaction of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are investigated by using the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with/without an angular momentum rotation term. If all vortices have the same winding number, they would rotate around the trap center but never collide. In contrast, if the winding numbers are different, their interaction highly depends on the initial distance between vortex centers. The analytical results are presented to describe the dynamics of the vortex centers when β=0. While if β≠0, there is no analytical result but some conclusive numerical findings are provided for the further understanding of vortex interaction in BECs. Finally, the dynamic laws describing the relation of vortex interaction in nonrotating and rotating BECs are presented.

Dynamics of quantum vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate with two “holes”

V. P. Ruban

The dynamics of interacting quantum vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous Bose–Einstein condensate, whose equilibrium density vanishes at two points of the plane with a possible presence of an immobile vortex with a few circulation quanta at each point, has been considered in a hydrodynamic approximation. A special class of density profiles has been chosen, so that it proves possible to calculate analytically the velocity field produced by point vortices. The equations of motion have been given in a noncanonical Hamiltonian form. The theory has been generalized to the case where the condensate forms a curved quasi-two-dimensional shell in the three-dimensional space.

Vortex dynamics of rotating dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

R. Kishor Kumar, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the influence of dipole–dipole interaction on the formation of vortices in a rotating dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) of 52 Cr and 164 Dy atoms in quasi two-dimensional geometry. By numerically solving the corresponding time-dependent mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we show that the dipolar interaction enhances the number of vortices, while a repulsive contact interaction increases the stability of the vortices. Furthermore, an ordered vortex lattice of a relatively large number of vortices is found in a strongly dipolar BEC.

Solitary Vortex Dynamics of 2D Bose-Einstein Condensates with Higher-Order Nonlinear Interactions

Huiping Ou, Zhijie Chen, Ying Wang +3 more

For study of Continuous matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates in nonlinear and quantum atom optics, the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) is chosen as the reliable model for studying the dynamics of vortices in the framework of mean-field theory. In related problems in several recent studies showing that higher-order interrelationships are an indispensable component of the GPE even at the mean-field level, by numerically estimating the vortex dynamics variables. In this paper, derive the vortex soliton solutions using the variational method and investigate the effect of higher-order nonlinear corrections on the behavior of the vortex dynamics, which are shown to have an important impact on the vortex dynamics behavior.

Numerical studies on vortices in rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

R. Kishor Kumar, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the formation and dynamics of vortices in quasi two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We solve the time dependent two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation by using a combined split-step Crank-Nicolson (SSCN) and Fast Fourier-Transform (FFT) based numerical scheme and investigate the vortex dynamics in dipolar BECs trapped with harmonic and optical lattice potentials. The consequence of dipole-dipole interaction on vortex nucleation and number of vortices has been analysed. We observe that the breaking of symmetry due to anisotropic dipolar interaction enormously increase the speed of creation of vortices.
