Abstract

Dysprosium atoms have proven to be a promising platform for quantum simulation due to their strong magnetic moment and high tunability of interactions. In this work, we propose dysprosium atoms for simulating the one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ Heisenberg model, which is known to have a rich phase diagram including the famous Haldane phase. To realize the model, we make use of the strong dipolar exchange interactions that naturally occur in the ground state of dysprosium due to its large electron angular momentum of $J$ = 8. To implement spin-1 particles, we encode the spin degree of freedom into three Zeeman sublevels, which are energetically isolated by applying a magnetic field. Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we analyze the ground-state properties of the resulting effective model. We find that a chain of fermionic dysprosium atoms in a suitable magnetic field can form a Haldane state with the characteristic spin-1/2 edge modes. Furthermore, we discuss the use of AC Stark shifts and Raman-type schemes for bosonic dysprosium to isolate effective spin-1 systems and to increase the tunability of model parameters.

Computational studies on the static and dynamical properties of one dimensional integer spin quantum magnets

Ernest Teng Siang Ong

One dimensional quantum magnets have always been an active area of research due to their experimental realizability and the rich physics that they offer. By including geometrical frustration and additional interactions, it leads to even more novel and exotic quantum phases. In this thesis, we present the results of our investigations conducted by extending the quantum systems to spin–1. We conducted static, topological and dynamical calculations numerically on the spin–1 Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in a uniform magnetic field in the form of a spin–1 Heisenberg chain in a helical magnetic field as well as the spin–1 Heisenberg model on the spin diamond and orthogonal dimer lattices. For the spin–1 Heisenberg chain in a helical field, we obtained the phase diagram using the density matrix renormalization group method and showed conclusively that the helical field destroys any topological order. We also obtained the dynamical spin structure factor spectra to study the magnon band structures and the softening of the modes near phase transitions. We then investigated the spin–1 Heisenberg model on the spin diamond and orthogonal dimer lattices using both exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method. We obtained the phase diagrams for both systems and explicitly calculated the magnetization, static spin structure and topological order of the different phases. Similar to the spin–1 Heisenberg chain in a helical magnetic field, we also obtained the dynamical spin structure factor spectra to study the characteristics of the lowest excitation occurring in both quantum systems.

Bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain undergoing quadratic Zeeman effect

Gabriele De Chiara, Maciej Lewenstein, Anna Sanpera

The Heisenberg model for spin-1 bosons in one dimension presents many different quantum phases, including the famous topological Haldane phase. Here we study the robustness of such phases in front of a SU(2) symmetry-breaking field as well as the emergence of unique phases. Previous studies have analyzed the effect of such uniaxial anisotropy in some restricted relevant points of the phase diagram. Here we extend those studies and present the complete phase diagram of the spin-1 chain with uniaxial anisotropy. To this aim, we employ the density-matrix renormalization group together with analytical approaches. The complete phase diagram can be realized using ultracold spinor gases in the Mott insulator regime under a quadratic Zeeman effect.

Spin-1 Haldane Phase in a Chain of Rydberg Atoms

Johannes Mögerle, Katharina Brechtelsbauer, A. T. Gea-Caballero +7 more

We present a protocol to implement a spin-1 chain in Rydberg systems using three Rydberg states close to a Förster resonance. In addition to dipole-dipole interactions, strong van der Waals interactions naturally appear due to the presence of the Förster resonance and give rise to a highly tunable Hamiltonian. The resulting phase diagram is studied using the infinite density-matrix renormalization group and reveals a highly robust Haldane phase—a prime example of a symmetry-protected topological phase. We find experimentally accessible parameters to probe the Haldane phase in current Rydberg systems, and demonstrate an efficient adiabatic preparation scheme. This paves the way to probe the remarkable properties of spin fractionalization in the Haldane phase.

Spin-1 Heisenberg chain and the one-dimensional fermion gas

Jenő Sólyom, JUSSI TIMONEN

The composite-spin representation of the spin-1 Heisenberg chain is used to transform it through the Jordan-Wigner transformation to the one-dimensional fermion gas. To properly include the xy couplings between spins, we also consider the bosonized version of the fermion model. Phase diagrams deduced from the two versions of the fermion model are compared against numerical results for finite Heisenberg chains. One of the symmetries of the spin model is lost in the fermionization, and this leads to a topologically incorrect phase diagram in at least one part of the parameter space. There are clear indications of significant coupling of spin and charge degrees of freedom in the fermion model and of strong renormalization of the coupling constants in the continuum limit. The existence of the Haldane gap is discussed in connection with these results.

Phase diagram of the anisotropic spin-2 XXZ model: Infinite-system density matrix renormalization group study

Jonas A. Kjäll, Michael P. Zaletel, Roger S. K. Mong +2 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum spin-2 XXZ chain in the presence of on-site anisotropy using a matrix-product state based infinite-system density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) algorithm. One of the interests in this system is in connecting the highly quantum-mechanical spin-1 phase diagram with the classical $S=\ensuremath{\infty}$ phase diagram. Several of the recent advances within DMRG make it possible to perform a detailed analysis of the whole phase diagram. We consider different types of on-site anisotropies, which allows us to establish the validity of the following statements: (1) the spin-2 model can be tuned into a phase, which is equivalent to the ``topologically nontrivial'' spin-1 Haldane phase, and (2) the spin-2 Haldane phase at the isotropic Heisenberg point is adiabatically connected to the ``trivial'' large-$D$ phase, with a continuous change of the Hamiltonian parameters. Furthermore, we study the spin-3 XXZ chain to help explain the development of the classical phase diagram. We present details on how to use the iDMRG method to map out the phase diagram and include an extensive discussion of the numerical methods.

Magnetic phase diagrams of the spin- 12 Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain: Emergence of a Haldane phase

Katsuhiro Morita, Shigetoshi Sota, Takami Tohyama

Frustrated one-dimensional quantum spin systems are known to exhibit a variety of quantum ground states due to the effects of quantum fluctuations and frustrations. In a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome-strip chain, which is one of the frustrated one-dimensional spin systems, many quantum phases have been found. However, the magnetic phase diagrams of the kagome-strip chain under magnetic field have not been fully understood. We construct magnetic phase diagrams at 0, 1/5, 3/10, 1/3, 2/5, 7/15, 3/5, and 4/5 magnetization ratio in the kagome-strip chain and investigate magnetic properties in each phase using the density matrix renormalization group method. We find 15 magnetization-plateau phases, one of which is equivalent to the spin-1 Haldane phase.
