Abstract

We take a qualitative comparative look at quantum and classical quartic anharmonic oscillators. It has been shown that the behavior of the quantum anharmonic oscillator mimics that of the classical anharmonic oscillators with the structurally same Hamiltonian in the coherent state basis of the harmonic oscillators. The associated equation of motion allows us to use Lindstet-Poincare perturbation method to compute the classical frequency of the oscillation order by order, by taking care of its dependence on amplitude and the quantum corrections. We also derive a bound for periodicity of such oscillations in both the classical and quantum cases.

Classical and quantum behavior of the harmonic and the quartic oscillators

David Brizuela

In a previous paper a formalism to analyze the dynamical evolution of classical and quantum probability distributions in terms of their moments was presented. Here the application of this formalism to the system of a particle moving on a potential is considered in order to derive physical implications about the classical limit of a quantum system. The complete set of harmonic potentials is considered, which includes the particle under a uniform force, as well as the harmonic and the inverse harmonic oscillators. In addition, as an example of anharmonic system, the pure quartic oscillator is analyzed. Classical and quantum moments corresponding to stationary states of these systems are analytically obtained without solving any differential equation. Finally, dynamical states are also considered in order to study the differences between their classical and quantum evolution.

Heisenberg equation and constants of the motion for an anharmonic oscillator in the high-frequency limit

L DeFalco, R. Mignani, Roberto Scipioni

Using the best approximation of the time evolution operator of a quartic oscillator in the high-frequency limit, we derive its equation of the motion in the Heisenberg picture and show that such an anharmonic oscillator admits a wider class of constants of the motion than the standard harmonic oscillator.

On the nonlinear dynamics of a quantum oscillator

С. В. Сазонов

A quantum version of the asymptotic approach in the theory of anharmonic oscillator motion is proposed. It is shown that quantum transitions from the most likely stationary state to the nearest quantum level correspond to the classical Eigen frequency. This frequency depends on the oscillator amplitude. Quantum corrections to the motion of a classical nonlinear oscillator are determined.

Investigating Single Quantum Anharmonic Oscillator with Perturbation Theory

Büşra Adalı, Ferhat Nutku

In this article, for pedagogical purposes we have discussed the application of nondegenerate perturbation theory up to the third order to compute energy eigenvalues and wave functions for the quantum anharmonic oscillator. Energy levels of a single quartic oscillator for 𝜆 values in range of 0.1-1 are given. Perturbed and non-perturbed wave functions of the levels up to the fourth excited level are compared. Ground, first and second excited energy levels are also calculated by applying finite differences method and, results are compared with the ones obtained via perturbation theory. It is found that perturbation theory gives comparable results only for a small 𝜆 parameter and for the ground state. The quartic term in the Hamiltonian of the anharmonic oscillator leads to a more effective confinement of the particle which is deduced from the plots of wavefunctions and probability distributions. Meanwhile, the number of zero crossing nodes of the wavefunctions increases as the energy level increases, which is an expected result for both the harmonic and anharmonic oscillator.

An approach to quantum anharmonic oscillators via Lie algebra

Mojtaba Jafarpour, Davood Afshar

We present a new Lie algebraic method to study the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of quantum anharmonic oscillators. We consider the Hamiltonians for the simple harmonic and anharmonic oscillator as the two generators of a Lie algebra, whose other generators may be found exactly or up to any order of the parameter involved. Speciflcally, the closed commutator algebra for the quartic anharmonic oscillator is established in a perturbation sense. An element of this Lie group, turning out to be the four-photon operator, transforms the quartic anharmonic oscillator Hamiltonian to the harmonic one in a perturbation sense; thus, facilitating the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the former.

The 1/N-expansion, Quantum-Classical Correspondence and Nonclassical States Generation in Dissipative Higher-Order Anharmonic Oscillators

K. N. Alekseev, Jan Peřina

We develop a method for the determination of the dynamics of dissipative quantum systems in the limit of large number of quanta N , based on the 1/ N -expansion of Heidmann et al. (1985 Opt. Commun. 54 189) and the quantum-classical correspondence. Using this method, we find analytically the dynamics of nonclassical states generation in the higher-order anharmonic dissipative oscillators for an arbitrary temperature of a reservoir. We show that the quantum correction to the classical motion increases with time quadratically up to some maximal value, which is dependent on the degree of nonlinearity and a damping constant, and then it decreases. Similarities and differences with the corresponding behavior of the quantum corrections to the classical motion in the Hamiltonian chaotic systems are discussed. We also compare our results obtained for some limiting cases with the results obtained by using other semiclassical tools and discuss the conditions for validity of our approach.
