Abstract

We establish a holographic duality between d -dimensional mixed-state symmetry-protected topological (mSPT) phases and ( d + 1 ) -dimensional subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) states. Specifically, we show that the reduced density matrix of the boundary layer of a ( d + 1 ) -dimensional SSPT state with subsystem symmetry S and global symmetry G corresponds to a d -dimensional mSPT phase with strong S and weak G symmetries. Conversely, we demonstrate that the wave function of an SSPT state can be constructed by replicating the density matrix of the corresponding lower-dimensional mSPT phase. This mapping links the density matrix in lower dimensions to the entanglement properties of higher-dimensional wave functions, providing an approach for analyzing nonlinear quantities and quantum information metrics in mixed-state systems. Our duality offers a new perspective for studying intrinsic mSPT phases that are unique to open quantum systems, without pure-state analogues. We show that strange correlators and twisted Rényi- N correlators can diagnose these nontrivial phases and we explore their connection to strange correlators in pure-state SSPT phases. Furthermore, we discuss several implications of this holographic duality, including a method for preparing intrinsic mSPT phases through the duality.

Entanglement Holography in Quantum Phases via Twisted Rényi-N Correlators

Pablo Sala, Frank Pollmann, Masaki Oshikawa +1 more

We introduce a holographic framework for the entanglement Hamiltonian in symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with area-law entanglement, whose reduced density matrix $ρ\propto e^{-H_e}$ can be treated as a lower-dimensional mixed state. By replicating $ρ$, we reconstruct the fixed-point SPT wavefunction, establishing an exact correspondence between the bulk strange correlator of the (d+1)-dimensional SPT state and the twisted Rényi-N operator of the d-dimensional reduced density matrix. Notably, the reduced density matrix exhibits long-range or quasi-long-range order along the replica direction, revealing a universal entanglement feature in SPT phases. As a colloary, we generalized the framework of twisted Rényi-N correlator to thermal states and open quantum systems, providing an alternative formulation of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, applicable to both closed and open systems. Finally, we extend our protocol to mixed-state SPT phases and introduce new quantum information metrics -- twisted Rényi-N correlators of the surgery operator -- to characterize the topology of mixed states.

Mixed-state Phases from Higher-order SSPTs with Kramers-Wannier Symmetry

Aswin Parayil Mana, Zijian Song, Fei Yan +1 more

Mixed-state phases have recently attracted significant attention as a generalization beyond their pure-state counterparts. Prominent examples include mixed-state symmetry-protected topological (mSPT) phases and the strong-to-weak symmetry breaking (SWSSB) phases. It has been shown recently that mSPT phases admit a holographic dual description in terms of higher-order subsystem SPT phases. In this work, we investigate the mixed-state phases obtained by tracing out the bulk degrees of freedom of higher-order subsystem SPT phases protected by non-invertible symmetries. We find that the resulting mixed states exhibit the coexistence of the symmetry-protected topological order and SWSSB. We also use the interface as a probe to characterize the mixed state phases, and specifically, when there is no local modification to preserve the symmetries across the interface, the two sides of the interface are in distinct phases.

Entanglement holography in quantum phases via twisted Rényi- N correlators

Abstract We introduce a holographic framework for the entanglement Hamiltonian in symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with area-law entanglement, whose reduced density matrix (RDM) ρ ∝ e − H e can be treated as a lower-dimensional mixed state. By replicating ρ , we reconstruct the fixed-point SPT wavefunction, establishing an exact correspondence between the bulk strange correlator of the ( d + 1 ) -dimensional SPT state and the twisted Rényi- N operator of the d -dimensional RDM. Notably, the RDM exhibits long-range or quasi-long-range order along the replica direction, revealing a universal entanglement feature in SPT phases. Intrinsic symmetry-protected topological mixed state from modulated symmetries and hierarchical structure of boundary anomaly

Yizhi You, Masaki Oshikawa

We introduce a class of intrinsic symmetry-protected topological mixed state (mSPT) in open quantum systems that feature modulated symmetries, such as dipole and subsystem symmetries. Intriguingly, these mSPT phases cannot be realized as the ground states of a gapped Hamiltonian under thermal equilibrium. The microscopic form of the density matrix characterizing these intrinsic mixed-state SPT ensembles is constructed using solvable coupled-wire models that incorporate quenched disorder or quantum channels. A detailed comparison of the hierarchical structure of boundary anomalies in both pure and mixed states is presented, utilizing flux insertion and Laughlin's charge pumping arguments. Finally, we explore the salient features of boundary anomalies in the mixed-state ensemble, which can be detected through the R\'enyi-$N$ correlation function of charged observables.

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Constraints for Quantum Channels: A Spacetime-Duality View

Sarang Gopalakrishnan, Yu-Jie Liu, Tsung-Cheng Lu +2 more

Quantum anomalies strongly constrain the possible behavior of many-body systems. A prime example is the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem, which relates UV symmetry and filling constraints to IR features of the energy spectrum and ground-state structure. Here, we ask how LSM constraints shape dynamical signatures and temporal correlations in open quantum systems. Using a spacetime duality, we show that the Liouvillian of a $d$-dimensional repeated quantum channel with a mixed anomaly between strong $S$ and weak $G$ symmetry can be mapped to a $(d{+}1)$-dimensional mixed-state symmetry-protected topological (mSPT) phase. Under this correspondence, the initial and steady states of the channel are identified with boundary states of the higher-dimensional mSPT in the presence of bulk projection. We further introduce the twisted Renyi-$N$ correlator (TRNC) as a probe of temporal correlations in the channel and demonstrate that it is dual to the mSPT strange correlator, providing a direct bulk-boundary route to diagnose long-range temporal order implied by the LSM anomaly. Finally, we identify the \textit{Liouvillian singular spectrum}, rather than the Liouvillian spectrum itself, as a more fundamental diagnostic of quantum anomalies, and show that it is dual to the operator entanglement spectrum of the mSPT.

Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases of Mixed States in the Doubled Space

Ruochen Ma, Alex Turzillo

The interplay of symmetry and topology in quantum many-body mixed states has recently garnered significant interest. In a phenomenon not seen in pure states, mixed states can exhibit average symmetries—symmetries that act on component states while leaving the ensemble invariant. In this work, we systematically characterize symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of short-range entangled (SRE) mixed states of spin systems—protected by both average and exact symmetries—by studying their pure Choi states in a doubled Hilbert space, where the familiar notions and tools for SRE and SPT pure states apply. This advantage of the doubled space comes with a price: extra symmetries as well as subtleties around how hermiticity and positivity of the original density matrix constrain the possible SPT invariants. Nevertheless, the doubled-space perspective allows us to obtain a systematic classification of mixed-state SPT (MSPT) phases. We also investigate the robustness of MSPT invariants under symmetric finite-depth quantum channels, the bulk-boundary correspondence for MSPT phases, and the consequences of the MSPT invariants for the separability of mixed states and the symmetry-protected sign problem. In addition to MSPT phases, we study the patterns of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of mixed states, including the phenomenon of exact-to-average SSB, and the order parameters that detect them. Mixed-state SSB is related to an ingappability constraint on symmetric Lindbladian dynamics.
