Abstract

While the entanglement entropy of a single subregion in quantum field theory is formally infinite and requires regularization, certain combinations of entropies are perfectly finite in the limit that the regulator is removed, the mutual information being a common example. For generic regulator schemes, such as a holographic calculation with a uniform radial cutoff, these quantities show nontrivial dependence on the regulator at finite values of the cutoff. We investigate a holographic regularization scheme defined in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space constructed from , curves in two-dimensional hyperbolic space perpendicular to all geodesics approaching a single point on the boundary, that leads to finite information measures that are cutoff independent, even at finite values of the regulator. We describe a broad class of such information measures, and describe how the field theory dual to the horocycle regulator is inherently nonlocal. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Holographic entanglement entropy is cutoff-covariant

Jonathan Sorce

Abstract In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, it is often convenient to regulate infinite quantities in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes by introducing a sharp cutoff at some finite, large value of a particular radial coordinate. This procedure is a priori coordinate dependent, and may not be well-motivated in full, covariant general relativity; however, the fact that physically meaningful quantities such as the entanglement entropy can be obtained by such a regulation procedure suggests some underlying covariance. In this paper, we provide a careful treatment of the radial cutoff procedure for computing holographic entanglement entropy in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We prove two results that are frequently assumed in the literature, but that have not been carefully addressed: (i) that the choice of a “globally minimal surface” among several extremal candidates is independent of the choice of regulator, and (ii) that finite CFT quantities such as the mutual information which involve “divergence-cancelling” sums of entanglement entropies are well-defined under the usual prescription for computing covariant holographic entanglement entropy. Our results imply that the “globally minimal surface” prescription for computing the holographic entanglement entropy is well-posed from the perspective of general relativity, and thus support the widely-held belief that this is the correct prescription for identifying the entanglement wedge of a boundary subregion in AdS/CFT. We also comment on the geometric source of state-dependent divergences in the holographic entanglement entropy, and identify precisely the regime of validity of the “vacuum subtraction” protocol for regulating infinite entanglement entropies in arbitrary states by comparing them to the entanglement entropies of identical regions in the vacuum. Our proofs make use of novel techniques for the covariant analysis of extremal surfaces, which are explained in detail and may find use more broadly in the study of holographic entanglement entropy.

Entanglement entropy of spherical domains in anti–de Sitter space

Pavel Krtouš, Andrei Zelnikov

It was proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi that the entanglement entropy in conformal field theory (CFT) is related through the AdS/CFT correspondence to the area of a minimal surface in the bulk. We apply this holographic geometrical method of calculating the entanglement entropy to study the vacuum case of a CFT which is holographically dual to empty anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. We present all possible minimal surfaces spanned on one or two spherical boundaries at AdS infinity. We give exact analytical expressions for the regularized areas of these surfaces and identify finite renormalized quantities. In the case of two disjoint boundaries the existence of two different phases of the entanglement entropy is confirmed. A trivial phase corresponds to two disconnected minimal surfaces, while the other one corresponds to a tube connecting the spherical boundaries. A transition between these phases is reminiscent of the finite temperature deconfinement transition in the CFT on the boundary. The exact analytical results are thus consistent with previous numerical and approximate computations. We also briefly discuss the character of a spacetime extension of the minimal surface spanned on two uniformly accelerated boundaries.

Aspects of Hyperscaling Violating geometries at finite cutoff

Salomeh Khoeini-Moghaddam, Farzad Omidi, Chandrima Paul

Abstract Recently, it was proposed that a $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformed CFT is dual to a gravity theory in an asymptotically AdS spacetime at finite radial cutoff. Motivated by this proposal, we explore some aspects of Hyperscaling Violating geometries at finite cutoff and zero temperature. We study holographic entanglement entropy, mutual information (HMI) and entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) for entangling regions in the shape of strips. It is observed that the HMI shows interesting features in comparison to the very small cutoff case: it is a decreasing function of the cutoff. It is finite when the distance between the two entangling regions goes to zero. The location of its phase transition also depends on the cutoff, and decreases by increasing the cutoff. On the other hand, the EWCS is a decreasing function of the cutoff. It does not show a discontinuous phase transition when the HMI undergoes a first-order phase transition. However, its concavity changes. Moreover, it is finite when the distance between the two strips goes to zero. Furthermore, it satisfies the bound EW ≥ $$ \frac{I}{2} $$ I 2 for all values of the cutoff.

Quantum Information Approaches to Holographic Dualities

A. Jahn

The AdS/CFT correspondence, a remarkable duality between certain gravitational theories in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime and quantum field theories with conformal symmetry (CFT), has had a profound effect on the development of theoretical physics in the past two decades. Recently, many connections of AdS/CFT to quantum information theory have been found, in particular by providing gravitationally dual descriptions of various entanglement measures. Understanding these manifestions of AdS/CFT --- or more generally, the conjectured holographic principle encompassing it --- requires the combination of tools from both high-energy theory and quantum information physics. In this cumulative thesis, the convergence between these two fields is approached from two fronts: First, by calculations within the dual gravitational theory, and second, using a tensor network ansatz to describe the quantum states suspected to possess such a gravitational description. In the first approach, using the gravitational side of AdS/CFT, entanglement entropies of complicated 2+1-dimensional excited CFTs are computed, thus showing how the holographic approach provides access to systems previously out of reach of practical methods, while introducing new numerical methods that this approach necessitates. The second approach is given by tensor networks, a highly successful ansatz for computing properties of one- and two-dimensional quantum systems. Efficiently computable classes of tensor networks are tested in their ability to represent simple holographic systems, successfully reproducing both hyperbolic geometrical features as well as critical boundary states. In addition, the general properties of tensor networks on regular hyperbolic tesselations are considered, leading to new connections to models not previously considered in the context of holography. This interplay of different approaches to quantum information holography showcases the richness of this new field and suggests that a wide range of physical phenomena is accessible via the new tools now at our disposal.

Holographic coarse-grained states and the necessity of perfect entanglement

Yi-Yu Lin, Jun Zhang

In the framework of the holographic principle, focusing on a central concept, conditional mutual information, we construct a class of coarse-grained states, which are intuitively connected to a family of thread configurations. These coarse-grained states characterize the entanglement structure of holographic systems at a coarse-grained level. Importantly, these coarse-grained states can be used to further reveal nontrivial requirements for the holographic entanglement structure. Specifically, we employ these coarse-grained states to probe the entanglement entropies of disconnected regions and the entanglement wedge cross section dual to the inherent correlation in a bipartite mixed state. The investigations demonstrate the necessity of perfect tensor state entanglement. Moreover, in a certain sense, our work establishes the equivalence between the holographic entanglement of purification and the holographic balanced partial entropy. We also construct a thread configuration with the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) structure, reexamining the connection between the MERA structure and kinematic space. Black hole as a multipartite entangler: multi-entropy in AdS${}_3$/CFT${}_2$

Takanori Anegawa, Shota Suzuki, Kotaro Tamaoka

We study multipartite entanglement in typical pure states holographically dual to pure BTZ black holes, using multi-entropy and its ``genuine'' version. In the bulk, these quantities are computed by minimal geodesic networks (so-called Steiner trees). We find that at sufficiently high temperature, the genuine tripartite multi-entropy exhibits a volume-law scaling in sharp contrast to vacuum AdS$_3$, where the genuine contribution is universal and size-independent. Moreover, we find another phase: once one subsystem exceeds half of the total system, the leading genuine tripartite entanglement vanishes and reduces to that for global AdS${}_3$. This transition is indeed consistent with recent arguments for distillable EPR pairs in tripartite Haar-random states. Motivated by finite-cutoff holography, we further study the radial cutoff dependence of multi-entropy and show that genuine multi-entropy acquires nontrivial size dependence even for the tripartite case in AdS${}_3$. As a byproduct, we also observe an intriguing ``area-law'' contribution to multi-entropy that is relevant to vacuum AdS${}_3$.
