Quantum information and the C-theorem in de Sitter

Abstract

Information-theoretic methods have led to significant advances in nonperturbative quantum field theory in flat space. In this work, we show that these ideas can be generalized to field theories in a fixed de Sitter space. Focusing on 1+1-dimensional field theories, we derive a boosted strong subadditivity inequality in de Sitter, and show that it implies a C-theorem for renormalization group flows. Additionally, using the relative entropy, we establish a Lorentzian bound on the entanglement and thermal entropies for a field theory inside the static patch. Finally, we discuss possible connections with recent developments using unitarity methods.

Irreversibility of quantum field theory in de Sitter: the C, F and A theorems

Nicolás Abate, Gonzalo Torroba

We prove the C, F and A irreversibility theorems in de Sitter spacetime for quantum field theories that are obtained as renormalization group flows from ultraviolet conformal fixed points. The proof is based on strong subadditivity of the entanglement entropy, de Sitter invariance, and the Markov property of conformal field theory.

Entanglement and Renormalization Group Irreversibility of Quantum Field Theory in AdS

Nicolás Abate, Ignacio Salazar, Gonzalo Torroba

We study nonperturbative aspects of quantum field theory (QFT) in rigid anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetime using quantum information theoretic methods. While irreversibility of renormalization group (RG) flows is well established in flat space, it is not obvious whether it persists in AdS, where negative curvature and an asymptotic timelike boundary significantly modify infrared dynamics. Using strong subadditivity and AdS invariance, we derive an entropic second-order differential inequality for the difference between the vacuum entanglement entropy of a QFT and that of its ultraviolet fixed point, evaluated for spherical bulk regions. This inequality allows us to define RG charges that measure the relevant number of degrees of freedom, and we prove the irreversibility of the RG in $2,\,3,$ and $4$ spacetime dimensions. We further analyze free scalar and fermion theories in AdS, developing lattice formulations adapted to the geometry and computing entanglement entropies and RG charges. In AdS$_2$, we obtain analytic results for a massive Dirac fermion and compare them with numerical lattice calculations. These examples illustrate the general irreversibility theorem and clarify the distinction between conformal and massive theories in AdS.

Renormalization group flow of entanglement entropy on spheres

Omer Ben-Ami, Dean Carmi, Michael Smolkin

We explore entanglement entropy of a cap-like region for a generic quantum field theory residing in the Bunch-Davies vacuum on de Sitter space. Entanglement entropy in our setup is identical with the thermal entropy in the static patch of de Sitter, and we derive a simple relation between the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor trace and the RG flow of entanglement entropy. In particular, renormalization of the bare couplings and logarithmic divergence of the entanglement entropy are interrelated in our setup. We confirm our findings by recovering known universal contributions for a free field theory deformed by a mass operator as well as obtain correct universal behaviour at the fixed points. Simple examples of entanglement entropy flows are elaborated in d=2,3,4. Inthreedimensionswefindthatwhiletherenormalizedentanglemententropy is stationary at the fixed points, it is not monotonic. We provide a computational evidence that the universal ‘area law’ for a conformally coupled scalar is different from the known result in the literature, and argue that this difference survives in the limit of flat space. Finally, we carry out the spectral decomposition of entanglement entropy flow and discuss its application to the F-theorem.

Irreversibility in quantum field theories with boundaries

Horacio Casini, Ignacio Salazar Landea, Gonzalo Torroba

Abstract We study conformal field theories with boundaries, and their boundary renormalization group (RG) flows, using methods from quantum information theory. Positivity of the relative entropy, together with unitarity and Lorentz invariance, give rise to bounds that characterize the irreversibility of such flows. This generalizes the recently proved entropic g-theorem to higher dimensions. In 2 + 1 dimensions with a boundary, we prove the entropic b-theorem — the decrease of the two-dimensional Weyl anomaly under boundary RG flows. In higher dimensions, the bound implies that the leading area coefficient of the entanglement entropy induced by the defect decreases along the flow. Our proof unifies these properties, and provides an information-theoretic interpretation in terms of the distinguishability between the short distance and long distance states. Finally, we establish a sum rule for the change in the area term in theories with boundaries, which could have implications for models with localized gravity.

The g-theorem and quantum information theory

Horacio Casini, Ignacio Salazar Landea, Gonzalo Torroba

We study boundary renormalization group flows between boundary conformal field theories in 1 + 1 dimensions using methods of quantum information theory. We define an entropic g-function for theories with impurities in terms of the relative entanglement entropy, and we prove that this g-function decreases along boundary renormalization group flows. This entropic g-theorem is valid at zero temperature, and is independent from the g-theorem based on the thermal partition function. We also discuss the mutual information in boundary RG flows, and how it encodes the correlations between the impurity and bulk degrees of freedom. Our results provide a quantum-information understanding of (boundary) RG flow as increase of distinguishability between the UV fixed point and the theory along the RG flow.

Proof of the entropic ccc-theorem

Jonah Kudler-Flam

We prove an entropic $c$-theorem in two dimensions by constructing a $c$-function from the mutual information between spacelike separated wedges, defined through the relative entropy. The proof follows Casini and Huerta's, with strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy replaced by increasing differences of the mutual information, which we prove directly in the continuum from the split property and standard properties of relative entropy. The benefit of relative entropy is that every quantity we use is finite and no cutoff ever needs to be introduced. The assumptions of the theorem are only the standard axioms of algebraic quantum field theory, the split property with finite mutual information across a gap (both implied by modular $p$-nuclearity), and a finite ultraviolet bound on the resulting $c$-functions. We also note that, formally, the $c$-function is proportional to the minimal averaged null energy of a state that reproduces the vacuum correlations between the two wedges.
