Abstract

By employing determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate a checkerboard lattice with next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ as the frustration-control parameter, which exhibits an energetically partial flat band in the system. Our numerical simulation identifies the dominant pairing symmetry of the checkerboard lattice Hubbard model, and we reveal the competition between the $d$ wave and the $d+is$ wave in the parameter space of the electron filling $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and the frustration control parameter ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t$. To ensure the reliability and accuracy of our results, we evaluate the sign problem. We also find that the spin susceptibility, the effective pairing interactions of different pairing symmetries, and the superconducting instability are enhanced as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, demonstrating that superconductivity is driven by strong electron-electron correlation. Our work provides a further understanding of pairing symmetry in the Hubbard model and improves prospects for exploring rich correlated behaviors in frustrated systems.

Strong ferromagnetic fluctuations in a doped checkerboard lattice

Yue Pan, Runyu Ma, Tianxing Ma

Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we study the magnetic susceptibility in the parameter space of the on-site interaction $U$, temperature $T$, electron filling $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}$, and the frustration control parameter ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ within the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. It is shown that the system exhibits stable and strong ferromagnetic fluctuations about the electron filling $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}\ensuremath{\ge}1.2$ for different ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, and the ferromagnetic susceptibility is strongly enhanced by the increasing interaction and decreasing temperature. We also discuss the sign problem to clarify which parameter region is accessible and reliable. Our findings not only demonstrate important implications for modulating magnetism in the checkerboard lattice, but will also provide a theoretical platform for a flat-band model that demonstrates a variety of physical properties.

Effects of nonlocal interactions on s- and d-wave superconducting correlations in the extended Hubbard model

Pavol Farkašovský

We investigate the influence of nonlocal interactions on superconducting correlations within the extended Hubbard model. In addition to the on-site Coulomb interaction and nearest-neighbor hopping, we include next-nearest-neighbor hopping together with several physically relevant nonlocal terms, namely nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction, correlated hopping, exchange interaction, and pair hopping. Using Lanczos exact diagonalization on a $4\times4$ cluster, supported by projector quantum Monte Carlo simulations for selected parameter regimes, we analyze pairing correlations in both the s- and d-wave channels. We demonstrate that nonlocal interactions exert a highly nontrivial and symmetry-dependent influence on superconducting correlations. While the on-site repulsion in cooperation with next-nearest-neighbor hopping enhances d-wave pairing tendencies, correlated hopping and nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction strongly promote s-wave correlations, whereas exchange and pair-hopping interactions can efficiently suppress superconductivity beyond relatively small critical strengths. When all nonlocal interactions are considered simultaneously, the resulting phase diagrams reveal a complex interplay and competition between different pairing symmetries. Our results highlight the crucial role of extended interactions in shaping the pairing landscape of strongly correlated systems and demonstrate that a comprehensive treatment beyond the minimal Hubbard model is essential for a realistic description of unconventional superconductivity.

Drastic enhancement of d -wave superconductivity in an extended checkerboard Hubbard model

Kai Cheng, Shi-Chao Fang, Zhongbing Huang

Motivated by the recent discovery of anomalously strong nearest-neighbor attraction in the one-dimensional hole-doped cuprate ${\text{Ba}}_{2+x}{\text{Sr}}_{x}{\text{CuO}}_{3+\ensuremath{\delta}}$, we investigate the $d$-wave superconducting property of an extended checkerboard Hubbard model, which includes an intraplaquette nearest-neighbor attraction $V$. Our quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveal that, for small interplaquette hopping integral ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, $V$ induces a drastic enhancement of long-range $d$-wave pairing correlations in the parameter range of $0.0\ensuremath{\le}U\ensuremath{\le}6.0t$ ($t$ is the intraplaquette hopping integral) when the electron density lies between half-filling and quarter-filling. At $V=\ensuremath{-}0.4t$, one order of magnitude larger $d$-wave pairing correlations are observed compared to the ones at $V=0.0t$ and, more importantly, they exceed the values of the free electron system, signifying the existence of $d$-wave superconductivity. The exact diagonalization calculations on the $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ plaquette indicate that the enhancement of $d$-wave pairing correlations can be attributed to the $V$-induced enhancement of pair-binding energy. Our findings provide a new perspective on the realization of high-temperature $d$-wave superconductivity via the combination of nearest-neighbor attraction and electronic inhomogeneity.

Doping-induced crossovers between the dominant pairing correlations in the extended Hubbard model

Pavol Farkašovský, Lubomíra Regeciová

We examine the influence of hole doping on superconducting pairing symmetries in the two-dimensional Hubbard model extended by next-nearest-neighbor hopping, nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction, correlated hopping, exchange interaction and pair-hopping processes. Using Lanczos exact diagonalization supported by projector quantum Monte Carlo method, we calculate superconducting correlation functions corresponding to s-wave, extended s-wave, and d-wave pairing over a broad range of electron concentrations and interaction parameters. We find that hole doping acts as an efficient control parameter of superconducting pairing symmetry, giving rise to robust crossovers between the dominant pairing correlations. While extended s-wave pairing dominates throughout most of the overdoped regime, reducing the hole concentration progressively enhances d-wave correlations over large regions of the ground-state diagram. The critical doping associated with these crossovers depends strongly on the underlying interaction mechanism. In particular, correlated hopping and next-nearest-neighbor hopping substantially modify the location of the pairing-symmetry boundaries, whereas the local Hubbard interaction exhibits a comparatively weaker effect. In contrast to all other interaction channels, a finite nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction additionally stabilizes conventional s-wave state over a sizeable region of parameter space. Our results demonstrate that superconducting pairing symmetry in the extended Hubbard model is governed by a subtle interplay between carrier concentration and nonlocal electronic interactions.

Emergent pairing states and tunable symmetry in the anisotropic triangular lattice

Da-Fei Sun, Zuodong Yu, Weijian Li +2 more

The superconducting pairing symmetry is significantly constrained by lattice symmetry, yet how this pairing symmetry evolves with changes in lattice symmetry remains unclear. In this study, through variational quantum Monte Carlo simulations on the Hubbard model, we investigate the evolution of the superconducting ground state on an anisotropic triangular lattice with smoothly tunable frustration. At half-filling, we identify a hidden ${C}_{6}$-like $s+d+id$-wave superconductivity, which breaks time-reversal symmetry, emerging for moderate frustrations. This occurs as the lattice symmetry transitions from ${C}_{4}$ to ${C}_{2}$, where the ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave and $s+{d}_{xy}$-wave superconducting ground states dominate, respectively. Notably, we find an isotropic-like $d+id$-wave superconducting phase at ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t\ensuremath{\approx}0.7$, much lower than the expected value ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t=1$ predicted by most previous studies. At high electron doping levels, we further discover an unexpected quasi-one-dimensional ${d}_{xy}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-wave superconductivity characterized by strong pairing on the next-nearest-neighbor bond, despite the absence of direct hopping. The numerical data also reveal that pairing symmetries, belonging to distinct irreducible representations of the given point group, can mix together, beyond the conventional theories based on the linear gap equations.
