Abstract

In this work, we propose an information theoretic order parameter able to characterize the presence and breaking of categorical symmetries in (1+1)-d rational conformal field theories (RCFTs). Specifically, we compute the quantum relative entropy between the ground states of RCFTs representing the critical point of phase transitions between different symmetry-broken phases of theories with categorical symmetries, and their symmetrized versions. We find that, at leading order in the high temperature limit, this relative entropy only depends on the expectation values of the quantum dimensions of the topological operators implementing the categorical symmetry. This dependence suggests that our proposal can be used to characterize the different broken phases of (1+1)-d theories with categorical symmetries.

On the resolution of categorical symmetries in (Non-) Unitary Rational CFTs

Arpan Bhattacharyya, Saptaswa Ghosh, Sounak Pal +1 more

We explore several aspects of categorical symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy (SREE) directly within two-dimensional rational conformal field theory (RCFT) (without invoking any SymTFT construction arXiv:2409.02806). We derive a general formula applicable whenever the action of the relevant topological defect lines on the annulus Hilbert space is known. This framework accommodates weakly and strongly symmetric boundaries, cloaking states, and fusion rings with multiplicities. We verify the formula in a range of diagonal unitary and non-unitary examples, including theories with generalized Haagerup-Izumi modular data. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to non-diagonal RCFTs. The $\frac{1}{2}E_6$ example demonstrates that closed-channel modular data and NIM-rep multiplicities alone do not suffice to determine the defect action on the complete open-channel Hilbert space.

Categorical-symmetry resolved entanglement in conformal field theory

Pablo Saura-Bastida, Arpit Das, Germán Sierra +1 more

We propose a symmetry resolution of entanglement for categorical noninvertible symmetries (CaT-SREE) in ( 1+1 )-dimensional conformal field theories. The definition parallels that of grouplike invertible symmetries, employing the concept of symmetric boundary states with respect to a categorical symmetry. Our examination extends to rational conformal field theories, where the behavior of CaT-SREE mirrors that of grouplike invertible symmetries. We find that CaT-SREE can be defined if there is no obstruction to gauging the categorical symmetry, as happens in the case of grouplike symmetries. We also provide instances of the breakdown of entanglement equipartition at the next-to-leading order in the cutoff expansion. Our findings shed light on how the interplay between conformal boundary conditions and categorical symmetries lead to specific patterns in the entanglement entropy. Exploring Entropic Orders: High Temperature Continuous Symmetry Breaking, Chiral Topological States and Local Commuting Projector Models

Po-Shen Hsin, Ryohei Kobayashi

High temperature is usually expected to destroy order: as the Gibbs state approaches the infinite-temperature limit, it becomes an equal-weight ensemble over all states and the system is generically disordered. Recent works showed that entropic order can violate this expectation through coupling to bosons in classical lattice models and quantum field theories, where the ordered states have higher entropy. Here we present new analytic methods for constructing quantum lattice models that exhibit entropic orders. In particular, we construct quantum lattice models with continuous symmetry breaking at high temperature in 1+1 dimensions and clarify how entropic order can evade the Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorems. We also construct high-temperature entropic $p+ip$ chiral topological superconducting states in 2+1 dimensions with temperature-independent anyon correlation functions. In addition, we obtain a broad family of high-temperature entropic non-chiral topological orders. We show that the entropic topological orders have strong higher form symmetries at high temperature unlike the conventional topological orders, and the symmetry is spontaneously broken. These results follow from two general constructions that couple a given lattice model with a low-temperature ordered phase either to ordered bosons or, for local commuting-projector Hamiltonians, to more general bosonic degrees of freedom.

Relative Rényi entropy under local quenches in 2D CFTs

Zi-Xuan Zhao, Song He, Hao Ouyang +2 more

A bstract We study the relative Rényi entropy (RRE) under local quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), focusing on rational CFTs (RCFTs) and holographic CFTs. In RCFTs, the RRE evolves as a monotonic function over time, depending on finite-dimensional matrices. It is sometimes symmetric, prompting an investigation into its relationship with the squared trace distance. We also observe that relative entropy can fail to distinguish between operators, as it only captures information entering/exiting the subsystem. In holographic CFTs, an analytic continuation of the RRE reveals insights into the entanglement wedge, offering a new perspective on bulk geometry in AdS/CFT. Our results deepen the understanding of quantum information measures in RCFTs and holographic CFTs, highlighting connections to distinguishability and bulk reconstruction.

Generalized symmetry resolution of entanglement in conformal field theory for twisted and anyonic sectors

Arpit Das, Javier Molina-Vilaplana, Pablo Saura-Bastida

A comprehensive symmetry resolution of the entanglement entropy in ( 1 + 1 )-d rational conformal field theories with categorical noninvertible symmetries is presented. This amounts to symmetry resolving the entanglement with respect to the generalized twisted and anyonic charged sectors of the theory. The anyonic sectors label the irreducible representations of a modular fusion category defining the symmetry and can be understood through the ( 2 + 1 )-d symmetry topological field theory that encodes the symmetry features of the conformal field theory. Using this, we define the corresponding generalized boundary-dependent charged moments necessary for the symmetry resolution of the entanglement entropy and find that, contrary to the case of invertible symmetries, the entanglement equipartition between different charged sectors at the next-to-leading order in the ultraviolet cutoff, is broken. Relative anomaly in ( 1+1 )d rational conformal field theory

Meng Cheng, Dominic J. Williamson

We study 't Hooft anomalies of symmetry-enriched rational conformal field theories (RCFT) in (1+1)d. Such anomalies determine whether a theory can be realized in a truly (1+1)d system with on-site symmetry, or on the edge of a (2+1)d symmetry-protected topological phase. RCFTs with the identical symmetry actions on their chiral algebras may have different 't Hooft anomalies due to additional symmetry charges on local primary operators. To compute the relative anomaly, we establish a precise correspondence between (1+1)d non-chiral RCFTs and (2+1)d doubled symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases with a choice of symmetric gapped boundary. Based on these results we derive a general formula for the relative 't Hooft anomaly in terms of algebraic data that characterizes the SET phase and its boundary.
