Abstract

The formation of quantized vortices above a certain critical trap rotation frequency serves as a hallmark signature of superfluidity. Based on the beyond mean-field framework, crucial for the formation of exotic supersolid and droplet states, we investigate dynamical protocols for vortex nucleation in the superfluid and supersolid states of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at a trap rotation frequency lower than the conventional critical rotation frequency. We find that the critical rotation frequency depends not only on the dipole-dipole interaction strength, but also on the polarization direction of the external magnetic field. Interestingly, in the superfluid state, the critical rotation frequency increases with the tilt angle of the magnetic field, whereas in the supersolid state, increasing the tilt angle lowers the critical threshold. Leveraging these characteristics of dipolar BECs, along with the robustness of vortices with respect to changes in the polarization direction and $s$-wave scattering length, we demonstrate three dynamical protocols for vortex nucleation, even when rotating below the critical rotation frequency, viz., (i) varying the $s$-wave scattering length, (ii) changing the polarizing angle, and (iii) successive modulation of both the scattering length and polarizing angle. These dynamical vortex seeding protocols could serve as important benchmarks for future experimental studies.

Vortex nucleation in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with density-dependent gauge potential

Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat, Thudiyangal Mithun, Bishwajyoti Dey

We study numerically the vortex dynamics and vortex-lattice formation in a rotating density-dependent Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), characterized by the presence of nonlinear rotation. By varying the strength of nonlinear rotation in density-dependent BECs, we calculate the critical frequency, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\text{cr}}$, for vortex nucleation both in adiabatic and sudden external trap rotations. The nonlinear rotation modifies the extent of deformation experienced by the BEC due to the trap and shifts the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\text{cr}}$ values for vortex nucleation. The critical frequencies, and thereby the transition to vortex-lattices in an adiabatic rotation ramp, depend on conventional $s$-wave scattering lengths through the strength of nonlinear rotation, $\mathit{C}$, such that ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\text{cr}}(\mathit{C}>0)<{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\text{cr}}(\mathit{C}=0)<{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{\text{cr}}(\mathit{C}<0)$. In an analogous manner, the critical ellipticity (${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{\text{cr}}$) for vortex nucleation during an adiabatic introduction of trap ellipticity ($\ensuremath{\epsilon}$) depends on the nature of nonlinear rotation besides trap rotation frequency. The nonlinear rotation additionally affects the vortex-vortex interactions and the motion of the vortices through the condensate by altering the strength of Magnus force on them. The combined result of these nonlinear effects is the formation of the non-Abrikosov vortex-lattices and ring-vortex arrangements in the density-dependent BECs.

Vortices in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

Quantized vortices are the hallmark of superfluidity, and are often sought out as the first observable feature in new superfluid systems. Following the recent experimental observation of vortices in Bose–Einstein condensates comprised of atoms with inherent long-range dipole-dipole interactions [ Nat. Phys. 18 , 1453-1458 (2022)], we thoroughly investigate vortex properties in the three-dimensional dominantly dipolar regime, where beyond-mean-field effects are crucial for stability, and investigate the interplay between trap geometry and magnetic field tilt angle.

Vortex patterns and the critical rotational frequency in rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Yongyong Cai, Yongjun Yuan, Matthias Rosenkranz +2 more

Based on the two-dimensional mean-field equations for pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating frame, for both attractive and repulsive dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) as well as arbitrary polarization direction, we study the profiles of the single vortex state and show how the critical rotational frequency changes with the $s$-wave contact interaction strength, DDI strength, and polarization angle. In addition, we find numerically that at the ``magic angle'' $\ensuremath{\vartheta}=arccos(\sqrt{3}/3)$, the critical rotational frequency is almost independent of the DDI strength. By numerically solving the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation at high rotation speed, we identify different patterns of vortex lattices which strongly depend on the polarization direction. As a result, we undergo a study of vortex lattice structures for the whole regime of polarization direction and find evidence that the vortex lattice orientation tends to be aligned to the dipole polarization axis for positive DDI strength and to the perpendicular direction of the dipole axis for negative DDI strength.

Control of Dy 164 Bose-Einstein condensate phases and dynamics with dipolar anisotropy

Soumyadeep Halder, K. Mukherjee, S. I. Mistakidis +5 more

We investigate the quench dynamics of quasi-one- and two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ atoms under the influence of a fast rotating magnetic field. The magnetic field thus controls both the magnitude and sign of the dipolar potential. We account for quantum fluctuations, critical to formation of exotic quantum droplet and supersolid phases in the extended Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, which includes the so-called Lee-Huang-Yang correction. An analytical variational ansatz allows us to obtain the phase diagrams of the superfluid and droplet phases. The crossover from the superfluid to the supersolid phase and to single and droplet arrays is probed with particle number and dipolar interaction. The dipolar strength is tuned by rotating the magnetic field with subsequent effects on phase boundaries. Following interaction quenches across the aforementioned phases, we monitor the dynamical formation of supersolid clusters or droplet lattices. We include losses due to three-body recombination over the crossover regime, where the three-body recombination rate coefficient scales with the fourth power of the scattering length $({a}_{s})$ or the dipole length $({a}_{dd})$. For fixed values of the dimensionless parameter, ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{dd}={a}_{dd}/{a}_{s}$, tuning the dipolar anisotropy leads to an enhancement of the droplet lifetimes.

Vortex lattice formation in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates via rotation of the polarization

SB Prasad, T Bland, BC Mulkerin +2 more

The behavior of a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with its dipole moments rotating at angular frequencies lower than the transverse harmonic trapping frequency is explored in the co-rotating frame. We obtain semi-analytical solutions for the stationary states in the Thomas-Fermi limit of the corresponding dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation and utilize linear stability analysis to elucidate a phase diagram for the dynamical stability of these stationary solutions with respect to collective modes. These results are verified via direct numerical simulations of the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which demonstrate that dynamical instabilities of the co-rotating stationary solutions lead to the seeding of vortices that eventually relax into a triangular lattice configuration. Our results illustrate that rotation of the dipole polarization represents a new route to vortex formation in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.
