Abstract

The Kitaev chain model with a spatially modulated phase in the superconducting order parameter exhibits two types of topological transitions, namely, a band topology transition between trivial and topological gapped phases, and a Fermi surface Lifshitz transition from a gapped to a gapless superconducting state. We investigate the correlation functions of the model for arbitrary values of superconducting coupling ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{0}$, chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$, and phase modulation wavevector $Q$, characterizing the current flowing through the system. In the cases $\ensuremath{\mu}=0$ or $Q=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2$ the model turns out to exhibit special symmetries, which are proven to induce an even/odd effect in the correlations as a function of the distance $l$ between two lattice sites, as they are nonvanishing or strictly vanishing depending on the parity of $l$, measured in the lattice spacing unit. We identify a clear difference between the band topology and the Lifshitz transition through the $Q$ dependence of the short distance correlation functions, which, in particular, exhibit pronounced cusps with discontinuous derivatives across the Lifshitz transition. We also determine the long-distance behavior of correlations, finding that in the gapped phase there can be various types of exponential decays and that in the gapless phase the algebraic decay is characterized by two different spatial periods, depending on the model parameters. Furthermore, we establish a connection between the gapless superconducting phase of the Kitaev chain and the chiral phase of spin models with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Disordered Kitaev chains with long-range pairing

Xiaoming Cai

We study the competition of disorder and superconductivity for a generalized Kitaev model in incommensurate potentials. The generalized Kitaev model describes one dimensional spinless fermions with long-range p-wave superconducting pairing, which decays with distance l as a power law ∼[Formula: see text]. We focus on the transition from the topological superconducting phase to the topologically trivial Anderson localized phase, and effects of the exponent α on this phase transition. In the topological superconducting phase, for a system under open boundary condition the amplitude of zero-mode Majorana fermion has a hybrid exponential-algebraic decay as the distance increases from the edge. In the Anderson localized phase, some single-particle states remain critical for very strong disorders and the number of critical states increases as α decreases. In addition, except for critical disorders, the correlation function always has an exponential decay at the short range and an algebraic decay at the long range. Phase transition points are also numerically determined and the topological phase transition happens earlier at a smaller disorder strength for a system with smaller α.

Majorana wave-function oscillations, fermion parity switches, and disorder in Kitaev chains

Suraj Hegde, Smitha Vishveshwara

We study the decay and oscillations of Majorana fermion wave functions and ground-state (GS) fermion parity in one-dimensional topological superconducting lattice systems. Using a Majorana transfer matrix method, we find that Majorana wave-function properties are encoded in the associated Lyapunov exponent, which in turn is the sum of two independent components: a ``superconducting component,'' which characterizes the gap induced decay, and the ``normal component,'' which determines the oscillations and response to chemical potential configurations. The topological phase transition separating phases with and without Majorana end modes is seen to be a cancellation of these two components. We show that Majorana wave-function oscillations are completely determined by an underlying nonsuperconducting tight-binding model and are solely responsible for GS fermion parity switches in finite-sized systems. These observations enable us to analytically chart out wave-function oscillations, the resultant GS parity configuration as a function of parameter space in uniform wires, and special parity switch points where degenerate zero energy Majorana modes are restored in spite of finite size effects. For disordered wires, we find that band oscillations are completely washed out leading to a second localization length for the Majorana mode and the remnant oscillations are randomized as per Anderson localization physics in normal systems. Our transfer matrix method further allows us to (i) reproduce known results on the scaling of midgap Majorana states and demonstrate the origin of its log-normal distribution, (ii) identify contrasting behavior of disorder-dependent GS parity switches for the cases of even versus odd number of lattice sites, and (iii) chart out the GS parity configuration and associated parity switch points as a function of disorder strength.

Topological gapless phase in Kitaev model on square lattice

P. Wang, S. Lin, Gang Zhang +1 more

We study the topological feature of gapless states in the fermionic Kitaev model on a square lattice. There are two types of gapless states which are topologically trivial and nontrivial. We show that the topological gapless phase lives in a wide two-dimensional parameter region and are characterized by two vertices of an auxiliary vector field de-fined in the two-dimensional momentum space, with opposite winding numbers. The isolated band touching points, as the topological defects of the field, move, emerge, and disappear as the parameters vary. The band gap starts to open only at the merg-ing points, associated with topologically trivial gapless states. The symmetry protect-ing the topological gapless phase and the robustness under perturbations are also discussed.

Quantum phase transitions in the Kitaev model on decorated lattices

Igor N. Karnaukhov

We have proposed an exactly solvable model defined on 2D decorated lattices of two types. The ground-state phase diagram of the system includes different topological phases with gapless chiral edge states. We show that two types of chiral spin liquid with gapless edge modes are realized on lattices with different symmetry. The phase transition between the topological phase with chiral gapped (Chern number zero) and the topological phase with chiral gapless edge modes (Chern number ) occurs in the model on the square (symmetric) decorated lattice. On the rectangular (asymmetric) decorated lattice the topological phase is defined by a chiral gapless (gapped) edge mode in the x ( y ) direction and a chiral gapped (gapless) edge mode in another y ( x ) direction. We show that a Kitaev model on a decorated asymmetric square lattice exhibits the quantum phase transition between topological phases with equal Chern numbers.

Fidelity susceptibility and long-range correlation in the Kitaev honeycomb model

Shuo Yang, Shi-Jian Gu, Chang-Pu Sun +1 more

We study exactly both the ground-state fidelity susceptibility and bond-bond correlation function in the Kitaev honeycomb model. Our results show that the fidelity susceptibility can be used to identify the topological phase transition from a gapped $A$ phase with Abelian anyon excitations to a gapless $B$ phase with non-Abelian anyon excitations. We also find that the bond-bond correlation function decays exponentially in the gapped phase, but algebraically in the gapless phase. For the former case, the correlation length is found to be $1/\ensuremath{\xi}=2\text{ }{\text{sinh}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}[\sqrt{2{J}_{z}\ensuremath{-}1}/(1\ensuremath{-}{J}_{z})]$, which diverges around the critical point ${J}_{z}={(1/2)}^{+}$.

Magnetic phase diagram of a spin-1/2 X X Z chain with modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

G. I. Japaridze, Hadi Cheraghi, S. Mahdavifar

We consider the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with a spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the presence of an alternating magnetic field applied along the z[over ̂] axis. The model is studied using the continuum-limit bosonization approach and the finite system exact numerical technique. In the absence of a magnetic field, the ground-state phase diagram of the model includes, besides the ferromagnetic and gapless Luttinger-liquid phases, two gapped phases: the composite (C1) phase characterized by the coexistence of long-range-ordered (LRO) alternating dimerization and spin chirality patterns, and the composite (C2) phase characterized by, in addition to the coexisting spin dimerization and alternating chirality patterns, the presence of LRO antiferromagnetic order. In the case of mentioned composite gapped phases, and in the case of a uniform magnetic field, the commensurate-incommensurate type quantum phase transitions from a gapful phase into a gapless phase have been identified and described using the bosonization treatment and finite chain exact diagonalization studies. The upper critical magnetic field corresponding to the transition into a fully polarized state has been also determined. It has been shown that the very presence of a staggered component of the magnetic field vapes the composite (C1) in favor of the composite gapped (C2) phase.
