Abstract

Quantum annealing (QA) is an algorithm to find the ground state of the problem Hamiltonian by using an adiabatic time evolution. An approach to evaluate adiabaticity in the experiment by applying spectroscopic techniques has recently been suggested. However, this method requires temporal oscillation of interaction strength during QA, posing challenges for experimental demonstration. Here, we propose an experimental method for evaluating adiabaticity when performing QA with a parametric oscillator with Kerr nonlinearity (KPO). Importantly, our proposal offers a significant advantage by eliminating the need for temporal oscillation of interactions during QA. We investigate its performance through numerical simulations, and we show the feasibility of our method.

Effective spin models of Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators for quantum annealing

Ryoji Miyazaki

A method of quantum annealing (QA) using Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) was proposed. This method is described by bosonic operators and has different characteristics from QA based on the transverse-field Ising model. As the first step to describe this method in the conventional framework of QA, we propose effective spin models of KPOs. The spin models are obtained via a variant of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and are described by spin-$s$ operators. The terms for detuning, coherent driving, parametric driving, and the Kerr effect are mapped to the transverse field, longitudinal field, and nonlinear terms for the $z$ and $x$ components of spins, respectively. By analyzing the spin models corresponding to KPOs in several settings, we demonstrate that the present spin models for a rather large $s$ and tuned parameters qualitatively reproduce the behavior of KPOs.

Quantum annealing in capacitively coupled Kerr parametric oscillators using frequency-chirped drives

T. Yamaji, S. Masuda, Y. Kano +7 more

We study parametric oscillations of two capacitively coupled Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs) with frequency-chirped two- and one-photon drives. The two-KPO system adiabatically evolves from the initial vacuum state to an oscillation state corresponding to a solution state in quantum-annealing applications. Frequency chirping dynamically changes the detuning between resonance and oscillation frequencies during parametric modulation and reduces unwanted population transfer to excited states caused by pure dephasing and photon loss. We observe that frequency chirping increases the success probability to obtain the solution state and that simulations taking into account pure dephasing reproduce experiments with and without frequency chirping. This study demonstrates the effectiveness and applicability of frequency chirping to a KPO-based quantum annealer.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopic measurements of Kerr nonlinear resonators with four-body interaction

Yuichiro Matsuzaki, Yuichiro Mori, Aiko Yamaguchi +2 more

Abstract Quantum annealing provides a promising way to solve combinational optimization problems where the solutions correspond to the ground state of the Ising Hamiltonian. We can implement quantum annealing using the Kerr nonlinear resonators (KNRs), with bifurcation phenomena emerging when subjected to a parametric drive. These bifurcated states can function as bases of qubits. Moreover, integrating four-body interactions between physical qubits enables the establishment of effective all-to-all long-range interactions between logical qubits, which is essential for practical quantum annealing. While theoretical proposals exist for creating four-body interactions within KNRs, there has not been experimental verification through their spectroscopic signatures. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the spectroscopic measurements of KNRs featuring four-body interaction. We identify six distinct frequencies exhibiting population changes by employing resonant driving on one resonator and weak driving on another. Analytical and numerical calculations validate these findings. Our study demonstrates the potential of spectroscopy in characterizing systems with four-body interactions, offering insights for realizing quantum annealing with Kerr parametric oscillators.

Chaos in coupled Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators

Hayato Goto, Taro Kanao

A Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) can generate a quantum superposition of two oscillating states, known as a Schr\"odinger cat state, via quantum adiabatic evolution and can be used as a qubit for gate-based quantum computing and quantum annealing. In this work, we investigate complex dynamics, i.e., chaos, in two coupled nondissipative KPOs at a few-photon level. After showing that a classical model for this system is nonintegrable and consequently exhibits chaotic behavior, we provide quantum counterparts for the classical results, which are quantum versions of the Poincar\'e surface of section and its lower-dimensional version defined with time integrals of the Wigner and Husimi functions and also the initial and long-term behavior of out-of-time-ordered correlators. We conclude that some of them can be regarded as quantum signatures of chaos, together with energy-level spacing statistics (conventional signature). Thus, the system of coupled KPOs is expected to offer not only an alternative approach to quantum computing but also a promising platform for the study on quantum chaos.

How to experimentally evaluate the adiabatic condition for quantum annealing

Yuichiro Mori, Shiro Kawabata, Yuichiro Matsuzaki

We propose an experimental method for evaluating the adiabatic condition during quantum annealing (QA), which will be essential for solving practical problems. The adiabatic condition consists of the transition matrix element and the energy gap, and our method simultaneously provides information about these components without diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. The key idea is to measure the power spectrum of a time domain signal by adding an oscillating field during QA, and we can estimate the values of the transition matrix element and energy gap from the measurement output. Our results provides a powerful experimental basis for analyzing the performance of QA.

Fast Tunable Coupling Scheme of Kerr Parametric Oscillators Based on Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Shumpei Masuda, Taro Kanao, Hayato Goto +3 more

Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs), which can be implemented with superconducting parametrons possessing large Kerr nonlinearity, have been attracting much attention in terms of their applications to quantum annealing, universal quantum computation, and studies of quantum many-body systems. It is of practical importance for these studies to realize fast and accurate tunable coupling between KPOs in a simple manner. We develop a simple scheme of fast tunable coupling of KPOs with high tunability in speed and amplitude using the fast transitionless rotation of a KPO in the phase space based on the shortcuts to adiabaticity. Our scheme enables rapid switching of the effective coupling between KPOs, and can be implemented with always-on linear coupling between KPOs, by controlling the phase of the pump field and the resonance frequency of the KPO without controlling the amplitude of the pump field nor using additional drive fields and couplers. We apply the coupling scheme to a two-qubit gate, and show that our scheme realizes high gate fidelity compared with a purely adiabatic one, by mitigating undesired nonadiabatic transitions.
