Abstract

The roton-triggered charge-density-wave (CDW)is widely studied in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) and fractional Chern insulator (FCI) systems, and there also exist field theoretical and numerical realizations of continuous transition from FCI to superfluid (SF). However, the theory and numerical explorations of the transition between FCI and supersolid (SS) are still lacking. In this work, we study the topological flat-band lattice models with $ν$ = 1/2 hard-core bosons, where the previous studies have discovered the existence of FCI states and possible direct FCI-SS transitions. While the FCI is robust, we find the direct FCI-SS transition is absent, and there exist more intriguing scenarios. In the case of checkerboard lattice, we find an intermediate gapless CDW state without SF, sandwiched between FCI and SS. This novel state is triggered by the roton instability in FCI and it further continuously brings about the intertwined finite-momentum SF fluctuation when the CDW order is strong enough, eventually transiting into an unconventional finite-momentum SS state. The intermediate gapless CDW state is a vestige from the SS state, since the increasing quantum fluctuation melts only the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-type SF order in SS but its (secondary) product -- the CDW order -- survives. On honeycomb lattice, we find no evidence of SS, but discover an interesting sequence of FCI-Solid I-Solid II transitions, with both solids incompressible. Moreover, in contrast to previous single-roton condensation, this sequence of FCI-Solid I-Solid II transitions is triggered by the softening of multi-roton modes in FCI. Considering the intertwined wave vectors of the CDW orders, Solid I is a vestige of Solid II. Our work provides new horizon not only for the quantum phase transitions in FCI but also for the intertwined orders and gapless states in bosonic systems, which will inspire future studies.

Continuous Transition between Bosonic Fractional Chern Insulator and Superfluid

Hongyu Lu, Han-Qing Wu, Binbin Chen +1 more

The properties of fractional Chern insulator (FCI) phases and the phase transitions between FCIs and Mott insulators in bosonic systems are well studied. The continuous transitions between FCI and superfluids (SFs), however, despite the inspiring field theoretical predictions [M. Barkeshli and J. McGreevy, Phys. Rev. B 89, 235116 (2014)PRBMDO1098-012110.1103/PhysRevB.89.235116; M. Barkeshli and J. McGreevy, Phys. Rev. B 86, 075136 (2012)PRBMDO1098-012110.1103/PhysRevB.86.075136; M. Barkeshli et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 026802 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.115.026802; X.-Y. Song et al., Phys. Rev. B 109, 085143 (2024)PRBMDO2469-995010.1103/PhysRevB.109.085143; and X.-Y. Song and Y.-H. Zhang, SciPost Phys. 15, 215 (2023)2542-465310.21468/SciPostPhys.15.5.215], have not been directly verified. The existing numerical results of the FCI-SF transition are either indirect or clearly first order. Here, by simply tuning the bandwidth of the Haldane honeycomb lattice model, we find direct transitions from a bosonic FCI at ν=1/2 filling of a flat Chern band to two SF states with bosons condensed at momenta M or Γ, respectively. While the FCI-SF(M) transition is first order, the FCI-SF(Γ) transition is found to be continuous, and the bipartite entanglement entropy at the critical point with the area-law scaling is consistent with the critical theories. Through finite-size criticality analysis, the obtained critical exponents β≈0.35(5) and ν≈0.62(12) are both compatible with those of the 3D XY universality class within numerical uncertainty and possibly more exotic beyond-Landau ones. This Letter thence presents a direct numerical demonstration of a continuous FCI-SF transition between a topologically ordered phase and a spontaneous continuous symmetry-breaking phase, and further indicates the zero-field bosonic FCI might be realized from a SF state by gradually flattening the dispersion of the Chern band, through the (quasi)adiabatic preparation in ultracold atom systems.

Spectra of Magnetoroton and Chiral Graviton Modes of Fractional Chern Insulator

Long, Min, Hongyu Lu, Han-Qing Wu +1 more

Employing the state-of-the-art time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) algorithm, we compute the spectra of charge-neutral excitations in the $ν=1/2$ (bosonic) \updated{ and $1/3$ (fermionic) fractional Chern insulator (FCI)} on the Haldane honeycomb lattice model. The magnetoroton visualized from the dynamic density structure factor acquires a minimum gap at finite momentum that can go soft with increasing interaction and give rise to a charge density wave (CDW) at the same wavevector. As the system approaches the FCI-to-CDW transition point, we observe a pronounced sharpening of the roton mode, suggesting that the magnetoroton behaves more like a quasiparticle as it softens. Notably, this occurs while the single-particle gap remains finite. Besides the magnetoroton at finite momentum, we also construct quadrupolar chiral operators in a discrete lattice and resolve the chiral graviton mode around the $Γ$ point of the Brillouin zone. Furthermore, we show the different chiralities of the gravitons of FCIs with opposite-sign Hall conductance for the first time.

Chiral Graviton Modes in Fermionic Fractional Chern Insulators

Min Long, Zeno Bacciconi, Hongyu Lu +3 more

Chiral graviton modes are hallmark collective excitations of Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) liquids. However, their existence on the lattice, where continuum symmetries that protect them from decay are lost, is still an open and urgent question, especially considering the recent advances in the realization of Fractional Chern Insulators (FCI) in transition metal dichalcogenides and rhombohedral pentalayer graphene. Here we present a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study of graviton-modes in fermionic FCI, and thoroughly demonstrate their existence. We first derive a lattice stress tensor operator in the context of the fermionic Harper-Hofstadter(HH) model which captures the graviton in the flat band limit. Importantly, we discover that such lattice stress-tensor operators are deeply connected to lattice quadrupolar density correlators, readily generalizable to generic Chern bands. We then explicitly show the adiabatic connection between FQH and FCI chiral graviton modes by interpolating from a low flux HH model to a Checkerboard lattice model that hosts a topological flat band. In particular, using state-of-the-art matrix product state and exact diagonalization simulations, we provide strong evidence that chiral graviton modes are long-lived excitations in FCIs despite the lack of continuous symmetries and the scattering with a two-magnetoroton continuum. By means of a careful finite-size analysis, we show that the lattice generates a finite but small intrinsic decay rate for the graviton mode. We discuss the relevance of our results for the exploration of graviton modes in FCI phases realized in solid state settings, as well as cold atom experiments.

Paired Parton Trial States for the Superfluid-Fractional Chern Insulator Transition

Tevž Lotrič, Steven H. Simon

We consider a model of hard-core bosons on a lattice half-filling a Chern band such that the system has a continuous transition between a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) and a superfluid state (SF) depending on the bandwidth to bandspacing ratio. We construct a parton-inspired trial wave function Ansatz for the ground states that has remarkably high overlap with exact diagonalization in both phases and throughout the phase transition. Our Ansatz is stable to adding some bosonic interactions beyond the on-site hard-core constraint. We confirm that the transition is well described by a projective translation symmetry-protected multiple parton bandgap closure, as has been previously predicted. However, unlike prior work, we find that our wave functions require anomalous (BCS-like) parton correlations to describe the phase transition and SF phase accurately.

Quantum phase transitions in a ν=12 bosonic fractional Chern insulator

Wei-Wei Luo, Ai‐Lei He, Yuan Zhou +2 more

Interacting quantum many-body systems often generate exotic orders, either topological or conventional competing orders. Understanding these phases and the phase transitions between them are common issues in condensed-matter physics. How to characterize these states in a convincing and convenient way remains ambiguous. Here, we report our numerical study on the interacting $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{2}$ hard-core boson system with topological flat bands based on the infinite density matrix group algorithm. We explicitly show that the entanglement spectral flow can be used to diagnose the quantum phases emerging in the hard-core boson systems. In particular, the subsequent charge pumping exhibits a linear, sinelike, and indiscernible dependence by the flux threading in the fractional Chern insulator, supersolid, and solid state, respectively. The real-space boson occupancy in the thermodynamic limit is further calculated for a better understanding of the respective state. We compare the phase diagram obtained here with that obtained by the previously exact diagonalization method, and qualitative differences are observed. Therefore, the infinite density matrix group algorithm provides a convincing and convenient way to study the phase transition in such a strongly correlated topological system.

Fractional quantum Hall states of dipolar gases in Chern bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng, Lan Yin

We study fermions and hard-core bosons with long-range dipolar interactions at fractional fillings in a topological checkerboard lattice with short-range hoppings up to next-next-nearest neighbors [T. Neupert, L. Santos, C. Chamon, and C. Mudry, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 236804 (2011)]. We consider the case that the dipoles are aligned in the perpendicular direction by an external field without the complication of anisotropic interaction. Using exact diagonalization, we find clear signatures of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling factors 1/3 and 1/5 for fermions (1/2 and 1/4 for bosons) in the lowest Chern band with a robust spectrum gap at moderate dipolar interaction strength. The robustness of these FQH states against a long-range interaction tail and band flatness is investigated. When the dipolar interaction decreases, the fermionic FQH states turn into normal states, and the bosonic 1/4 FQH state turns into a superfluid state. The bosonic 1/2 FQH state survives even in the absence of the dipolar interaction, but vanishes when the hard core becomes a soft core with a critical on-site repulsion. In the thin torus limit, the static density structure factors indicate that the FQH state turns into a commensurate charge density wave state.
