A bstract This work is concerned with the realization and stability of a non-Abelian chiral quantum spin liquid phase. To do so, we cast the problem in a quantum wires framework, which is a dimensional deconstruction framework that allows us to study the (2+1) dimensional spin liquids phase from a series of coupled (1+1) dimensional theories. The lower dimension grants us the ability to perform a bosonization procedure, which yields two different partition functions connected by a strong-weak duality transformation. This bosonization procedure is illuminating in that it makes the fixed point structure of the model unequivocal. Then, we proceed by studying the RG flow through the β -functions, which we use to determine the phase structure. We find that the quantum spin liquid phase is realized and stable in the deep IR limit.
In this thesis we use a network of chiral junctions to realize non-Abelian topological phases in two dimensions. Our construction is based on boundary fixed points of low-energy field theories describing Y junctions of critical spin-chain models. To set the stage, we first study a single junction of gapless spin-1 chains belonging to the SU(2)2 universality class, whose spectrum includes fractional excitations such as Majorana fermions. We find that chiral fixed points appear as special points on a transition line that separates two regimes described by open boundary conditions. Remarkably, along this transition the junction behaves as a tunable spin circulator as the spin conductance varies continuously with the coupling constant of a marginal boundary operator. We then construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids departing from a honeycomb network made of critical spin-S chains. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2)k=2S anyons, which stem from the underlying WessZumino-Witten models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2)2 model. We find that this model has emergent Ising anyons, with spinons acting as vortex excitations that bind Majorana zero modes. We also show that the ground state of this network is threefold degenerate on the torus, asserting its non-Abelian character. Our work provides a controllable analytical framework to study non-Abelian topological phases, sheding new light on the stability of such phases in artificial quantum materials.
We describe a coupled-chain construction for chiral spin liquids in two-dimensional spin systems. Starting from a one-dimensional zigzag spin chain and imposing SU(2) symmetry in the framework of non-Abelian bosonization, we first show that our approach faithfully describes the low-energy physics of an exactly solvable model with a three-spin interaction. Generalizing the construction to the two-dimensional case, we obtain a theory that incorporates the universal properties of the chiral spin liquid predicted by Kalmeyer and Laughlin: charge-neutral edge states, gapped spin-1/2 bulk excitations, and ground state degeneracy on the torus signalling the topological order of this quantum state. In addition, we show that the chiral spin liquid phase is more easily stabilized in frustrated lattices containing corner-sharing triangles, such as the extended kagome lattice, than in the triangular lattice. Our field theoretical approach invites generalizations to more exotic chiral spin liquids and may be used to assess the existence of the chiral spin liquid as the ground state of specific lattice systems.

We use a network of chiral junctions to construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids in two spatial dimensions. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2) _k k anyons, which stem from the underlying SU(2) _k k WZW models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2) _2 2 model. We develop a coupled-wire construction of chiral spin liquids. The starting points are individual wires of electrons in the Mott regime that are subject to a Zeeman field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Suitable spin-flip couplings between the wires yield an Abelian chiral spin liquid state which supports spinon excitations above a bulk gap and chiral edge states. The approach generalizes to non-Abelian chiral spin liquids at level
k with parafermionic edge states.
Non-Abelian chiral spin liquids (CSLs) host non-Abelian anyon excitations and are promising platforms for topological quantum computation. However, realizing non-Abelian CSLs in short-range interacting spin systems remains elusive. Here, we study a spin-
1 square-lattice model with the first- and second-neighbor bilinear (
J1,J2) and biquadratic interactions (
K1,K2), as well as the three-spin scalar chiral coupling
Jχ. Inspired by the evidence of the Moore-Read state in exact diagonalization and infinite Projected Entangled Pair States calculations, we fix
J1=1.0,
J2/J1=0.623,
K1/J1=−0.176, and obtain a quantum phase diagram for
0≤K2/J1≤0.4 and
0.3≤Jχ/J1≤0.6 by using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. We identify a stripe antiferromagnetic phase, a Néel antiferromagnetic phase, a magnetically ordered chiral spin state phase, and a non-Abelian CSL phase emerging near the boundaries of the ordered phases. The unbiased DMRG results provide strong evidence for the Moore-Read state, including the three topological sectors, the quantized spin Chern number
C=1, and the level counting of low-lying entanglement spectra which is consistent with the chiral SU(2)
2 conformal field theory. Our results may shed new light on searching for non-Abelian CSLs in other higher-spin (
S>1/2) systems with short-range couplings.
