Abstract

A bstract In this work we address partial wave decompositions of thermal one-point functions in conformal field theories on S 1 × S d− 1 . With the help of Casimir differential equations we develop efficient algorithms to compute the relevant conformal blocks for an external field of arbitrary spin and with any spin exchange along the thermal circle, at least in three dimensions. This is achieved by identifying solutions to the Casimir equations with a special class of spherical functions in the harmonic analysis of the conformal group. The resulting blocks are then applied to study the decomposition of one-point functions of the scalar ϕ 2 and the stress tensor T for a three-dimensional free scalar field ϕ . We are able to read off averaged OPE coefficients into exchanged fields of high weight and spin for a complete set of tensor structures. We also extract an asymptotic behaviour of conformal blocks and use it to analyse the density of heavy-heavy-light OPE coefficients for spinning operators, comparing it with semi-classical predictions, such as the dimensions of operators at large charge.

Thermal Polyakov bootstrap

Yongwei Guo, Zhijin Li, Tinghong Shen

We derive thermal Polyakov bootstrap equations for CFT two-point functions on $S^1_β\times\mathbb R^{d-1}$. Combining the thermal OPE with a dispersion relation and the method of images gives a representation in blocks that satisfy Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) covariance. Their local expansions contain additional thermal blocks at classical double-twist dimensions. Matching the prescribed physical OPE requires cancellation of these generated contributions, yielding explicit linear equations for thermal OPE coefficients, including any compensating terms required by the reconstruction. We formulate the equations for bosonic scalar correlators and antiperiodic scalar structures extracted from fermion correlators, and find consistent solutions in analytically tractable thermal CFTs. The coefficient matrix, which we call the Polyakov matrix, connects the large-spin expansion to KMS consistency and reduces to minus the identity on the classical double-twist spectrum. This structure suggests a numerical approach to the three-dimensional Ising CFT that combines known low-lying vacuum data with a self-consistent large-spin tail.

Torus conformal blocks and Casimir equations in the necklace channel

Konstantin Alkalaev, Semyon Mandrygin, Mikhail Pavlov

Abstract We consider the conformal block decomposition in arbitrary exchange channels of a two-dimensional conformal field theory on a torus. The channels are described by diagrams built of a closed loop with external legs (a necklace sub-diagram) and trivalent vertices forming trivalent trees attached to the necklace. Then, the n-point torus conformal block in any channel can be obtained by acting with a number of OPE operators on the k-point torus block in the necklace channel at k = 1, …, n. Focusing on the necklace channel, we go to the large-c regime, where the Virasoro algebra truncates to the sl(2, ℝ) subalgebra, and obtain the system of the Casimir equations for the respective k-point global conformal block. In the plane limit, when the torus modular parameter q → 0, we explicitly find the Casimir equations on a plane which define the (k + 2)-point global conformal block in the comb channel. Finally, we formulate the general scheme to find Casimir equations for global torus blocks in arbitrary channels.

Regge in Wonderland

Alessio Miscioscia, Dmitrii Pavshinkin, Fedor K. Popov

We study the asymptotic behavior of large-spin operators in conformal field theories by placing the theory on a pp-wave background. In this setting, the diagonal three-point coefficients involving two large-spin operators and a light operator are mapped to thermal one-point functions on the pp-wave. We predict these one-point functions in the two complementary regimes of high and low temperature, corresponding respectively to the total twist parametrically above and below an appropriate spin-dependent scale. In particular, at high temperature, we derive their asymptotic behavior using thermal effective field theory, while at low temperature, we obtain universal formulas that can be matched directly to predictions from the analytic bootstrap. We test these results in free theories on the pp-wave. Finally, we solve the large-$N$ $\mathrm{O}(N)$ model numerically, finding agreement with our predictions for both the one-point function and the free energy density in the high- and low-temperature regimes.

Survey on the Conformal Field Theories in two dimensions and Minimal Models

Atlas Çelik

The fundamentals of the conformal symmetry transformations in two dimensions are introduced. From the adapted \textit{Ward identities under conformal constraints}, the \textit{operator product expansion} (OPE) is defined for free fields and the energy momentum tensor (EM). After demonstrating how the energy momentum tensor transforms under conformal invariance, the notion of the \textit{central charge c} is defined. Conformal fields in two dimensions are \textit{radially} quantized on the cylinder within the framework of the second quantization of quantum field theory and are then mapped onto complex plane via a conformal mapping. The \textit{radial ordering} of conformal fields is adopted. The \textit{Virasoro algebra} is derived from the identification of the \textit{conformal generators}, which follow from relations between equal-time commutators and contour integrals of conformal fields. The radial quantization is applied to the free fermionic and bosonic fields, where for the latter the \textit{Vertex operator} is defined and specified. The Fock space of the free boson is constructed through the \textit{operator state correspondence}. Various boundary conditions are applied to free fields, and their effects on the ground-state energy density are detailed, leading to the notion of the \textit{Casimir energy}. The OPEs are regularized for the \textit{interacting} conformal fields, namely the E-M tensor, and the related definition of \textit{normal ordering} is revisited. Utilization of the Virasoro algebra led first to the \textit{descendant states} and subsequently to the \textit{conformal families}. The OPEs are generalized for the conformal families, and it is demonstrated how the three-point function coefficients may be obtained in terms of the two-point functions. The same procedure is employed generically through the definition of the \textit{conformal blocks}. The \textit{conformal Bootstrap method} is introduced to calculate the coefficients of $n$ point functions. The Hilbert space of the conformal fields in two dimensions is formally constructed through the \textit{representation theory of Virasoro algebra}. Accordingly, the reducible and irreducible \textit{Verma modules} are specified. Due to the unitarity requirement of the Hilbert space, the famous \textit{Kac determinant} is introduced to obtain constraints on the inner products of the Verma modules, whence on the \textit{conformal weights} and the central charge. The decoupling of the \textit{null states} from rest of the their conformal families is used to obtain \textit{fusion rules} of the families. The \textit{Kac table} for the constrained conformal weights is constructed, and its analysis under the requirement of unitarity leads to the identification of the \textit{minimal models}. The correspondence between the discrete statistical systems at criticality and the minimal models is studied, where special attention is given on the \textit{Ising model}.

A new handle on three-point coefficients: OPE asymptotics from genus two modular invariance

John Cardy, Alexander Maloney, Henry Maxfield

We derive an asymptotic formula for operator product expansion coefficients of heavy operators in two dimensional conformal field theory. This follows from modular invariance of the genus two partition function, and generalises the asymptotic formula for the density of states from torus modular invariance. The resulting formula is universal, depending only on the central charge, but involves the asymptotic behaviour of genus two conformal blocks. We use monodromy techniques to compute the asymptotics of the relevant blocks at large central charge to determine the behaviour explicitly.

Thermal one-point functions: CFT’s with fermions, large d and large spin

Justin R. David, Srijan Kumar

A bstract We apply the OPE inversion formula on thermal two-point functions of fermions to obtain thermal one-point function of fermion bi-linears appearing in the corresponding OPE. We primarily focus on the OPE channel which contains the stress tensor of the theory. We apply our formalism to the mean field theory of fermions and verify that the inversion formula reproduces the spectrum as well as their corresponding thermal one-point functions. We then examine the large N critical Gross-Neveu model in d = 2 k + 1 dimensions with k even and at finite temperature. We show that stress tensor evaluated from the inversion formula agrees with that evaluated from the partition function at the critical point. We demonstrate the expectation values of 3 different classes of higher spin currents are all related to each other by numerical constants, spin and the thermal mass. We evaluate the ratio of the thermal expectation values of higher spin currents at the critical point to the Gaussian fixed point or the Stefan-Boltzmann result, both for the large N critical O ( N ) model and the Gross-Neveu model in odd dimensions. This ratio is always less than one and it approaches unity on increasing the spin with the dimension d held fixed. The ratio however approaches zero when the dimension d is increased with the spin held fixed.
