Abstract

Monitored quantum system have sparked great interest in recent years due to the possibility of observing measurement-induced phase transitions (MIPTs) in the full-counting statistics of quantum trajectories. Here, we investigate the dynamics of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, composed of $N$ all-to-all interacting spins $1/2$, under a weak external monitoring. In the thermodynamic limit, we derive a set of semiclassical stochastic equations describing the evolution of the expectation values of global spin observables. Our results show that the limit $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ does not commute with the long-time limit: while for any finite $N$ the average over trajectories is expected to converge towards a trivial steady state, in the thermodynamic limit a MIPT appears. The transition is not affected by postselection issues, as it is already visible at the level of ensemble averages. We derive a quantitative theoretical picture explaining the nature of the transition within our semiclassical approach.

Theory of Free Fermions Dynamics under Partial Postselected Monitoring

Chun Y. Leung, Dganit Meidan, Alessandro Romito

Monitored quantum systems undergo measurement-induced phase transitions (MiPTs) stemming from the interplay between measurements and unitary dynamics. When the detector readout is postselected to match a given value, the dynamics is generated by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with MiPTs characterized by different universal features. Here, we derive a stochastic Schrödinger equation based on a microscopic description of continuous weak measurement. This formalism connects the monitored and postselected dynamics to a broader family of stochastic evolution. We apply the formalism to a chain of free fermions subject to partial postselected monitoring of local fermion parities. Within a two-replica approach, we obtain an effective bosonized Hamiltonian in the strong postselected limit. Using a renormalization group analysis, we find that the universality of the non-Hermitian MiPT is stable against a finite (weak) amount of stochasticity. We further show that the passage to the monitored universality occurs abruptly at finite partial postselection, which we confirm from the numerical finite size scaling of the MiPT. Our approach establishes a way to study MiPTs for arbitrary subsets of quantum trajectories and provides a potential route to tackle the experimental postselected problem.

Signatures of the excited-state quantum phase transition in the periodic dynamics of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

Georg Engelhardt, V. M. Bastidas, Tobias Brandes

We investigate signatures of the excited-state quantum phase transition in the periodic dynamics of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. With this aim, we use the semiclassical trajectories to calculate quantum mechanical quantities such as the density of states and expectation values of observables in eigenstates of the system. Motivated by this approach, we suggest an experimental protocol, based on the time evolution of the finite-size system, to find singularities in observables, which arise due to the excited-state quantum phase transition. We also discuss the influence of the participation ratio on the deviations of the quantum mechanical finite-size time evolution from the classical one.

ac-driven quantum phase transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

Georg Engelhardt, V. M. Bastidas, Clive Emary +1 more

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model under monochromatic modulation of the interparticle interaction. We show that the external driving induces a rich phase diagram that characterizes the multistability in the system. Interestingly, the number of stable configurations can be tuned by increasing the amplitude of the driving field. Furthermore, by studying the quantum evolution, we demonstrate that the system exhibits a set of quantum phases that correspond to dynamically stabilized states.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions and periodic dynamics

We investigate signatures of the excited-state quantum phase transition in the periodic dynamics of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and the Tavis-Cummings model. In the thermodynamic limit, expectation values of observables in eigenstates of the system can be calculated using classical trajectories. Motivated by this, we suggest a method based on the time evolution of the finite-size system to find singularities in observables, which arise due to the excited-state quantum phase transition.

Universal long-time behavior of the quantum Fisher information in dynamical quantum phase transitions

J. Mumford, Robert J. Lewis-Swan

We investigate dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in quantum systems that possess well-defined classical limits, focusing on the spinor Bose-Einstein condensate and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. We diagnose the DQPTs with the long-time average of the quantum Fisher information (QFI) showing that it abruptly changes at the transition point. Using mean-field and semiclassical approximations, we demonstrate that the long-time average of the QFI reveals universal behavior that persists across different systems.

Wiseman–Milburn control for the Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick model

Sven Zimmermann, Wassilij Kopylov, Gernot Schaller

Abstract We apply a measurement-based closed-loop control scheme to the dissipative Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick model. Specifically, we use the Wiseman–Milburn feedback master equation to control its quantum phase transition. For the steady state properties of the Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick system under feedback we show that the considered control scheme changes the critical point of the phase transition. We show that entanglement measures such as concurrence allow one to unambiguously locate precursors of quantum-critical behaviour in the finite-size regime, unlike conventionally used operator expectation values. We find that with feedback, the position of the critical point can be shifted to smaller spin–spin interactions, which is potentially useful for setups with limited control on these.
