Abstract

Measurement estimation bounds for local quantum multiparameter estimation, which provide lower bounds on possible measurement uncertainties, have so far been formulated in two ways: by extending the classical Cramér-Rao bound (e.g., the quantum Cramér-Rao bound and the Nagaoka Cramér-Rao bound) and by incorporating the parameter estimation framework with the uncertainty principle, as in the Lu-Wang uncertainty relation. In this work, we present a general framework that allows a direct comparison between these different types of estimation limits. Specifically, we compare the attainability of the Nagaoka Cramér-Rao bound and the Lu-Wang uncertainty relation, using analytical and numerical techniques. We show that these two limits can provide different information about the physically attainable precision. We present an example where both limits provide the same attainable precision and an example where the Lu-Wang uncertainty relation is not attainable even for pure states. We further demonstrate that the unattainability in the latter case arises because the figure of merit underpinning the Lu-Wang uncertainty relation (the difference between the quantum and classical Fisher information matrices) does not necessarily agree with the conventionally used figure of merit (mean-squared error). The results offer insights into the general attainability and applicability of the Lu-Wang uncertainty relation. Furthermore, our proposed framework for comparing bounds of different types may prove useful in other settings. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The Most Informative Cramér--Rao Bound for Quantum Two-Parameter Estimation with Pure State Probes

Simon K. Yung, C. M. Yung, Lorcán O. Conlon +1 more

Optimal measurements for quantum multiparameter estimation are complicated by the uncertainty principle. Generally, there is a trade-off between the precision with which different parameters can be simultaneously estimated. The task of determining the minimum achievable estimation error is a central task of multiparameter quantum metrology. For estimating parameters encoded in pure quantum states, the ultimate limit is known, but is given by the solution of a non-trivial minimisation problem. We present a new expression for the achievable bound for two-parameter estimation with pure states that is considerably simpler. We also determine the optimal measurements, completing the problem of two-parameter estimation with pure state probes. To demonstrate the utility of our result, we determine the precision limit for estimating displacements using grid states.

Uncertainty and trade-offs in quantum multiparameter estimation

Ilya Kull, Philippe Allard Guérin, Frank Verstraete

Abstract Uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics express bounds on our ability to simultaneously obtain knowledge about expectation values of non-commuting observables of a quantum system. They quantify trade-offs in accuracy between complementary pieces of information about the system. In quantum multiparameter estimation, such trade-offs occur for the precision achievable for different parameters characterizing a density matrix: an uncertainty relation emerges between the achievable variances of the different estimators. This is in contrast to classical multiparameter estimation, where simultaneous optimal precision is attainable in the asymptotic limit. We study trade-off relations that follow from known tight bounds in quantum multiparameter estimation. We compute trade-off curves and surfaces from Cramér–Rao type bounds which provide a compelling graphical representation of the information encoded in such bounds, and argue that bounds on simultaneously achievable precision in quantum multiparameter estimation should be regarded as measurement uncertainty relations. From the state-dependent bounds on the expected cost in parameter estimation, we derive a state-independent uncertainty relation between the parameters of a qubit system.

Cramér-Rao bound and quantum parameter estimation with non-Hermitian systems

Jianning Li, Liu, Haodi, Zhihai Wang +1 more

The quantum Fisher information constrains the achievable precision in parameter estimation via the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, which has attracted much attention in Hermitian systems since the 60s of the last century. However, less attention has been paid to non-Hermitian systems. In this Letter, working with different logarithmic operators, we derive two previously unknown expressions for quantum Fisher information, and two Cramér-Rao bounds lower than the well-known one are found for non-Hermitian systems. These lower bounds are due to the merit of non-Hermitian observable and it can be understood as a result of extended regimes of optimization. Two experimentally feasible examples are presented to illustrate the theory, saturation of these bounds and estimation precisions beyond the Heisenberg limit are predicted and discussed. A setup to measure non-Hermitian observable is also proposed.

Multiparameter quantum estimation with a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector

Shoukang Chang, Yashu Yang, Wei Ye +6 more

The uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector serves as a fundamental model in relativistic quantum metrology. While previous studies have mainly concentrated on single-parameter estimation via quantum Cramér-Rao bound, the multi-parameter case remains significantly underexplored. In this paper, we investigate the multiparameter estimation for a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to a vacuum scalar field in both bounded and unbounded Minkowski vacuum. Our analysis reveals that quantum Cramér-Rao bound fails to provide a tight error bound for the two-parameter estimation involving the initial phase and weight parameters. For this reason, we numerically compute two tighter error bounds, Holevo Cramér-Rao bound and Nagaoka bound, based on a semidefinite program. Notably, our results demonstrate that Nagaoka bound yields the tightest error bound among all the considered error bounds, consistent with the general hierarchy of multiparameter quantum estimation. In the case with a boundary, we observe the introduction of boundary systematically reduces the values of both Holevo Cramér-Rao bound and Nagaoka bound, indicating an improvement on the attainable estimation precision. These results offer valuable insights on and practical guidance for advancing multiparameter estimation in relativistic context.

Quantum metrology of mixed states via purification

Sisi Zhou

Multiparameter quantum metrology is ubiquitous in physics, yet it remains fundamentally challenging. As reflected by the uncertainty principle, distinct unknown parameters generally cannot be estimated simultaneously at their individual ultimate precision limits. The quantum Cramér--Rao bound (QCRB) and the Holevo Cramér--Rao bound (HCRB) represent the ultimate precision bounds in multiparameter quantum metrology. Here we introduce new formulations of these bounds based on quantum state purification. We show that, for any mixed state, their values are directly related to those of its purification, provided that nuisance parameters are introduced on the environmental system. Leveraging this connection, we develop a remarkably simple method for asymptotically attaining either the HCRB or twice the QCRB for arbitrary mixed states, using random purification channels and individual measurements.

Multiparameter function estimation for general Hamiltonians

Erfan Abbasgholinejad, Sean R. Muleady, Jacob Bringewatt +2 more

Estimation of physical parameters encoded in a Hamiltonian is a central task in quantum sensing and learning. While the ultimate precision limit for estimating a single parameter coupled to a single generator is well established, the corresponding bound for estimating a function of multiple parameters-each coupled to distinct and possibly non-commuting generators-remains unknown in general. Here, we derive the ultimate quantum limit and present an estimation protocol for any function of parameters in a general Hamiltonian that attains this bound. We show that, although the task is fundamentally a multiparameter problem, our tight bound reduces to an optimized single-parameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound, even for arbitrary generator sets. Our result unifies and extends previous works, providing a general framework for optimal function estimation in quantum systems.
