Exact eigenstates with off-diagonal long-range order for interacting bosonic systems

Abstract

Fermions and hardcore bosons share the same restriction: no more than one particle can occupy a single site in a lattice system. Specifically, in one dimension, two systems can share the same matrix representation. In this paper, we investigate both the fermion and hardcore-boson models with nearest-neighbor (NN) interaction in a ring lattice. We construct the exact eigenstates of the hardcore-boson model with resonant NN interaction and show that they possess off-diagonal long-range order in the thermodynamic limit. In comparison, the fermionic counterpart does not support such a feature due to the different particle statistics, although they share an identical energy spectrum. In addition, we examine the effect of the periodic boundary condition on the dynamics of the condensate states through numerical simulations.

Condensate ground states of hardcore bosons induced by an array of impurities

J. Y. Liu-Sun, E. S. Ma, Z. Song

Neither hardcore bosons nor fermions can occupy the same lattice site-state. However, a nearest neighbour interaction may counteract the hardcore effect, resulting in condensate states in a bosonic system. In this work, we unveil the underlying mechanism by developing a general method to construct the condensate eigenstates from those of sub-Hamiltonians. As an application, we find that a local on-site potential can induce an evanescent condensate mode. Based on this, exact condensate ground states of hardcore bosons, possessing off-diagonal long-range order, can be constructed when an array of impurities is applied. The effect of the off-resonance impurity on the condensate ground states is also investigated using numerical simulations of the dynamic response.

Condensate states in Fermi and Bose-Hubbard ladders

F. X. Liu, E. S. Ma, Z. Song

Although neither hardcore bosons nor fermions can occupy the same single-site state, they still obey different statistics, resulting in distinct many-particle quantum states, such as condensate states versus Fermi-liquid states. However, when only pair states are considered, the two can take the same form, since a local hardcore Bose pair and a Fermi pair obey the same statistics. In this work we demonstrate this by studying both Fermi and Bose extended Hubbard ladders, which can be realized experimentally in synthetic atomic ladders. A set of exact condensate-pair eigenstates for the Fermi ladder is constructed under SU(2) symmetry and can then be obtained by the spectrum generating algebra. The corresponding hardcore boson counterpart can be simply obtained by replacing fermionic operators with hardcore bosonic ones. Nevertheless, the boson-pair eigenstates are associated not with symmetry but with the restricted spectrum generating algebra. We also investigate the effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping on the condensate states through numerical simulations of the dynamic response. The conclusions can be extended to a two-layer system. Our result reveals not only the resemblance of fermions to hardcore bosons, but also a possible mechanism of Hilbert-space fragmentation.

Stripes and holes in a two-dimensional model of spinless fermions or hardcore bosons

N. G. Zhang, Christopher L. Henley

We consider a Hubbard-like model of strongly interacting spinless fermions and hardcore bosons on a square lattice, such that nearest neighbor occupation is forbidden. Stripes (lines of holes across the lattice forming antiphase walls between ordered domains) are a favorable way to dope this system below half filling. The problem of a single stripe can be mapped to fermions in one dimension, which allows understanding of its elementary excitations and calculation of the stripe's effective mass for transverse vibrations. Using Lanczos exact diagonalization, we investigate the excitation gap and dispersion of a hole on a stripe, and the interaction of two holes. We also study the interaction of a few stripes, finding that they repel and the interaction energy decays with stripe separation as if they are hardcore particles moving in one (transverse) direction. To determine the stability of an array of stripes against phase separation into a particle-rich phase and a hole-rich liquid, we evaluate the liquid's equation of state, finding that the stripe-array is not stable for bosons but is possibly stable for fermions.

Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order and Generalized Bose Condensation

Marvin D. Girardeau

It is shown for boson systems with periodic boundary conditions that the existence of generalized Bose condensation, of which the simple type typified by the ideal Bose gas is a special case, is equivalent to the existence of off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) in the single-particle density matrix ρ1 provided that the two noncomuting limits involved in the criterion for ODLRO are taken in the proper order: first size of system → ∞, then interparticle separation → ∞. It is shown by means of an example that certain assumptions concerning the behavior of the single-particle momentum distribution function involved in proving this equivalence are actually satisfied in thermal equilibrium for some dynamical models. The analysis is generalized to box-enclosure boundary conditions by an extension of an argument due to Schafroth, according to which box-enclosure conditions are equivalent to homogeneous Neumann conditions except for a thermodynamically negligible surface effect, provided that one second-quantizes with respect to Hartree-Fock orbitals rather than free-particle orbitals. A general criterion for generalized Bose condensation in terms of eigenvalues of ρ1 is proposed. On the basis of the behavior of soluble models it is conjectured that for a boson system in thermal equilibrium subject to arbitrary boundary conditions, the existence of such Bose condensation is equivalent to the existence of ODLRO in ρ1. The two-particle density matrix ρ2 is discussed briefly. By means of a simplified model it is shown that for a Bose system generalized condensation implies large eigenvalues of ρ2 and ODLRO of ρ2, just as for ρ1. It is pointed out that the question of the existence or nonexistence of generalized Bose condensation of fermion pairs ought to be investigated.

Edge-localized states in quantum one-dimensional lattices

Ricardo A. Pinto, Masudul Haque, Sergej Flach A

In one-dimensional quantum lattice models with open boundaries, we find and study localization at the lattice edge. We show that edge-localized eigenstates can be found in both bosonic and fermionic systems, specifically, in the Bose-Hubbard model with on-site interactions and in the spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor interactions. We characterize the localization through spectral studies via numerical diagonalization and perturbation theory through considerations of the eigenfunctions and through the study of explicit time evolution. We concentrate on few-particle systems, showing how more complicated edge states appear as the number of particles is increased.

Hilbert space fragmentation in hardcore Bose and Fermi Hubbard models on generalized Lieb lattices

D. K. He, Zihao Song

We study the Hilbert space fragmentation (HSF) in hardcore Bose and Fermi Hubbard models in the framework of the restricted spectrum generating algebra (RSGA). We present a family of hardcore Bose-Hubbard models with repulsive density-density interactions on a generalized Lieb lattice. We show that this system possesses the RSGA structure in the large interaction strength limit, exhibiting quantum HSF. It allows us to construct a set of exact condensate eigenstates, possessing off diagonal long-range order. Based on numerical simulations conducted on several representative lattices, we demonstrate the existence of weak fragmentations when the constraints are not exact. As applications, we also studied the connection between HSF and RSGA in modified fermionic Hubbard models, where the η-pairing states are shown to be energy towers, acting as quantum scars.
